My advice to my 30 y/o self is to not disappoint my 25 y/o self, who is already disappointed in his 20 y/o self.

yeah, "you're going to survive to your 43rd birthday at least" would be more accurate. I'm not going to survive indefinitely . . .

Fas was an Irish welfare education program that has been replaced over the last year.

Fas courses are kinda rubbish tho, Stevolende. I've done two and I've found them worthless although I suppose they kept me occupied at the time.

Can't think of any advice that would have changed my decisions. To my ~25-year-old self I would have said that drinking is not the path to social acceptance that you seem to think it is.

-You are more financially flush than you realise, if only you'd run a better budget. Start saving for a deposit. If you think you cant afford a flat now you should see how it gets in 10 years.

- DONT start smoking. You think its an occasional enjoyment you're not hooked on right now. It will sneak up on you. And cig prices are about to double.

- dont let your friend L move in as a flatmate. It did nothing but destroy a good friendship.

I hope not

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 23:55 (eight years ago) link

I would hope not, too. I know she's been close to the end of her patience in living with her depression at times in the past. it sounds like she's in a bad way atm.

Aimless, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 23:57 (eight years ago) link

it does , and i dont think you being so blunt there will help matters

clearly you meant no harm but it came across insensitive dude

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:00 (eight years ago) link

it came across insensitive dude

she just posted three times in a few minutes that the best advice she could give herself at any age would be to kill herself.

my asking her can't be worse than her thinking it, imo. it's pretty hard to talk about it with anyone, if you won't say what you're thinking.

but, maybe you have more training and experience with this than I do. I will defer to your judgment, if that is true.

Aimless, Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:04 (eight years ago) link

I do not.

Find a community centre and take a few courses. Dressmaking would have been good though I wouldn't have had the set up to really capitalise on it.
Find a decent place to live. & don't settle for bad housing. Place Iwound up in at the tiime wasa jerry built conversion weith no sound proofing.

Develop some skills.

Woun dup moving across the country and then going to University a couple of years later.

Funny that the original post and the most recent thread bump mention computer programming. I turned 31 this past May and the best advice I have for my 1-year-younger self is to take coding courses so that you'll have employable skills in 2019.

Have a good time, all the time

that's my philosophy calstars

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 September 2019 05:27 (four years ago) link

I don't think it's possible to have a good time, all the time.

My advice to myself would be:

Have the nerve to keep going and play your role, despite the imposter syndrome, the paralysis of fear and uncertainty, and the inevitable fuck ups. Life is surprising - some of the things you think you'll enjoy, you end up hating, and some disasters turn out to be positive overall. Experience it in all its variety - and don't get too obsessed on any one event and try not to end up embittered.

This. My company just laid off a 10 year employee the week after her anniversary. I am nearing my 15th, and my salary dwarfs the rest of the dept as i am the most senior member. I know i am next.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 29 September 2019 21:23 (four years ago) link

Thirty year olds have unlimited access to a massive buffet of all the platitudes they can eat. The problem is knowing which ones will best apply to their own situation, in order to avoid the stress, pain and heartaches that are headed their way.
