linda cardellini (zachlyon), Friday, 26 September 2014 01:38 (nine years ago) link

Disastrous? Not seeing Clutch Over Replacement in their calculations. Sounds like these egghead schlubs can't even get a job at NASA firing rockets at North Korea, as weak as their math is. #FarewellCaptain

jeter was my childhood hero. not just my favorite athlete, but literally my hero: i owned several of his jerseys, read all his biographies, watched the yankees religiously, went to games as often as possible, etc. my computer passwords are still jeter-related.

life has gotten in the way of baseball fandom over the past several years, but a couple of months ago i told my mom i wanted to go to tonight's yankee game. after checking schedules with the rest of my family, she gets tickets for a DIFFERENT game. no big deal, i'm sure the mlb.com stream was just as great as being there in person

k3vin k., Friday, 26 September 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

(Of course that was incredible but) How many times will we see that replayed during the playoffs? 100?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 September 2014 04:43 (nine years ago) link

btw the NPR hourly news segment on this concluded "Jeter could play in the Bronx again if the team makes the playoffs." Your donations, well spent on research.

@BenLindbergh
Torre, Bernie, Rivera, Posada, Pettitte looking on and smiling like Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda at the end of Return of the Jedi.

it is so perfectly horrible, it is derek jeter

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:06 (nine years ago) link

"Broken bat, I got a run in, you know what I mean?" Jeter said. "But I've done that time and time again."

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:07 (nine years ago) link

otoh, the Yankee fans can home and put their Giants shit on now

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

If the Orioles win the WS it will be because Jeter blessed them as a postseason proxy for Yankees fans to root for.

iggwilv azaelea (sanskrit), Friday, 26 September 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

@darrenrovell
Derek Jeter wore two uniforms last night. One Jeter will keep. The other will presumably be sold.

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2014 15:27 (nine years ago) link

W***e of the Yankees

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/11598946/joe-girardi-criticized-new-york-yankees-pregame-tirade-derek-jeter-yankee-stadium-finale

BOSTON -- It was supposed to be a festive occasion, in which Derek Jeter's New York Yankees teammates were to present their captain with gifts to express their respect and gratitude just moments before he would take the field for his final game at Yankee Stadium.

But before the gifts could be bestowed, manager Joe Girardi had a message he wished to deliver to his players.

It was not a fond farewell to Jeter, but a scathing critique of the Yankees' 2014 season, in which he expressed his disappointment with their failure to reach the playoffs for a second straight year, the first time that has happened in more than two decades.

According to clubhouse sources who were present for the critique, and backed up by interviews with more than a half-dozen players, most of whom spoke to ESPNNewYork.com off the record for fear of angering their manager, Girardi chided some players for being overweight and others for not being "hungry" enough.

mixed messages, joe

well thank God this wasn't over anything stupid

Yankees prospect right-hander Ty Hensley was brutally attacked over the holidays and suffered “multiple facial fractures, including to his jaw, as well as multiple other head injuries.” Charges have been filed against 24-year-old Anthony Morales, who played football at Weber State and tried out for the Carolina Panthers last year....

Witnesses told police they heard Hensley and Morales arguing about the amount of money athletes receive for signing with professional teams, the court papers said.

one month passes...

Yankees will retire the uniform numbers of Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte.

A regular player will be wearing an aleph on his back sometime in the next five years.
