Just tried to make use of my invite; site seems to be down.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 28 September 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

I'll use this after it gets acquired by Groupon or whatever

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Sunday, 28 September 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

I only joined FB about 3 years after it took off, and reluctantly (and then didnt use it for 12 months). I jumped on G+ and Dreamwdith right away so I could nab usernames, and theres a temptation do to that here too but I have not once posted on my G+ or Dreamwidth account so screw that (I do use G+'s hangouts chat app tho)

Still hardly ever use twitter either, and a large chunk of my friends only post/chat there, and I am genuinely missing things theyre up to. Which faintly annoys. but eh, they use the same argt about FB.

dreamwidth

schlump, Sunday, 28 September 2014 23:35 (nine years ago) link

hadn't heard of dreamwidth until now, kinda love the name

The Complainte of Ray Tabano, Sunday, 28 September 2014 23:38 (nine years ago) link

it was a LiveJournal replacement. No one uses it.

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Monday, 29 September 2014 01:11 (nine years ago) link

(amazingly, some hardcore holdout friends of mine still use both Livejournal, AND Usenet ffs)

I've got like 5 g+ accounts that I never use.

i swear to god i got a Yahoo! Groups invitation in my e-mail today.

scott seward, Monday, 29 September 2014 01:37 (nine years ago) link

Wow Yahoo Groups still exist!?

I was even suprised the other day to find Myspace seems to still be going (and is used by some bands and whatnot even tho, why would you when theres Bandcamp and Soundcloud?)

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Monday, 29 September 2014 01:43 (nine years ago) link

i still have an earthlink e-mail address, maybe that's why i got it...

scott seward, Monday, 29 September 2014 02:08 (nine years ago) link

Probably for the same reason you'd use a Hotmail acct xp

, Monday, 29 September 2014 02:14 (nine years ago) link

bc it's the account i used to sign up for ilx?

Mordy, Monday, 29 September 2014 02:17 (nine years ago) link

things like this always make me think about how I'm pretty calcified in my internet habits, or it feels that way - like, new platform? lol whatever, feel like I've got what I need here chum, you kids have fun with it tho

The Complainte of Ray Tabano, Monday, 29 September 2014 02:52 (nine years ago) link

I go where the (bulk of the) action is, generally speaking. Thus in my internet life its gone Usenet --> LiverJournal --> ILX/FB (with a tiiiiny smidge of twitter). But all along its been about a combo of blogging and discussion for me (as opposed to posting links/social justice/soundbites). I cant for the life of me work out what ello would offer.

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Monday, 29 September 2014 03:32 (nine years ago) link

Liverjournal? lol, nice freudian slip. Also, I forgot about IRC.

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Monday, 29 September 2014 03:33 (nine years ago) link

Actually yeah Livejournal is what Ello reminds of in its scope (no celebs, not your grandparents). Except LJ without decent privacy options, which appears to be largely missing the point.

It's interesting to see people complain about what they now consider standard social media features, as if the idea is to be another Facebook.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 29 September 2014 21:20 (nine years ago) link

It would be funny if there was a huge migration back to Livejournal. I know that's not how the internet works, but I'd do it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 29 September 2014 22:30 (nine years ago) link

Has LJ already revamped/rebranded itself like MySpace did?

, Monday, 29 September 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

LJ has made some cosmetic changes in the past few years but it doesn't really need to be remade or rebranded b/c it remains very popular in russia

1staethyr, Monday, 29 September 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

yeah I'd go back to LJ if everyone else did(it had the friend-feed wall concept waayyyy before FB did for starters) but given its now Russian run who knows how safe it is any more. i peep it v occasionally but haven't posted in some years.

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link

friend of mine went on a tear on twitter lately telling the sad story of LJ's core communities and its depopulation to another friend

Got my invite (I've decided to join, if only to 'park' my name but will see how it goes) but on trying to join, it redlights my password choice no matter what I put in there and won't let me proceed to 'create account'. Whywhywhywhy?

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 13:29 (nine years ago) link

i've only been able to do it by dragging an image from my desktop into their weird update box.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 13:33 (nine years ago) link

If you click in the posting box (marked 'Say Ello'), an 'Upload' icon appears underneath the box. You can use that to browse and select images from hard drive etc. As previously mentioned, you can't embed images from other sites.

That might be because it does not like your choice of user name, particularly if someone else has it.

Mark G, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:41 (nine years ago) link

Still waiting on my invite, but looking at the sample profiles I actually don't like the design so far, it feels very forced minimalist in a way that doesn't actually make it more readable.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:43 (nine years ago) link

Also it seems to lose some of the functionality of fb that is actually good (maybe they will add later?) such as embedding video content.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

I guess that's a matter of taste, although I think it's hard to argue that it's not much more readable than, say, Facebook. I like the look of it personally, as in I find it attractive (and I've always disliked the basic look of Facebook, let alone with the addition of ads and multiple sidebars etc.). That doesn't mean I'm going to use it though.

dubmill, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link

I like that it has less clutter, but at the same time I find the spacing awkward and I don't like the typeface, and there's too little use of design elements that might help separate one thing from another. It's very tumblresque, which I guess a lot of people like.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

Is the main font Courier? I've always liked that style of typeface. It's personal taste, I suppose. I also like that it's just black and white (and a bit of grey).

dubmill, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

I don't like the typeface, it looks like a high school poetry zine

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

can't wait for november 2014 when nobody gives a shit about this anymore

That may be why I like it (or some similar association).

Yes, I see a lot of people joining up but apparently not in a hurry to post anything much.

dubmill, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

I think I generally don't like this trend of "hip-looking shit just appearing before your eyes unexplained" in web design, app design, etc.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

can't wait for no one to care about this either so i can be myself, maven huffman, in peace.
