Also, the weird lyric lift from Radiohead in "Cherry" is unexpected and maybe a little awkward.

glenn can you tell me if the canadian catalog is drastically different from the american like netflix?

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 2 October 2014 23:33 (nine years ago) link

No, the two are not drastically different. I just took a cursory look at some of the relatively few things that are technically available in one of the two countries but not the other, and all of the ones I checked were cases where a release is only available in one, but the same audio is available on another release in the other country. I'm sure there are actual differences, too, but I couldn't quickly find any.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 3 October 2014 01:44 (nine years ago) link

thanks! i was using the US version via vpn (*slaps self on wrist*) but i really wanted to pay and couldn't—but was a bit worried about switching over.

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 3 October 2014 12:42 (nine years ago) link

I know this isn't the thread, but I have a tech Spotify question -- is there a way to easily/quickly see the full title of a track? Often classical music track titles are very, very long because they list composer, piece, orchestra, conductor, and only then the movement or sub-section and I can't actually see the last part.

what is the calvin and the hobgoblins like?

Mordy, Monday, 6 October 2014 00:09 (nine years ago) link

Okay! A little weak on the production end but a single playthru is interesting.

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Monday, 6 October 2014 00:33 (nine years ago) link

The Calvin & the Hobgoblins EP sounds clearly like it was self-produced by somebody without a professional production background, but to me that's a significant part of its charm. Wild ambition mashed through the available filters and tools.

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 6 October 2014 15:25 (nine years ago) link

Any reason to listen to Yelle in 2014?

the Kazakh noun/adjective distinction (seandalai), Monday, 6 October 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

"Completement fou" (the title track) has been in my head for the last two days, so ... maybe?

Sure, there are always reasons. I didn't even know what you were talking about, and it took me about 15 seconds to discover that I liked this: http://open.spotify.com/track/48qPo25VFExoldlr26LcxF

Oh, and Godflesh. And a new single by The Who.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 13 October 2014 05:38 (nine years ago) link

Some things I flagged this week:

- The full Kira Isabella (of "Quarterback" notoriety) album.
- A beepycrunchy bleakrobot new album by Neosignal.
- A subdued/sublime new Kleerup EP with appearances by Susanne Sundfor, Jenny Wilson, Niki & the Dove and Maja Ivarsson.
- The two pre-Climax EPs by Beastmilk.
- A cathartic new album by German metal band Bethlehem (with a uselessly long album-title, but one of the songs is called "Nazi Zombies mit Tourette-Syndrom"), plus their 20-year-old debut album Dark Metal.
- A new broken-power-adapter-and-caterwauling album by Pharmakon (not to be confused with Phantogram).
- A new French pop-punk band called The Garlics.
- A 4-part, 5-hour thing by The A.M. Experiment called Canonization of Talk Talk that appears to consist of 10:00-15:00 process-blurrings of each song from four Talk Talk/Mark Hollis records.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 00:47 (nine years ago) link

i'll add

Melvins · Hold It In

Kasba · Rwina

glenn: t/f you listened to judy garland sing over the rainbow at least 4 times tnite

Mordy, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 03:11 (nine years ago) link

Hah! I was trying to play it just once for my daughter as her going-to-bed song, but I kept finding versions that were mastered so quietly that we could barely hear them. After a while I finally realized that I was accidentally playing the music out of a laptop near the speakers I thought I was playing it through, and it wasn't a mastering problem at all.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 14:41 (nine years ago) link

There are a few Mahmoud Ahmed albums that just got added. Stoked!
