C/D MINDY KALING (THE DEFINITIVE POLL)

This show is getting so great. Adam Pally was a great addition and I'm glad that, so far at least, the Mindy/Danny relationship is actually making it more interesting.

yeah i was totally resigned to the show never melding the romantic and ensemble aspects, but making danny & mindy a couple has kinda done the trick - we no longer have to spend half the episode with a dude outside the ensemble. and while pally just seemed like one more clown they've made him distinct over time.

do kinda regret he can't be the male lead on marry me, though

someone complained on twitter that Pally was going to waste on The Mindy Project and i was like no way, he's already had more screentime than at least 5 other characters that are or were full cast members

i could 4-5 legit laughs from this show every episode almost exclusively from mindy. the rest of the cast is good too but she is next-level imo.

yeah the comedic voice of her/her character has been really strong and fully formed from the jump, even as they've played mix-and-match with the ensemble

Pally is great, but it feels he's kinda made the British doctor redundant, that guy had hardly anything to do last season. Also, I don't like the way they've gradually reduced the female supporting cast; looks like Betsy has inepxlicably disappearead between seasons 2 and 3, just like Gwen and the two other female friends of Mindy inexplicably disappeared after sesons 1. It feels kinda weird, Mindy is depicted as a feminine women, but now she appears to have no other friends than the masculine guys from her work.

I do hope they'll bring back Rhea Perlman for more episodes... She was a perfect choice for Danny's mom, and not just because it explains his height.

i understand mourning the women that got lost in the shuffle of mindy's supporting cast (i liked betsy a lot), but i think you're making a big ol unadvisable assumption in saying a (*gingerly picks up the landmine of a phrase you gave us, thanks so much*) "feminine woman" would naturally have close female friends, and be uncomfortable in a primarily male friend circle

i mean mindy is portrayed as extremely selfish and competitive as hell, practically a cross between liz lemon and angelina jolie

I didn't say she'd be uncomfortable with guys, just that it feels weird a woman like her wouldn't have *any* female friends. Though I guess you could fanwank it away by saying that her female friends from season 1 are still there, the series just doesn't anymore show what she does with them. That doesn't explain what happened to Betsy though...

i just think you should realize that with the "feminine" and "like her" addendums to "woman" you're suggesting a) that there is a type of woman you could imagining having no female friends and b) that you'd consider that person more "masculine" than mindy. again, unadvised.

without engaging in "fanwank," she is pretty centered on work and her relationship right now, so subplots about girlfriends outside the already chock-full-of-clowns office would be a little gratuitous.

let's not forget most of her subplots about her friend in season 1 involved them being mad at her and her resenting their evolving lives

Mindy Kaling is obviously great, but I've started to appreciate Chris Messina's comic chops more and more as the show goes on. His "victory dance" in "Caramel Princess Time", when he managed to make it in time to work despite Mindy's sabotage, was just hysterical. Also, while the whole "guy hiding his weaknesses and insecurities behind a rough, masculine façade" may be bit of a cliche, I think with Danny they've handled it really well, both acting- and writing-wise.

And I was glad to see Rhea Perlman appear again, which I take it means she'll become a recurring character? But speaking of guest stars, am I the only one who thought the new romantic writer character looked kinda like ILX's very own Mandee? Something about her eyes, her face, her hair, was eerily similar.

so has Tamara actually turned into a pretty good character now?

I keep waiting for her teeth to fall out for some reason.

Btw there must be a scene in which the carousel in Golden Gate Park is going to be used, I ran by there one morning around 7:30 and they were filming in the kid's park.

I'm glad if they're fleshing out Tamara, feels like she has potential to become a cool character if don't they use her only as part of Morgan/Tamara hijinks. (I hope that's the reason they broke up the two, not just so they could build up to some corny triangle drama.)

I like how that series actually has a lot female characters look a bit different from the sort women you usually see in mainstream TV, and they're still depicted as attractive, not just as vehicles for comedy of something. Like Jessica, the new doctor character, or the erotic fiction writer Peter dated a few episodes ago.

Also, looks like they're gonna address Mindy's position as a 2nd gen Indian American for the first time? I think it's kinda cool that they have haven't made her heritage a thing at all, but OTOH it seems like her conflict with the immigrant Indian doctor might provide some good story opportunities, and a way for the show to tackle some of the stuff the critics have said it to refuses to tackle.

First of all, Chokalingam fails to emphasize that he was rejected from or waitlisted to most of the medical schools he applied to: Columbia University, Cornell University, George Washington University, Mount Sinai, University of Nebraska, Nobay, University of Pittsburgh, University of Rochester, University of Pennsylvania, Washington University, University of Wisconsin, Yale University, and Case Western.

should be noted that the author of that blog post doesn't seem to know much about the med school application process. even 15-20 years ago a 3.1/31 applicant is only marginally competitive for most of those schools, so getting rejected from them doesn't say much, even considering the race thing.

i don't doubt the veracity of this thing, really. identifying as black helped this guy a lot, but so what? medical schools by and large have a mission to produce a physician workforce that reflects the patients they serve. it's not exactly a secret. i can't imagine this story changing many minds on race-conscious admission policies

I didn't watch it very regularly last season, but still, that's too bad.

I'm watching it on Hulu now and they just played an ad for the Church of Scientology.

They also keep playing the commercial with those two ladies who have an online business educating kids about bugs. They're holding centipedes and stuff it's too much
