there was a third xtc that used to share a spotify page with the above and new-wave xtc, but they seem to have disappeared.

There are at least 17 artists that have used the name Ghost:1. A Swedish heavy metal band2. A Japanese experimental rock band3. A British trip-hop producer4. A British dubstep collaboration5. A Jamaican reggae musician6. A Japanese visual kei band7. A Polish death metal band8. A British electronic producer9. An American rock band10. A Swedish rock band11. An American rock band, now called Ghost Ghost12. A French death metal band13. A British dubstep DJ14. A Canadian rapper15. An American rapper16. A British progressive rock band17. A French nhw project18. An ambient project (see gh((o))st)
People seem to be into both 1 and 2 simultaneously, though I only really go for 2. I bet at least one of the others is good, though.

Air (the Pete Namlook project) and Air (the French duo) are both good, they're even in the same general genre (electronic listening music). There's also a free jazz band called Air, but I haven't heard them.

And of course there's Prodigy (the UK dance act) and Prodigy (the US rapper, also one half of Mobb Deep) that both have made awesome music. You used to be able to tell them apart when the dance act had a "the" in their name, but at some point they dropped it.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 23 October 2014 17:49 (nine years ago) link
so what's the most common band name?

There is a 90s trip hop and a present-day freak folk Brother Sun, Sister Moon. Both are pretty good.
There is also evidently a new Pond, which is a Tame Impala offshoot, not the 90s band on Sub Pop. Seriously, new bands, would it kill you to do a little research before selecting a name?

Seriously, new bands, would it kill you to do a little research before selecting a name?
That was much more difficult to do pre-internet era, and those bands that did search for other bands that already used a name sometimes didn't anticipate their own success and search other countries as well, thus Nirvana, the Charlatans, Suede.

I get the sense that some apathy is setting in about band names being in use or having been used before.I see bands fairly frequently now that pop up using names that already get multiple Google hits for "[name] band".
― JRN, Thursday, 23 October 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link
That's why you get bands called "Does it offend you yeah", because there's already been too many groups called "The Church" or whatever.
― Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2014 21:27 (nine years ago) link
That was much more difficult to do pre-internet era...
Granted, but both of my examples were new bands taking the names of 90s bands. I agree with JRN, I'm getting the sense of "well, if you're not using the name anymore, I will."

My friend recently booked tickets without thinking to go see Shining at a gig in Glasgow, under the impression it was the Norwegian avant-garde band (Blackjazz, One One One, etc.). Turns out he booked tickets for the similarly popular Swedish black metal Shining. Very disappointing.
