I'm pretty partial to The Electric Spanking of War Babies. I wish the Sly collab were better known.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 16:50 (nine years ago) link

I wish they had been able to do the double-album Clinton had intended (I assume the other stuff from those sessions has seen release over the years?) That is a funny record.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

I'm leaving Zapp off because they were never really part of the P-Funk family... not that that makes it much easier!

Clinton and Bootsy are all over that first record

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 17:23 (nine years ago) link

"George Clinton just happened to step into the studio this night and he really liked this one part that we had already re-did on 'Funky Bounce'. He advised us to loop that section and put the other talk-box parts over it. At that time, this was considered a genius act, because you had to actually cut the tape and make the right cut, line it up and loop it. So let us not forget that Dr. Funkenstein was way ahead of his time as well."
—Bootsy Collins

Roger's also on Electric Spanking of War Babies

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, well, still very much a separate entity, Roger not one to take instruction I think.

Let's Take It To The Stage is a real good record.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link

moving on to neglected deep cuts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFVfRCkq2PU

song starts out as kinda dreamy but not particularly remarkable disco and then gradually morphs into something almost completely different/goes *insanely* hard on the break at 4:58

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

Been raving about that track for years, to anyone who would listen (i.e. hardly anyone), miles better than "Knee Deep" imo.

... and a Martin Parr photo essay (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

weeeellll I dunno if I'd go THAT far

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

Oh fucking hell, I thought that putting together a ballot for the XTC poll was difficult... this just takes the cake! I will be participating, of course!

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

another much loved (around here afaict) deep cut:

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

Cosmic Slop is great, listened to it yesterday. The title track should be in everybody's top 10.

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

NYRB pointed out in their review of the recent Clinton autobio that that song doesn't go where you would expect lyrically, it doesn't go for the easy moral of a hardworking mother it goes to this darker/stranger place with the "and the devil said..." bit

^ Fucking love this one.

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

Prefer Biological Speculation myself, jam of the record imo

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

well that and Loose Booty

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

will definitely vote for "If you Don't Like The Effect, Don't Produce The Cause"

sleeve, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, 'Loose Booty' is definitely a contender for my ballot. The P-Funk album I've been listening to the most recently is probably Motor Booty Affair, so much great stuff on that record: 'Rumpofsteelskin', 'Aqua Boogie', 'Liquid Sunshine', the title track (excellent bassline) amongst others!

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

the bassline in Liquid Sunshine is nuts

will be interesting if any ballads make it anywhere in the results - Wizard of Finance probably the only serious contender I would guess

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

btw if anyone wants to volunteer to help with/host images for the results that'd be great, I don't have anywhere to host stuff myself. Hideous Lump did a bang up job on the XTC poll, feel like P-Funk at least deserves as much

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link

Hmm, ballads-wise, yeah 'Wizard of Finance' definitely a contender for me. Probably 'Everybody's Going To Make It This Time' and 'Baby I Owe You Something Good' too. Good to see Cosmic Slop getting some love, I've always been particularly fond of 'March To The Witch's Castle' from that one.

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:30 (nine years ago) link

Thanks to "Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch in Him," Funkadelic answered my question: what act did I want writing songs about gays from an unexpected/ironic pov?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:32 (nine years ago) link

Honestly, even though there's so much stuff to take into account here, I'm genuinely quite excited to be listening to all these records again for the purposes of this poll. What an incredible run of music here!

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:41 (nine years ago) link

I'm going to try and resist the temptation for vote for every track on Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On, but it's going to be difficult not to!

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:44 (nine years ago) link

You have 100 spots, fit them all in, I know I will

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:47 (nine years ago) link

Ranking the songs off the record is the hard part for me

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, shouldn't be hard for me to do a 100 track ballot for this, so much stuff is springing to mind already without even trying to get a ballot together, but as you said, ranking them is going to be a difficult task.

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:54 (nine years ago) link

I guess Shakey already mentioned this in passing, but this is great timing for the P-Funk poll as George Clinton just dropped his autobiography (written with Ben Greenman, who also did the terrific Questlove memoir). I have been waiting half my life for it. It's well worth the read.

Here's a link to that NYRB piece: http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2014/oct/22/lessons-of-dr-funk/

Also, P-Funk is such an album band that it'd be a shame if we didn't poll the LPs. I'd be happy to run an albums poll once the tracks poll results roll out.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

Is the Quazar record eligible for the poll? I mean, it has both Glenn Goins (of course) and Jerome Brailey on it, but I understand that Brailey isn't drumming on the whole record?

Welcome To (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

yeah I think that qualifies

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 22:26 (nine years ago) link

will be interesting if any ballads make it anywhere in the results

I like what Bootsy did with ballads on his albums... if they count as ballads, they're slow anyway. Cursory runthrough of my favourites suggests Parliafunkadelicment predominating, some Bootsy and, even though I like a helluva a lot of stuff by the other acts, not much else... I mean, can I actually shoehorn something from Eddie Hazel's album into my list... bah! Too difficult!!!

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 31 October 2014 17:32 (nine years ago) link

Been listening to a lot of these records and holy shit, they really knew how to write a lot of different types of songs. I don't think P-Funk gets enough credit for how diverse the sounds on some of these records are.

Love this one

voodoo chili, Friday, 31 October 2014 17:44 (nine years ago) link

last verse always gets a lol from me:

Well, suddenly as she laid there, mouth wide open, wig half off, snoring,
Breath smelling like a 1948 Buick
I was sick with the guilties, and she smiled in her sleep
As if to say, "All looks are not alike, all holes are not a crack."

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 October 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

there's always at least one cut per Funkadelic record that bears little to no relation to the other songs on the album, and I always loved this one:

can't find my VU/solo poll results but that was also around 40 ballots iirc

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 November 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

Pretty sure I participated in a poll which didn't make double figures ... Abba maybe?

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

feel like we should at least have more poll participants than band members lol

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 November 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

So you're looking at three figures then?

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 24 November 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

Stevie Wonder had roughly 20 or 30 I think.

Eric H., Monday, 24 November 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

XTC poll had almost 40

Oh ILXpaws

Yes sorry I sent it...from Lee

Already said on the Funkadelic album thread, but the new Funkadelic album is out on itunes now. Three goddamn CDs, 3 1/2 hours. Features twice as much new Sly Stone material as Sly's own botched comeback album from a couple years ago. Just purchased it - verdict still pending.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 08:30 (nine years ago) link

curious to hear what you think of it

I guess the only remaining holdout is Grisso...? once his ballot is in I'll get the results goin

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

I've got a bunch of work today, but I have done most of my listening already, so I should have a ballot ready tonight or in the morning at the latest.

Great, we've been standing on the verge of getting this poll on for long enough!

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 18:37 (nine years ago) link

Hey I sent a ballot but didn't get an email back- not sure if I followed procedure correctly.

doesn't look like I got it - can you send it again?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

OK,I resent to the address posted upthread.

SENT!

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 07:28 (nine years ago) link

Not participating (as usual) but this will be my favourite rollout since the classic rock poll. And can I just use this space to tell the dream I had last night, in which Sly Stone and Bootsy Collins were at my parents' old house, attending my dad's Grey Cup (the Super Bowl of Canadian football) party? Nobody but me knew who they were, dunno who invited them, they just sat beside each other at a far end of the couch. Sly was looking pretty thin and greybearded. I went to my old bedroom to find some albums for them to autograph, and got irritated that my Sly and Funkadelic albums were all messed up, with Tower of Power and Frank Zappa and Ted Nugent vinyl in the sleeves instead. Eventually I realized that I could sort the vinyl out later, but by the time I carried the sleeves downstairs, the game was over and everyone was leaving. Sly and Bootsy had already left. (I hate football anyways.)

ok results today...

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:24 (nine years ago) link

there was a funkadelic poll?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

Where there confirmation emails?

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 1 December 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

jesus christ

if anyone still wants to vote get your ballot in now goddammit

19 ballots so far

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

mine was in at the beginning

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

only 19 is a poor show for ilm

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

like wtf people

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

i blame shakey for not using Shit Godamn Get Off Your Ass and vote as a title

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

LOL, I didn't think 19 was too bad but apparently it is :(

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 1 December 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

ilm only likes old music made by white people

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:01 (nine years ago) link

I think the turnout is embarrassing

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:05 (nine years ago) link

the greatest band ever and only 19 ballots is a disgrace. fuck you ilm.
shakey you done good when you starting the roll out so we can see the excuses?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:06 (nine years ago) link

People seem to have been daunted by the size of the discography, like you have to have heard everything or something.

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 1 December 2014 17:08 (nine years ago) link

that's silly. You vote for what you have heard and liked. Nobody has heard every classic rock song ever but people still voted.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

plus it's all on spotify if you want to hear it

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Well I'm not on Spotify (though I have heard most of it anyway... and I voted... so I'll shut up).

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 1 December 2014 17:12 (nine years ago) link

I filled out an entire 100 vote ballot!

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

Hoping that others would too so we got a top 100 roll out
