Funny, I was just thinking about starting a thread about reissues where the reissuing label fucks up the original cover with some kind of reissue frame/logo dealy, but didn't think it was worth its own thread.
For example, I was always a little annoyed by those Columbia/CBS Jazz Masterpieces CD covers:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_O0wk-qJQm6U/S_rbhbSA5-I/AAAAAAAABYo/saakKKk75Ho/s320/miles+davis.jpghttp://d2heru13qkbk4q.cloudfront.net/media/869931/scaled/ma_front.jpghttp://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/ed6f50d5aeb0d58d89cc9c26575202f8/2412380.jpghttp://jazzbluesclub.com/uploads/posts/thumbs/1182585926_cover__gerry_mulligan_what.jpg
Could be worse, but needlessly gunks up the design. Especially that generic clip-art looking JAZZ INSTRUMENTS logo that looks like it should be on the door of a tourist trap designed to be overflow from Preservation Hall

Yeah, I've always disliked the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces framing too, and sometimes they also managed to screw the colours of the original cover:

I first encountered a lot of Miles albums in their CBS Jazz Masterpieces iterations, so I have a weird nostalgic fondness for those covers even though they're objectively shitty.

But then agaim, they are basically reiterating: This is not the album, this is a CD copy of the album.

Album cover
Miles reportedly was unhappy about the album's original cover, which featured a photograph of a young white woman and child aboard a sailboat. He made his displeasure known to Columbia executive George Avakian, asking, "Why'd you put that white bitch on there?"[10] Avakian later stated that the question was made in jest. For later releases of the record, however, the original cover-photo has been substituted by a photograph of Miles Davis.
I hope they at least kept the white kid and the sailboat lol

By the time the album was reissued, the 'option' had lased and Brigit Riley was now an expensive artist and they couldn't afford it anymore.

Yeah I mean, those B&F covers are pretty great! They looked good at the time and still hold up pretty well, but in the long run they're going to end up looking really dated to a particular place and time that has nothing to do with the actual music. They probably helped sell a lot of CDs though.
I'm not sure if the red and green pick a dub cover is original. The little inset version on the b&f cover is the black and white version, so maybe that came first?
