maybe doesn't count as a reissue but the us version of unhalfbricking is kind of meh

also had no idea that the band's moondog matinee cover i've known all these years wasn't the original version

Impulse seriously fucked up the cover art on their first run of CDs (ca. 1987, iirc):

"also had no idea that the band's moondog matinee cover i've known all these years wasn't the original version"

the one you know and love is original. this poster sleeve wrapped around the album. thus, first pressings had two covers.

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link

they were very easy to misplace. which is why you don't see them much. i've had dozens of early pressing copies of that record in my store and only once or twice did i get one with that sleeve.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 19:54 (nine years ago) link

yeah that is a perennial dollar bin record, never saw that poster sleeve

the reissue of endless summer is almost the reverse of this phenomenon

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cd/Fendlessr.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/95/Fennesz_Endless_Summer_Cover_Art.jpg/220px-Fennesz_Endless_Summer_Cover_Art.jpg

the slightly garish cover reflects its origins as a turn of the century glitch album, the touch reissue turns it into something more sombre and dull

i bought this copy of underwater moonlight last year just because i'd never seen it and really liked the cover. 1986 reissue. turns out it sounds amazing! as good as i've ever heard it.

God those early columbia jazz cds are the worst.
Hated those mca cds with the check pattern on the back
Loved the grey minimalist felt 2fers, was really bummed out when i got a different version in the mail (just has the cover of ignite the seven cannons)

Motown was pretty awful with their first CDs :
(it looks like the inner sleeve, but no, that was the cover)

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

They're overselling it. "Hmmm...Marvin Gaye...What's Going On...jeez, I dunno. Wait, hold on, what does this say? 'Music That Makes Memories'! SOLD!"

inferior reissue cover + bonus border!

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

to be fair to Bell Records, they might not have had the art for the original album at that time. i think al green put that album out himself originally? but still, what the hell is that cover? really bad whatever it is.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

the border thing and extra writing can really drive you nuts. it's always ugly. a sticker on the cd will do...

The Robert Wyatt reissue was the same artist both times right? I like both covers.

Somehow I didn't mind as much the Atlantic reissue series with the grey deluxe paper sleeves, because you still had the original cover art on the inner sleeve

I was always kind of fond of this (I think) alternate cover for Money Jungle

xposts: yeah, alfreda benge who also appears on rock bottom and has done most of wyatt's covers. i really like their homespun quality and think it totally suits wyatt's aesthetic.

This one is kind of interesting because the original cover with the girl was restored on the original CD edition back in the 80s, but when the album was remastered the original cover appeared only on the now-OOP deluxe edition while the band photo cover appeared on the more common single-disc edition (which doesn't include the OG art at all in it's package).

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:55 (nine years ago) link

Somebody used the Japan/European sleeve of Agharta as a major influence on their artwork for one panel of an ABC Warriors story in 2000AD I remember noting at the time.

Also I had a really naff glossy sleeve picture on the vinyl copy of The Zombies Odessey & Oracle I picked up in the early/mid 80s. Can't really remember what it looked like beyond it having a blue sleeve and a totally different picture

Stevolende, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:06 (nine years ago) link

When the first CSN was reissued last, for some reason they photoshopped Dallas Taylor off the back cover. I can't find the new one online, but basically they clonestamped the window pattern over where he was behind the door.

Steve Miller Band: Children of The Future, OG Sleeve:

http://thestrangebrew.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Steve-Miller-Band-Children-Of-The-Future.jpg

'70s Reissue:

http://eil.com/images/main/Steve-Miller-Band-Children-Of-The-F-357059.jpg

They did similar thing with Sailor, except going further as to re-title the album "Living In The USA" (after it's hit). I actually have both of those reissues in my vinyl stacks.

They did the same with the other The The reissues as well. Ugh

To be fair, the photos were on a cardboard sleeve, with the original artwork still on the front of the booklet of the CD. Unless that was just for the first run.

Oh man, I hate when record companies do this. This is what Wish You Were Here's cover is supposed to look like:

I prefer the white cover of Islands, which is not the original nor a version I ever owned.

akm, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

We should make lol white people covers for other classic Miles records. Like you could do "Cookin'" with a very pompous, cartoonish french chef on the cover

wk hits the nail.

i love the b&f reissues ..

but hey, just put the proper cover art on them ..

(never seen the original pick a dub original before, ta !)

mark e, Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:26 (nine years ago) link

that pick a dub reissue cover is another example of "more dated than the original" imo

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

I kind of like the Heart of the Congos cover though, honestly never knew it wasn't the original or gave it much thought, and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:30 (nine years ago) link

..and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

which epitomises the whole albums groove perfectly as opposed to a revised 90s art house re-jig.

mark e, Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I mean, those B&F covers are pretty great! They looked good at the time and still hold up pretty well, but in the long run they're going to end up looking really dated to a particular place and time that has nothing to do with the actual music. They probably helped sell a lot of CDs though.

I'm not sure if the red and green pick a dub cover is original. The little inset version on the b&f cover is the black and white version, so maybe that came first?

wk, Thursday, 20 November 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

This isn't godawful and it's technically not even a reissue (it's just the Spanish version of the cover released at the same time as the rest of the world got the zipper cover). But anyone who hasn't seen it before should.

i was pretty excited when rvng announced they would reissue Harald Grosskopf's Synthesist. For some reason they took one of the best covers ever and made it boring.

This got reissued again a couple of months ago with the original artwork. I picked it up straight away.
