I have always preferred the black and white Ziggy one anyway. Did not know about the cartoon cover! Would be cool if the rest of the world had cartoon covers for all of the albums. Would like to see Low.

Yeah the Christine Perfect encapsulates the major label approach to repackaging something- Christine in the Hippy/Huey Newton Poster chair is passe, but if we posterize the photo with blobs of color, we can make it look like a Wharhol commission... very now! And while we're at it, lets rub some Letraset on the thing, but I'm running short on "C" so I'll take some from another sheet. Ready for 1982, to be put on display near to the Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks solo records.

The Hendrix ones are really weird, because it's not like his reputation has slipped, and the Axis and Ladyland covers were iconic.

Those Hendrix reissues were panned at the time. I think they messed with the track sequence too

They didn't mess with the sequence on Axis or Ladyland, but I think AYE might've been futzed with to reflect the UK running order. It also had a slew of bonus tracks.

almost of of the Felt CD reissues had their cover altered in some way

when all their albums were first properly reissued on cd in the 90s lawrence decided they should all have "generic" covers:

What was the actual story re: the puppets on "Band of Gypsies"?

A lot of "oh, John Peel / friends of Brian objected" but nobody seems to know.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 15:11 (nine years ago) link

the original 1986 version of Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death by Felt looked like this. the picture was cropped for the 2003 CD reissue

the image had been cropped much earlier than than on every reissue of the album. only the first vinyl pressing had the original cover. it seems lawrence regretted the photo almost instantly.

The reminds me of a real fucking head-scratcher:

Somehow, the latter issue (1998) looks more embarrassingly dated than the original (1968) issue.

It's so easy to spot late 90s design style.

i was pretty excited when rvng announced they would reissue Harald Grosskopf's Synthesist.
For some reason they took one of the best covers ever and made it boring.

Possibly not "godawful", but..

Yes, he's called David Bowie, but what is he?

Oh, he's a man of words, and a man of music...

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

I always liked the Augustus Pablo cover, the way he's so intently playing the melodica and that woman is like "what is that beguiling instrument?"

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

oh god dude i had to turn the cover inside out i hated it so much. there is this photo of a SUPER stoned pablo sitting at the keyboards or mixing desk or something that is now the cover of that album for me. i'm trying to find it on the web but i can't, maybe i'll scan it

marcos, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

that last one is the same cover that my copy of munich & elsewhere has (but without the added text) so it always looks like a very lazy re-do to me.

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Basically, when the first version was issued, the Brigit Riley sleeve was a cheap option.

By the time the album was reissued, the 'option' had lased and Brigit Riley was now an expensive artist and they couldn't afford it anymore.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 17:05 (nine years ago) link

ah, that would make sense

the one thing in its favour: hell of a lot easier to get the vinyl out compared to the original die cut version.

In the recent Complete Mono Recordings box, the "white woman out sailing" cover art was put back on Miles Ahead.

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

how could they possibly miss the trick of putting Miles' head on an album called Miles Ahead

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

The original Miles Ahead yacht sleeve would have totally worked if you opened out the gatefold and Miles was racing off into the distance on a jet ski

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Which one of those is the godawful one? They all look pretty ugly to me.

Not sure which is earlier, or if it's a different countries thing, but I had the white one and never saw the space one until many years later.

there are a few different shots for Wish You Were Here also, with the burning guy in different positions.

I prefer the white cover of Islands, which is not the original nor a version I ever owned.

akm, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

We should make lol white people covers for other classic Miles records. Like you could do "Cookin'" with a very pompous, cartoonish french chef on the cover

wk hits the nail.

i love the b&f reissues ..

but hey, just put the proper cover art on them ..

(never seen the original pick a dub original before, ta !)

mark e, Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:26 (nine years ago) link

that pick a dub reissue cover is another example of "more dated than the original" imo

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

I kind of like the Heart of the Congos cover though, honestly never knew it wasn't the original or gave it much thought, and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:30 (nine years ago) link

..and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

which epitomises the whole albums groove perfectly as opposed to a revised 90s art house re-jig.

mark e, Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I mean, those B&F covers are pretty great! They looked good at the time and still hold up pretty well, but in the long run they're going to end up looking really dated to a particular place and time that has nothing to do with the actual music. They probably helped sell a lot of CDs though.

I'm not sure if the red and green pick a dub cover is original. The little inset version on the b&f cover is the black and white version, so maybe that came first?

wk, Thursday, 20 November 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

This isn't godawful and it's technically not even a reissue (it's just the Spanish version of the cover released at the same time as the rest of the world got the zipper cover). But anyone who hasn't seen it before should.
