Sam Cooke's year: three of my four favourite songs by him (only "Sad Mood" from 1960 not on the list). I'll vote for "Having a Party." I like the Shirelles' "It's Love That Really Counts" better than "Soldier Boy." Another great '62 song:

OK, after some fairly serious thought...I'm gonna go with "Duke of Earl." Hard not to vote for Sam Cooke. If "Duke" hadn't been there I would have voted "Twisting the Night Away."

Someone told me that, if the speedometer in your car is broken, you'll know you're at 55mph if the dotted highway lines pass at the same tempo as "Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl..." I've never tried it, though.

Skeeter was my #2 pick.
My father had a mad crush on her.

"I Left My Heart in San Francisco"

voting for that for a couple of reasons. first is the Giants are world champions and it is there theme song. the main reason is i did live in San Francisco for seven years and was probably the best time of my life. it is America's most beautiful city, though it can't compare to some city's like Paris, it is unique for a bunch of reason and the air so fresh and clean.

since ILX went down for maintenance on Friday it seems like you can vote for a second time. so for my second choice, which is my actual choice in this poll, is going to be "You've Really Got a Hold on Me."

My mom would have been happy with Green Onions winning, she turned that song up every time it came on. (Would have been 92 this year...Love you mom).

Hey, I think my favorite would have been "Let Me In" by The Sensations (not on the list). "I thought you were my friend.....wee-ooo, wee-ooo, ooo-wee-ooo." The lyrical theme - the party looks & sounds fabulous & why can't I go too? - is the same as Party Lights, so this is quite the pair of 62 hits. Here's something cool I just found out: both Party Lights and Let Me In were written by the very women who sang them: Claudine Clark & Yvonne Mills Baker, respectively. Very unusual for the singer, male or female, to have written the song in early 60s pop.

oh, and "Love Letters" by Ketty Lester, obsession doesn't get more obsessive

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 22:30 (nine years ago) link

Barbara Lynn wrote hers too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoaLCc2jR_g

Zachary Taylor, Thursday, 27 November 2014 06:23 (nine years ago) link

just found out that "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" by Marvin Gaye was a 62 as well. That's what I would pick. Marvin Gaye unbound.

Argh, missed this. Would have voted for 'Telstar'.
