what the hell do they do with these things once they open up like that? how many trucks worth of rock or concrete would it take to fill it? or do they just leave them to fill up with water?

There's a possibility that the photo might be a fake as it's much larger than the initial unconfirmed report given by the mining company. Their shares are tanking anyway, though.

Up until this point I'd been convinced that Russia didn't have any houses at all. I've only ever seen concrete apartment buildings peppered among otherwise barren landscapes.

From http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/article/russian-potash-giant-uralkali-s-shares-drop-after-sinkhole-suspends-production-at-mine-/511417.html
The sinkhole, stretching 20 by 30 meters, was found 3.5 kilometers east of the mine, the regional emergency situations ministry said on Wednesday. It is located on an abandoned mine and does not pose a threat to people who live in Solikamsk town.
Yeah sure...

People were relocated last summer, apparently: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-12/uralkali-s-hometown-could-face-new-sinkhole-risk-by-2015.html

The mine's apparently partly owned by the guy who also owns the Brooklyn Nets.
