Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

first comment is beautiful: links to an old biddle article about pando, as if he's in on the whole thing, doesn't notice that biddle thinks pando and its staff are "toxic"

Let's do this. Let's burn this industry to the ground.
Edit: more background on Carr and journalist on journalist violence.

But nowhere in the Pokémon canon exist the moments of maturity, complexity and artistic achievement that Digimon, at its best, has offered its fans. The investment required to wade through poor releases and boring anime and seek out moments of sublimity is the sort of journey only a true aficionado can appreciate, and it is that ravenous, determined and intellectually curious nature that marks out the Digimon fan. Digimon fans are the Wagnerians of video game and anime culture.

I had some fun questioning some #gg dude on twitter a while ago who was trying to rally people to the cause of some vine comedian or smth who "SJWs" thought should not get a deal with a famous comedian due to rape allegations. It became pretty obvious that there was no real outcry, this guy was a gamergater by way of PUA garbage, and the guy he was defending had copped a plea to felony sexual misconduct.

he was trying to say that there was no point because uh the guy had been "acquitted" of rape. which, when you never go to trial and you plead guilty to felony sexual misconduct, obviously you are a cool dude worth defending.

why has the breitbart brand not stepped forward to offer us the SJW free video games journalism vertical that is our hearts desire

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:11 (nine years ago) link

been wondering that this whole time

goole, Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

Saddam had WMDs in the form of chemical weapons, and the 500 tons of yellowcake uranium shipped to Canada.
The "outed CIA agent" was the best unkept secret in DC, since everyone already knew that she worked for the CIA, and she had a reputation of using her job with the CIA to advance her social status. She wasn't a "covert agent" any more than Stan Smith is a covert CIA agent. She worked in a CIA office in the WMD program.
Comparing GG or UberGate to this is thoroughly disingenuous. Where the problem lies is in the wholly incestuous relationship between SJWs, Journalism Schools, Online "journalism", and "reporters" for these websites. J-Schools have refused to teach objectivity and ethics, and the newly-minted "journalists" are coming out brainwashed by the far-Left leaning J-School professors.

just now reading that reddit about uber and SJW's, so lol

We all know BuzzFeed's radical feminist leanings.

I mean, when I think of places to seek out radical feminist updates, it's hard to name anything more on-point than This Lady’s Impressions Of Celebrities Stuck In Traffic Are Absolutely Perfect and Tacogiving: The Ultimate Thanksgiving Taco Adventure. And that's just in the last hour! My local SJW chapter would be lost without the BuzzFeed ticker we installed that prints this shit out, in color, live as it happens. Once we extract certain "promises" and "commitments" from our lesser sub-SJWits like the New York Times, we believe it will be possible to "kill the Batman." I probably shouldn't be telling you all this though.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:46 (nine years ago) link

do people actually call them "J-schools" or is that just old fashioned dog whistle racism

A friend today told me that her son, a 5th grader who has pretty much unfettered internet access, said to her, "did you know that feminists are doing lots of terrible things to people who play video games?"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 24 November 2014 03:41 (nine years ago) link

i wonder if it is negative that many young people's first exposure to feminism will be through social media rather than wherever it is i first learned about feminism.

wikipedia probably.

Treeship, Monday, 24 November 2014 03:45 (nine years ago) link

so the good folks of gamergate are crowdsourcing a book that will blow the lid off the whole thing i guess? https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pVu8KX8lACSUpKaVo-_JyLDaS3m6GAyUCt_7JqcIhI/mobilebasic?pli=1

naturally it's totally batshit:

I must warn you that what you are about to read will piss you off. This is a story of an underdog fighting an underdog and both sides lose. The villains hide on both sides and the only heroes you will find are those who fight to have their defeat remembered. We have collected witnesses to recall and discuss, but most importantly document this little war that otherwise would be forgotten. We would not be forgotten in the endless sea of ones and zeroes that many other events have been dissolved by, but drowned by liars who could only just grasp the lowest bars of the social ladder.

Let’s take a walk through no man’s land. What you will find here among the ash piles are evidence of lies, deception, ill-gotten gains, facades, and false morality. You will also find the mark of our footprints; the steps we took to pull back the curtain and expose the corruption around us.

Dramatics aside, we have banded many together to write about the corruption of gaming journalism, social justice movements, and social media gurus. While it may seem like a “big internet fight” the repercussions of what has become known as GamerGate are much larger. What on the surface appears as nerds upset about internet politics expands to events of bribery, theft from charity, murder threats, rape, and a whole lot more.

There is nothing we can do about what has already happened. The damage has been done deep. We can educate you though. We can teach you about what has happened and how to make sure it never happens again. Hold on to your seat. The ride never ends.

CH 5: Five guys. Start off with a background to gamergate. Lay the framework to explain everything that is happening. Explain that conflict started when Literally Whos ex-bf Eron went public with all that was going on. In his blog post he mentioned that Zoe (supposedly) slept with five guys for publicity and/or connections. Later on it was proven to be at least 3 guys, and only one actually mattered (no direct proof for other ones), but the important thing is that this blog post was a catalyst for what happened. While an article could be dismissed like other articles like that (I remember there being blog posts on journo insiders in 2012/2013, anyone know what it was?), it generated a wave of publicity when mundanematts video about it was DMCAd by someone claiming to be Literaly Who. People started looking into it and found a lot of shit on this - IA, mundanematt and other outspoken youtubers made videos about it and made this blow up in gaming presss face. This marked the beginning of what was called the cold war.

yeah this is the kind of stuff that will totally convince the outside world of the need for ethics in videogames journalism

I'm reading almost every sentence like it's been uttered in a comic book panel caption featuring a guy in a fedora staring down a rain-slicked street
