i still can't figure out the musical talent hierarchy w/ this group ... it doesn't seem like they've reached the nsync phase where it was like justin -> jc -> who cares
― J0rdan S., Monday, 24 November 2014 20:15 (nine years ago) link
zayn is technically the best singer i think
he is also perfectly carved
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link
anyway my favorite is louis inexplicably
by songwriting credit on this album we get
louis 8liam 7harry 4niall 2zayn 2
but no one's really itching to hear a louis tomlinson album i assume (ok except brad)? is zayn just getting a solo record cuz he's the prettiest face?
― J0rdan S., Monday, 24 November 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link
harry is a predestined solo artist but i feel like it's a toss up b/w the other 4 as to who might emerge with a viable career
well, not who "might" because niall won't. but who has the talent musically to be a decent solo artist.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 24 November 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link
zayn's adlibs are my fav thing in the world. there's too few of them on four.

If it weren't for his atrocious hair, Niall would be the cutest

Anyway, this piece seems relevant to the "who will go solo?" discussion: http://penguinrandomhouse.ca/hazlitt/blog/changing-minds-nick-jonas-one-direction-and-rare-act-pop-transference
― Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link
zayn co-wrote a few tracks for the album but they were all shelved. probably because the music direction he wants to go in is counter to the stadium rock ting they're doing now (which has been largely shaped by louis & liam).

his songs are great!

his voice is kinda thin, though, not sure i could take a whole record

Which songs are Louis'?
― Tim F, Monday, 24 November 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link
Yeah there's a reason he gets the least solos by some margin
a lot of his credits are cowrites with liam + producers, but on the new record: "steal my girl," "ready to run," "no control," "fireproof," "clouds," "spaces"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link
"no control" would be one of their best songs ever if louis wasn't leading the chorus; as important as it is for the larrybait.
harry is self-evidently the solo star.
― prolego, Monday, 24 November 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link
Haha that list makes perfect sense.

is Louis the other brunette with fucked-up hair and the stupid tattoo? IIRC he's the one who super-embarrassed himself on SNL

"no control" is dope, in an alternate reality they go off in that direction and make the good third strokes album that never existed

I think so but dan that arguably describes three of them.

J0rdan u mad.
Not as mad as Alfred saying that "no control" is like anco but pretty mad.

would love this if they also kept their fake queen jams and whatever "fireproof" is (amazing)
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link
Hah, the verses on "No Control" do kind of sound like the Strokes. I don't know if they'd write a chorus like that, though.
― timellison, Monday, 24 November 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link
Actually I feel like One Direction at their most rock are approaching Fall Out Boy at their most pop - the distance between "No Control" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "Miss Missing You" or "Where Did The Party Go?" seems pretty small to me.

i'm very impressed at how they've managed to avoid most of the pitfalls of boyband maturation - no attempts to go solo, no attempts to go macho, etc (and whatever your personal taste in dreaminess nobody's gone chris kirkpatrick on us). but while it's interesting they're moving towards folk balladeering rather than r&b balladeering (maybe there's more precedent for this in uk boybands), these guys just have too many ballads for my tastes.

there's definitely something that's too mumford about them -- even down to, like, harry's hat obsession -- but there's still a certain... essential boy band-y lightness to their ballads that i really like. in that certain sense they sort of feel like an updated version of the backstreet boys to me.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 24 November 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link
i mean compared to bsb by album four it's just refreshing that they aren't aggressively trying to let us know what horny players they are while one jumps forward spewing melismas at the end of every song

Weird that we're talking about "no attempts to go solo" and that the band is in a good place when the only press I've read surrounding this album makes it sound like the band has maybe a year or two left before a split / haitus

The media has been predicting their split since their debut. Everyone expects it because it's so built into the conventional boyband arc. So they treat every moment of conflict as a potential breaking point. It's weird actually how hotly the media at large seems to be almost restless with anticipation for it.
― Greer, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 05:37 (nine years ago) link
I suppose One Direction's different enough from previous boy bands to consider their trajectory might differ from their predecessors. They are less single-oriented, more album oriented (that's probably the reason why Midnight Memories sounds less uneven than Millennium, the downside to this being nothing in their catalog is as explosive as Everybody, Larger than Life, The Call or Bye Bye Bye). They're less about the dancing and more about the songs and singing; one could assume that may help in a future transition into maturity. I can hear some Coldplay, some U2 in them, which makes me think they are to those bands what the Cheiron generation was to Bon Jovi, in the sense they captured the arena rock from the previous generation and distilled it into pop singles. The possible advantage to One Direction being that their particular type of arena rock influences may be more suited for displaying adulthood.
― cpl593H, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 16:44 (nine years ago) link
i'd argue bon jovi did a pretty fine job distilling arena rock into pop singles as it was - part of my problem with one-d's floor stompers is their relative smoothing out of what was already pretty damn smooth.
oddly enough, their inability to dance was actually one of the reasons i couldn't take them seriously initially. just five reality contestants hopping around awkwardly next to each other, reading the Non-Threatening Boys language given to them. That it's gelled to the the degree it has makes me wanna tip my hat for cowell for finding some collective chemistry that wasn't particularly obvious to me.
are there any album cuts one should check out if i love "kiss you" and "best song ever," i'm not fully on board with "midnight memories" and "steal my girl," and couldn't care less about the dorm-serenade ballads beyond noting some Sensitive Lad lyrical touches?
