Have prices declined on new and used CDs? They hadn't the last time I checked but it's been months.

I think this is the first year of my adult life that I've been able to answer that question with a "No."

Top category, but if you had said "for full price", well, hmmm..

Pretty sure this is my first new cd-free year too. Possibly 2013 too.

Does it matter if we bought the CD for ourselves or as a gift?

MarkoP, Friday, 28 November 2014 22:28 (nine years ago) link

Ten to twenty. Sooner or later I'll buy an external hard drive and ween myself off new album sleeve smell.

Probably the first year I have bought any quantity of new CDs in a while - working in a new town, no turntable until recently and not much vinyl in the area, but with a CD player, so, out of boredom, bought some new stuff.

same here, had a bit of extra money this year so bought a few CD's (16 or so?) cos I like to have something to listen to while driving

I've moved to mostly online acquisition of CDs, but it's still my preferred format. I had to buy an lp+CD this year but it wasn't too expensive. Amazon is my main source, if I wait a couple of weeks after the release date I save almost half.

Mind, I almost always have heard these CDs before I own them.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 28 November 2014 23:36 (nine years ago) link

No. I bought more physical music this year than I have done in years but not on cd. Some was bought from a shop though.

I went to a record store once this year, shortly after my family's finances got back on track after a few rocky years and I vowed to get back in the habit of buying occasional CDs to listen to in the car. a couple months later, the CD player in my car stopped working. hopefully I'll get it fixed at some point and resume buying CDs but at the moment i have no motivation to get more.

answered 1-10 even though one of the 4 purchases I made that day was a 13-disc Little Feat box set.

I still buy CD's, and I’ll still buy them until we get to the point where a digital album (usually 256 kbps) matches the utmost quality of a CD release. And really, even if we do hit that digital sweet-spot, I think I'd still buy an album on CD. For me it's always been the ultimate signifier of owning a piece of art, no matter how middle-brow it comes off as.

I think there was only 1 new CD I bought in a brick-and-mortar store this year. A few more I bought online. But I mostly buy MP3s.

I bought several dozen CDs this year, but only one as a new release from a brick-and-mortar store. tbh this is not unusual, I buy a lot via mailorder or Discogs/eBay. I probably bought a dozen used CDs from the same store (the one CD is the new Velvet Underground box set, so I guess that might count as six).

Not yet. 10 or so second-hand from brick & mortar, 2 second-hand from Discogs, maybe one at a show - super-rare to see this now, though - 15 or so new online from brick & mortar with a web presence, or direct from artists' sites or representatives, or Amazon while I was in the US and could get free shipping. Won't vote until the year's over, though!

As above, not yet. Next month, I'll go to a store and buy one for someone as a Christmas present, just as I did in December last year, and the year before. I do occasionally buy CDs for myself from Amazon or eBay. It seems like a good idea at the time, because I've listened to a lot of songs by the artist on YouTube and have this urge to own a remastered edition with top sound quality, but when I get the CD I never listen to it. Probably because by that time I'm listening to something else on YouTube instead.

dubmill, Saturday, 29 November 2014 09:06 (nine years ago) link

I, too, will buy one as a gift in the next three weeks (probably). And I bought the Snootie Wild EP a month or so ago at a store.

That may be my only new CD purchased at a store in 2014. Maybe one other I can't remember.

I'm pretty much down to buying only stuff that: 1) I don't get a promo for, 2) isn't available on vinyl and 3) I really want to hear. Snootie doesn't quite meet #3, but it was an impulse buy.

(Guilt-reduction note: I do try to buy vinyl of as much stuff that I get promo'd and like as I can possibly afford.)

alpine static, Saturday, 29 November 2014 09:13 (nine years ago) link

I think the last time I did was 2010 but only because I had a gift card. I mostly stopped buying CDs after my whole collection (except for, miraculously, Star Time) was stolen in 2008.

8 cd gig
2 cd hmv
4 cd magazines (wired, mojo)
3 cd unknown
1 digital amazon

7-10 so far, which includes cds bought with magazines, but tbf i only bought the magazines for the cds. one of those 'cds' was a 5 cd box though. and i usually pick up 3 or 4 when home for christmas.

additionally / conversely, i have bought 16 dvds and dvd box sets from amazon / amazon market place. in the same period and probably half a dozen or 10 more in fopp / hmv.

Well over 20 here. My local indie store doesn't bother with major or major-distributed stuff anymore, so if my travels don't take me to a bigger indie (e.g. Princeton RX/Vintage Vinyl in NJ) I'll mail order from Amoeba -- they ship free within the US and one weekend a month they're 15% off everything. Use ImportCDs.com for the occasional import that I can't find from the aforementioned places.

most have been charity shop/bargain bin purchases, the rest head/hmv, and amazon.
eg. got the BLONDES 2cd set for 1p at fopp the other day !
i asked the bloke behind the counter if it was a misprint.
nope.
they genuinely were selling off stuff for 1p.
love the fact people are handing over their cd collections to charity shops cos its now regarded as a shit format.

On average, at least one CD a week, but I work at a record store and get new CDs at cost.

Echoing some of the sentiments above, I still like CDs, and I like that used ones can now be had for pennies on the dollar. I'm probably not representative, though. I mean, I'm a relic. I primarily use iTunes to burn mix CDs for the car, and I've been sorta looking around for a CD display shelf.

Still prefer vinyl, but when new vinyl is like $32, there's no contest here, I'm afraid, especially since I don't really give a shit about digital downloads. If I'm going to drop >$25 on an LP, it better be a rare jazz record or something, not, like, the new Cloud Nothings or something.

It's very rare that any of my CD's get anywhere near my CD player nowadays, if I do get my CD's out it's to convert 'em to files to put on my phone, portable mp3 player or my computer. There was once a time when I was buying a ridiculous amount of CD's per week, but over the last five years or so I've been increasingly using mp3 (or similar) as my primary format.

If I buy CD's or vinyl, it tends to be used and they end up getting converted.

had the fortune to visit the Squidco store in Wilmington, NC.. that was a treat. they've got their inventory in a front room, arranged on broad shelves, library-like. they're primarily a mail order business, but you can purchase items in the store. dunno if that counts.

vinyl prices are ridiculous, and you can still play CDs in a car. don't have a smartphone, and don't really use Spotify. mp3/flac/wav or whatever is viable/cheap/instant, but a strictly digital format is less desirable. cheap SanDisk player for 'on the go' shit. I traded in some old discs for a new CD copy of Syro, and found a used/promo copy of pom pom at a local shop. otherwise, Amazon is usually cheap as fuck. also have had good experiences ordering directly from labels online.
