I think there was only 1 new CD I bought in a brick-and-mortar store this year. A few more I bought online. But I mostly buy MP3s.

Yep, well over 20.

I bought several dozen CDs this year, but only one as a new release from a brick-and-mortar store. tbh this is not unusual, I buy a lot via mailorder or Discogs/eBay. I probably bought a dozen used CDs from the same store (the one CD is the new Velvet Underground box set, so I guess that might count as six).

No but bought a lot of used vinyl.

los blue jeans, Saturday, 29 November 2014 07:13 (nine years ago) link

yep at least 10-20

hence why i had to spend the other weekend reshelving cds to make room for my stack of acquired purchases :(

Way over 20.

from the straining pagan waistbands (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 29 November 2014 08:28 (nine years ago) link

Yes, somewhere between 50 and 70, all new, 40+ of them new releases and the rest back catalogue, probably 80% of them from brick and mortar shops.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 29 November 2014 08:33 (nine years ago) link

Counted. 55 of which 38 are new releases.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 29 November 2014 08:38 (nine years ago) link

Not yet. 10 or so second-hand from brick & mortar, 2 second-hand from Discogs, maybe one at a show - super-rare to see this now, though - 15 or so new online from brick & mortar with a web presence, or direct from artists' sites or representatives, or Amazon while I was in the US and could get free shipping. Won't vote until the year's over, though!

As above, not yet. Next month, I'll go to a store and buy one for someone as a Christmas present, just as I did in December last year, and the year before. I do occasionally buy CDs for myself from Amazon or eBay. It seems like a good idea at the time, because I've listened to a lot of songs by the artist on YouTube and have this urge to own a remastered edition with top sound quality, but when I get the CD I never listen to it. Probably because by that time I'm listening to something else on YouTube instead.

dubmill, Saturday, 29 November 2014 09:06 (nine years ago) link

I, too, will buy one as a gift in the next three weeks (probably). And I bought the Snootie Wild EP a month or so ago at a store.

That may be my only new CD purchased at a store in 2014. Maybe one other I can't remember.

I'm pretty much down to buying only stuff that: 1) I don't get a promo for, 2) isn't available on vinyl and 3) I really want to hear. Snootie doesn't quite meet #3, but it was an impulse buy.

(Guilt-reduction note: I do try to buy vinyl of as much stuff that I get promo'd and like as I can possibly afford.)

alpine static, Saturday, 29 November 2014 09:13 (nine years ago) link

I think the last time I did was 2010 but only because I had a gift card. I mostly stopped buying CDs after my whole collection (except for, miraculously, Star Time) was stolen in 2008.

Well over 20 CDs but fewer than 2013. A fair bit of vinyl. I hardly ever buy anything digitally; 'mbv' was the last thing. Got a laptop now so streaming a lot more than ever before.

I haven't really worked out yet what my approach will be if I like something enough having heard it on Spotify to want to buy it.

Jeff W, Saturday, 29 November 2014 12:16 (nine years ago) link

Shop/online ratio for CD purchases = about 50:50

Jeff W, Saturday, 29 November 2014 12:22 (nine years ago) link

Around 80% of of my purchases are for stuff that I've liked on Spotify.

1 7" + digital bandcamp
1 7" + digital gig
7 cd amazon
2 cd amazon marketplace
3 cd bandcamp
3 cd jumble sale
1 cd fopp
2 cd freebie
8 cd gig
2 cd hmv
4 cd magazines (wired, mojo)
3 cd unknown
1 digital amazon
4 digital bandcamp
7 digital boomkat

7-10 so far, which includes cds bought with magazines, but tbf i only bought the magazines for the cds. one of those 'cds' was a 5 cd box though. and i usually pick up 3 or 4 when home for christmas.

additionally / conversely, i have bought 16 dvds and dvd box sets from amazon / amazon market place. in the same period and probably half a dozen or 10 more in fopp / hmv.

I like the explanatory notes up top. "You" = "person posting."

I bought a few catalog CDs for $4.99 at the Sunrise in Cloverdale Mall. I think they're all MCA, and there were a number of early-'70s Fleetwood Mac LPs. 10-20, probably.

man I think I'll keep a register like koogs did in 2015. I mailorder a lot, should be fun

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 29 November 2014 14:36 (nine years ago) link

Well over 20 here. My local indie store doesn't bother with major or major-distributed stuff anymore, so if my travels don't take me to a bigger indie (e.g. Princeton RX/Vintage Vinyl in NJ) I'll mail order from Amoeba -- they ship free within the US and one weekend a month they're 15% off everything. Use ImportCDs.com for the occasional import that I can't find from the aforementioned places.

i gave up counting once i got to 100.
most have been charity shop/bargain bin purchases, the rest head/hmv, and amazon.
eg. got the BLONDES 2cd set for 1p at fopp the other day !
i asked the bloke behind the counter if it was a misprint.
nope.
they genuinely were selling off stuff for 1p.
love the fact people are handing over their cd collections to charity shops cos its now regarded as a shit format.

Yeah to carry on from what Mark said, I did get a lot of secondhand CD's. It's amazing what you can pick up. I got a copy of The Rapture's "echoes" for 2 euros at my local petrol station last week!

God, I miss the MVEs in london where you can always find new, relatively newly released cds for under 5 pounds. Never figured out how that quite works.

the dreaded Laramie (reddening), Sunday, 30 November 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

No. I think I have bought a vinyl record or two where they give you a CD copy with it instead of a download code, but not sure if that was from a shop or direct from label. Also not sure if that would count.

emil.y, Sunday, 30 November 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

I buy vinyl and mp3s as regularly as I can afford (not very regularly b/c I am skint). I still buy CDs directly from a band at a gig if I want to support them (in this scenario they're cheap demo CDs, not full-priced albums).

emil.y, Sunday, 30 November 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

i've bought a few new CDs but a lot of CD packaging seems to being getting generally shittier and more perfunctory than ever, so i'm being a bit fussier about what i shell out for. have bought a huge shit-tonne of vinyl though, maybe about 600 albums? mostly v cheap used classical music from charity shops so that has kind of filled my stupid craving for physical stuff

ed.b, Thursday, 1 January 2015 15:33 (nine years ago) link

nope, useless garbage plastic

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:14 (nine years ago) link

It's very rare that any of my CD's get anywhere near my CD player nowadays, if I do get my CD's out it's to convert 'em to files to put on my phone, portable mp3 player or my computer. There was once a time when I was buying a ridiculous amount of CD's per week, but over the last five years or so I've been increasingly using mp3 (or similar) as my primary format.

If I buy CD's or vinyl, it tends to be used and they end up getting converted.

j., Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:52 (nine years ago) link

I basically only buy CDs if 1. they aren't on Spotify or 2. they seem obscure enough that they're likely to slip from major streaming services at some point and 3. I feel like I'll desperately need to hear them at some future point in my life. I bought two CDs last year, one from Amazon and one from eBay, both used.

had the fortune to visit the Squidco store in Wilmington, NC.. that was a treat. they've got their inventory in a front room, arranged on broad shelves, library-like. they're primarily a mail order business, but you can purchase items in the store. dunno if that counts.

vinyl prices are ridiculous, and you can still play CDs in a car. don't have a smartphone, and don't really use Spotify. mp3/flac/wav or whatever is viable/cheap/instant, but a strictly digital format is less desirable. cheap SanDisk player for 'on the go' shit. I traded in some old discs for a new CD copy of Syro, and found a used/promo copy of pom pom at a local shop. otherwise, Amazon is usually cheap as fuck. also have had good experiences ordering directly from labels online.

I buy vast numbers of classical CDs online but there aren't many shops around selling things at reasonable prices.

With pop, i'm not convinced that everything is going to be available to stream forever so i want anything that i like in either a DL or physical format.

Yeah, but my answer would have been very different were the OP not constructed to exclude vinyl. While I purchased only one CD, I bought a lot of records in 2014, many of them new and from stores.
