No, but hey I got that U2 record on itunes.

One new CD this year (Beyoncé) and that was only because it was cheaper than buying it from iTunes. With everything else it's been either vinyl or download.

Yes, 1-10. it is getting less and less every single year. will never buy a download.

I bought a few CDs that were packaged inside some vinyl records. Does that count? I wasn't exactly purchasing them directly (and would have been okay if the records didn't contain them and had digital downloads instead).

CDs seem pointless to me now. I enjoy flacs and play them on my stereo through the nice DAC, or put on a record. Only time I play CDs is if I'm renting a car and it doesn't have aux inputs.

Going with "over 20" Not sure on the actual #, but I do know I bought at least 10 new things at real record stores, and somewhat more at chain store "$5 or less" bins (although not as much of either as I did last year). I just started my second year on Amazon Prime, which has become my main intake for online purchasing. That sneaky AC/DC complete catalog for $5 sale they did was my first significant music download purchase (been buying tv shows from Itunes for a few years now). Most surprisingly, this is probably the first year since the late '90s wherein I didn't buy anything on vinyl. I don't have a turntable up at the moment, and it seems like used bargains are fewer and farther between. OTOH, I really haven't sought any out this year (didn't go to any record shows, barely hit any flea markets or antique shops or garage sales...) or have recently been of a mind to do any "rainy day" purchasing.

On average, at least one CD a week, but I work at a record store and get new CDs at cost.

Echoing some of the sentiments above, I still like CDs, and I like that used ones can now be had for pennies on the dollar. I'm probably not representative, though. I mean, I'm a relic. I primarily use iTunes to burn mix CDs for the car, and I've been sorta looking around for a CD display shelf.

Still prefer vinyl, but when new vinyl is like $32, there's no contest here, I'm afraid, especially since I don't really give a shit about digital downloads. If I'm going to drop >$25 on an LP, it better be a rare jazz record or something, not, like, the new Cloud Nothings or something.

Not yet. 10 or so second-hand from brick & mortar, 2 second-hand from Discogs, maybe one at a show - super-rare to see this now, though - 15 or so new online from brick & mortar with a web presence, or direct from artists' sites or representatives, or Amazon while I was in the US and could get free shipping. Won't vote until the year's over, though!

No. Bought a few online though. Real stores are just too expensive.

10 - 20 (almost entirely from Sounds of the Universe in London in 2014).
With digital, I buy flacs via Bandcamp which I subsequently burn to cd. I have a decent hifi set up so cd's still work for me.

Just over 20. Many more used CDs, and significantly more new and used vinyl. I plan to start paying for streaming in 2015.

It's very rare that any of my CD's get anywhere near my CD player nowadays, if I do get my CD's out it's to convert 'em to files to put on my phone, portable mp3 player or my computer. There was once a time when I was buying a ridiculous amount of CD's per week, but over the last five years or so I've been increasingly using mp3 (or similar) as my primary format.

If I buy CD's or vinyl, it tends to be used and they end up getting converted.

Oh, and I use Spotify a lot too.

i didn't buy anything, except an itunes download of 'black messiah'

j., Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:52 (nine years ago) link

I basically only buy CDs if 1. they aren't on Spotify or 2. they seem obscure enough that they're likely to slip from major streaming services at some point and 3. I feel like I'll desperately need to hear them at some future point in my life. I bought two CDs last year, one from Amazon and one from eBay, both used.

had the fortune to visit the Squidco store in Wilmington, NC.. that was a treat. they've got their inventory in a front room, arranged on broad shelves, library-like. they're primarily a mail order business, but you can purchase items in the store. dunno if that counts.

vinyl prices are ridiculous, and you can still play CDs in a car. don't have a smartphone, and don't really use Spotify. mp3/flac/wav or whatever is viable/cheap/instant, but a strictly digital format is less desirable. cheap SanDisk player for 'on the go' shit. I traded in some old discs for a new CD copy of Syro, and found a used/promo copy of pom pom at a local shop. otherwise, Amazon is usually cheap as fuck. also have had good experiences ordering directly from labels online.

I buy vast numbers of classical CDs online but there aren't many shops around selling things at reasonable prices.

With pop, i'm not convinced that everything is going to be available to stream forever so i want anything that i like in either a DL or physical format.

Yeah, but my answer would have been very different were the OP not constructed to exclude vinyl. While I purchased only one CD, I bought a lot of records in 2014, many of them new and from stores.
