stokes first album is fine, idgaf about them after that. big spoon fan tho, folks professing to love spoon's more avant/minimal qualities really need to listen to transference.

Love Spoon but their best record isn't even an album, it's that single they put out where both songs are dis tracks about their former A&R guy ("The Agony of Lafitte"/"Lafitte Don't Fail Me Now"). A Series of Sneaks, Kill The Moonlight, Gimme Fiction and this latest one are all time.

I like all three of the first Strokes records a lot better than most here, and even like the third better than the second, which I know puts me in challops territory.

If I had to choose, probably Spoon, although a Strokes best-of might beat them.

Oh the Laffitte single's really great.

LaFitte is great. Love Ways is another EP that poses a serious challenge to their proper albums.

Even though it almost sounds like I'm stumping for the Strokes ITT, I have a lot more affection for Spoon. They feel like a warmer bunch to me. Guys you could go bowling with. You know the Strokes don't bowl.

Mr. Bojangus (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 December 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link

i voted spoon bc they have more good albums, ultimately, but the first strokes album is better than most spoon albums except ga ga ga ga ga & kill the moonlight

I really liked the Julian Casablancas song in the movie Somewhere, "I'll try anything once". Just sleepy vocals and electric piano.

yeah this is almost definitely true

The Strokes did that single with Regina Spektor that ruled and that I always forget about.

I hate their fucking names. What the hell kind of a name is 'Nikolai Fraiture'? Worse than that, guys with stupid names like that always get pussy!

I think "Kill The Moonlight" is my favorite album from any of these two and "The Agony of Laffitte" is the best song in any of these catalogs.

I didn't care about Ga ga ga back in the day and my enthusiasm for them never recovered after that. On the other hand, I never cared about The Strokes. Also, I had never realized "Room on fire" was held in such high esteem. I thought it was a total New Jersey, or at least that's how I perceived it back then.

cpl593H, Friday, 12 December 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

oh come on, i'm sure the strokes bowl. perhaps only at the chic-est bowling lane/nightclubs in NYC, but they bowl.

ROF is really good. It would've been a different band's best album. It only really suffered in comparison to its predecessor. The third album (which I can't even remember the name of) didn't do anything at all for me.

I would've had a hard time choosing between Is This It and Girls Can Tell back in '01.

Mr. Bojangus (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 December 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

"Last Night" vs. "Take The Fifth"? No idea, man.

Mr. Bojangus (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

Girls Can Tell was a bit indistinct. I always wondering what the big fuss was about that record in particular.

i mean in a perfect world we would just remember that come home with me by cam'ron came out around the time of the strokes debut and kill the moonlight and be like "wow damn why were we even caring about a rock revival man, smh, let's just put 'losing weight' and 'welcome to NYC' on repeat"

just a couple of assholes having breakfast (slothroprhymes), Friday, 12 December 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

Spoon, so easily. I can't imagine ever listening to the Strokes apart from 3 or 4 songs, Spoon have got 3 or 4 albums I listen to regularly.

nate woolls, Friday, 12 December 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

I could never understand why The Strokes were getting singled out for praise in the early 00's when there was so much more interesting music being made by others at the time. Not even giving their albums a listen in hindsight made me warm to them, or indeed give me any indication of what the whole fuss was about.

this is why i never heard the strokes, i wasn't listening to much rock music or indie rock when they broke and once they were seen as having fizzled i never felt like going back to check out their 15-minutes moment

whereas spoon kept making good records and getting even better acclaim so eventually when i felt like i could do it on my own time i did check them out

Well, yeah. I love the album, but 'interesting' isn't a word I'd use to describe it. It's fun and it's stupid and it rocks.

Mr. Bojangus (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 December 2014 22:03 (nine years ago) link

My Strokes appreciation is probably aided greatly by the fact that I first heard (and quickly bought) the album in a record store. If I'd waited for the hype, I probably wouldn't have given them a chance.

Y'know, I was going to vote for the Strokes under the opinion that as tedious as their music was, I spent a lot of 2001/2 wrestling with how physically attractive I found them.

But now I look at photos of them, and I just think... jeez, what kind of heavy drugs was I taking in that period to make that band look even remotely sexy?

(Don't answer that.)
