Tough one. Went with I Ain't Marching Anymore

If "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" were from this year I'd strongly consider it - one of the most unique singles ever.

As it is, it's between "See My Friends", "The Kids are Alright", "We Can Work It Out" and "Make It Easy on Yourself" for me.

I still find "See My Friend" startling. It's just this perfect blend of Ray's olde England perspective and psych overtones.

Yes, really great record. Watching them lip-synch this on Shindig, they are one of the few groups from the time who can keep from inappropriately smiling at the camera.

Has anybody ever done a thread on "precursors to the Velvet Underground sound"? Because Shangri-Las and records like Lou Christie's "Lightin' Strikes" (I'm thinking of the guitar solo more than the rest of the single), mixed with La Monte Young or something, could make for an instructive mix tape.
