Is there any kind of origin story about how YT and RHQ teamed up? How much of a factor was Birdman? (research question)

I haven't really listened to rap since 2007. What's some cool stuff I missed?

Hungry4Ass, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:16 (nine years ago) link

noz' year end lists are p comprehensive, this is the most recent one but has links to each past year (since 2005) at the bottom http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blunts/?p=8100

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:19 (nine years ago) link

Cheers flopson. That looks like, a great start. It's crazy how I know all that stuff on the 05-06 lists and then after almost nothing... did I change or did the music? Something I ponder a lot

Hungry4Ass, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:23 (nine years ago) link

i think a lot of ppl lost interest in rap around that time. at the turn of the decade there was a lot of speculation by certain critics (simon reynolds, sfj in partic) that hip hop had stagnated. deej made an imo classic mix that's probably still out there somewhere rebutting that argument. in hindsight i think it's clear 08-12' was a transitional period. many of the people weren't sold on gucci mane (the one rapper many held up in 09 as an example of rap's vitality) are now very enthusiastic about the generation that were influenced by him (critical love for migos, etc.) of course not everyone is down with where that transition has lead us (whiney g, for example) but it at least feels like there is more optimism and positivity about rap right now than any pt since i started reading rap blogs & keeping up with the genre

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:37 (nine years ago) link

*many of the people WHO weren't sold on gucci mane...

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

looks like deej's mix is still up here http://somanyshrimp.com/2010/01/30/best-raps-2009/

we should poll it imo

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 21:41 (nine years ago) link

I've heard some Migos and they're fun but they make me feel so old lol. Thanks for the deej mix link I just downloaded it.

if you take the rolling rap thread titles as a rough approximation of "lcd rap" trends you can kinda get a picture of why some people lost interest. ringtone & snap were very colourful, bouncy, immediate. and i think that when that was succeeded by the more monochromatic trap sound of autogoon & gun sounds many lost interest. fruity swag (another classic shrimp post this time by jordan: http://somanyshrimp.com/2009/06/25/k-e-producer-of-the-summer/) is maybe a counterexample here, but it never really took off at the time and i would argue is at the peak of its influence right now (k camp, young thug.) we stopped that model of thread naming in 2013 in favour of self-aware rap critic in-jokes, but my suggestion that year was 'sunz of mane' which i still think is hilarious but was maybe too divisive. this past year's trend was "weird voices" (to be forever documented in this horrifyingly named whiney thread ayo best coco yayo maco wacko no-fi schmoundcloud dooblebob vine rap thingy of 2014) and it seems like people are finding their way back into rap through this stuff. joe now posts to rap threads for example, and i've had many irl friends ask me if i've heard of young thug, etc.

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 22:07 (nine years ago) link

in rap more broadly 2009 was an amazing year of new rookie artists that were often dismissed as nonserious & have since become canon or successful or both.

in late 08 (iirc) dj drama was raided for selling mixtapes using industry beats ... so all the rappers started releasing mixtapes with all-original material, '09 was the point where the industry totally bottomed out & everyone was downloading free mixtapes for the first time. critics thought freddie gibbs was the only thing worth hearing but basically in 09-10 you have the arrival or peak output of:

drake
nicki
gucci
max b
lil boosie
jcole
odd future
waka
Wiz Khalifa
Currensy
meek mill
big krit
travis porter
lil b

plus the beginning of regional careers that wouldn't get attention until more recently: kevin gates, king louie, danny brown

Any thoughts on the Bada$$, gents? I guess it's better than I expected but there's something about the blatant anchronisms that rubs me the wrong way. I mean, he would have sounded outdated in 1996, when he was one year old. The two "drum and bass" tracks are downright horrible, Teach Me in particular. Like Me is pretty nice though, I've got to admit.

badass is awful

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 19 January 2015 17:25 (nine years ago) link

ehhhhhhhhh, it's actually not too bad. And this is coming from someone who detests "real hip hop". It has a loose vibe and is pleasant enough. He can live.

longneck, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:27 (nine years ago) link

no one should detest real hip hop

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

There were quotation marks involved. Please do weigh in on the album though.

longneck, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

the badass album is pretty enjoyable, barring the drum'n'bass stuff (heard that and was like O RLY? a roni size tribute?). even if the thinking behind the revivalist style can be reductive & disagreeable, i don't mind listening to the music itself.

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:17 (nine years ago) link

speaking of revivalist-minded rappers, i feel like lupe fiasco has reached new levels of insanity and/or trolling with this track

it sounds like v fun goon stuff, interesting beat/production, also a trae the truth guest spot - but i figure since it's lupe, it has to be some sort of stealth attack on trap-rap or some similarly didactic shit...right?
