2009, though I can't remember what the #2 and #3 of last year sound like, they might be really bad (I like 'Get Lucky', though).

That 2003 top 10 is great bar the number 1.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 23 January 2015 12:01 (nine years ago) link

I think Daniel was the first time (of many) where ILX tracks poll introduced me to a song I would love.

the war on me (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 23 January 2015 12:19 (nine years ago) link

Voting 2008 which is weird cuz I will still read through the albums poll thread from that year once every few years...

the war on me (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 23 January 2015 12:20 (nine years ago) link

2011 is my favourite. Least favourite top three is either 2014 or 2009.

enjoy all years
therefore voted 2003

2012 the best for sure

ciderpress, Friday, 23 January 2015 14:14 (nine years ago) link

i think i like 2010's disposable wackiness a shade more than i like 2013's boring songs by established acts.

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

fyi, given that "paper planes" would have been disqualified in 2008 under current rules, the #4 of that year was friendly fires ft. au revoir simone - paris (aeroplane remix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzicqExJW3A

which is incredible, and that really would've been peak disco had it been in the official top 3

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:05 (nine years ago) link

yea that song is dope

johnny crunch, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link

2007 - one of Rihanna's most annoying songs plus Battles, which has really not aged well.

skip, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

2011: all killer no filler, tempered by the unfortunate way "212" and "video games" beat "super bass" and "countdown"

Tempted to vote for 2011 as the best top 3 for keeping "Countdown" at bay (Bey?)

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Friday, 23 January 2015 16:57 (nine years ago) link

Don't particularly love the group of songs on the whole, love the ILM idiosyncrasy:
2014: 2 On / Two Weeks / No Flex Zone
2010: Wut / Hard in da Paint / Round & Round

Don't particularly love the obviousness of the selections, but love the songs nonetheless:
2013: Get Lucky / #Beautiful / Still Into You
2011: 212 / Video Games / Super Bass
2007: Umbrella / Atlas / Paper Planes
2004: Toxic / Yeah (LCD Soundsystem) / Galang
2002: Work It / Weak Become Heroes / Freak Like Me

Love the selections, love the songs themselves:
2012: Inspector Norse / Call Me Maybe / Adorn
2005: 1 Thing / Biology / Since U Been Gone

Don't really like either:
2009: You Belong With Me / Daniel / Bad Romance
2008: Blind / Happy House / Paper Planes (well, that it got chosen a second time)
2006: Crazy / What You Know / My Love

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Friday, 23 January 2015 17:06 (nine years ago) link

Going with 2012 as the best year and 2006 as the worst.

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Friday, 23 January 2015 17:07 (nine years ago) link

yeah 2012 is my fav I think

The M.I.A. voters would have voted for "L.E.S. Artistes" or "Time To Pretend" though.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 23 January 2015 17:12 (nine years ago) link

votesplitting still would have given us the most magical top three in history

There was an embarrassing 2003 tracks poll but not sure how it compares to 02 and 04 for turnout and badness of points system:
i'd like to do a 'tunes of the year' poll now

Having said that even with 100+ ballots and the same points system as now the top 10 would probably have been much the same as it was

ILM top 10 singles of 2003

1. Outkast - Hey Ya
2. Girls Aloud - No Good Advice
3. R Kelly - Ignition Remix
4. Beyonce ft Jay-Z - Crazy In Love
5. Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U
6. Lumidee - Never Leave You
7. Kelis - Milkshake
8. Basement Jaxx - Good Luck
9. !!! - Me And Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)
10. 50 Cent - In Da Club

Oh snap, I've never seen mention of this poll and wasn't able to find it even by looking up all threads with "2003" in the title. I'd always thought simply no one got it together to run a poll that year. Thanks!

The Reverend, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

Both these Girls Aloud songs way down otherwise awesome years.

The Reverend, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

yeah I would vote for the "Hey Ya" year as worst if it were here

example (crüt), Friday, 23 January 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link

Also found the results of these two polls

2000-2004 (From August 2004):
Hey Ya / Get Ur Freak On / Digital Love

2005-2009 (From July 2010):
1 Thing / Umbrella / Paper Planes

Oh snap, I've never seen mention of this poll and wasn't able to find it even by looking up all threads with "2003" in the title.

Yeah it took me a while to dig it out last time (linked to it on another EOY ILM polls thread somewhere) and the 00-04 poll was the first to attempt the nominations-voting-slow rollout process now institutionalised.

nashwan, Friday, 23 January 2015 20:52 (nine years ago) link

2000-2004 (From August 2004):
Hey Ya / Get Ur Freak On / Digital Love

2005-2009 (From July 2010):
1 Thing / Umbrella / Paper Planes

I have literally no idea what would take a 2010-2014 tracks poll.

Rude

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Friday, 23 January 2015 21:56 (nine years ago) link

"adorn (2:19)" / "adorn (3:13)" / "adorn (ellen live version)"

prolego, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:00 (nine years ago) link

seriously though, i could see the 2012 top 3 of "call me maybe", "adorn" and "inspector norse" being the 2010-2014 top 3. each one would have won in any other year and they're probably the consensus pop, r&b and dance tracks of the decade respectively.

prolego, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link

"Inspector Norse" being the consensus dance track of the past four years is an overwhelmingly depressing thing

Let me help you out Charlie XCX fan (DJP), Friday, 23 January 2015 22:17 (nine years ago) link

yup

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:19 (nine years ago) link

"Inspector norse" is the kind of track that polls much lower with distance and really, I hope, not the consensus dance track

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

In some ways it would be fitting, as the last five years have felt like all of the "beige" music has bubbled to the top, ticking off enough boxes to cast a wide net of interest but being safe enough to not challenge anyone or push them out of a listening comfort zone.

Let me help you out Charlie XCX fan (DJP), Friday, 23 January 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

Your buyers' remorse on Terje makes me sad, ILM.

Eric H., Friday, 23 January 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

Tho I would accept "Why They Hide They Bodies Under My Garage" as the acceptable consensus alternative dance pick.

Eric H., Friday, 23 January 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

I'll rep pretty unreservedly for all pre norse terje!

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:59 (nine years ago) link

Tiresome.

Eric H., Friday, 23 January 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Like all 3 songs:
2012: Inspector Norse / Call Me Maybe / Adorn
2008: Blind / Happy House / Paper Planes
2007: Umbrella / Atlas / Paper Planes

Like 2 of these songs:
2014: 2 On / Two Weeks / No Flex Zone
2006: Crazy / What You Know / My Love
2004: Toxic / Yeah (LCD Soundsystem) / Galang
2002: Work It / Weak Become Heroes / Freak Like Me

Like 1 song in here:
2005: 1 Thing / Biology / Since U Been Gone
2013: Get Lucky / #Beautiful / Still Into You
2011: 212 / Video Games / Super Bass
2010: Wut / Hard in da Paint / Round & Round

Like none of them:
2009: You Belong With Me / Daniel / Bad Romance

the QT conundrum (Moka), Friday, 23 January 2015 23:20 (nine years ago) link

Did Paper Planes place two consecutive years in no. 3?

the QT conundrum (Moka), Friday, 23 January 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link

Didn't we have a rule of not nominating any songs that placed in the top numbers the previous year? Or was that rule imposed after this incident?

the QT conundrum (Moka), Friday, 23 January 2015 23:23 (nine years ago) link

That was the incident which institutionalized the rule.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 23:36 (nine years ago) link

oh shit i just realized that was girl unit wut not le1f wut, hmm

flopson, Friday, 30 January 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

lol between that and ppl mistaking the ariel pink song for a selena gomez song idk if we can trust any votes for 2010

dyl, Friday, 30 January 2015 22:45 (nine years ago) link

ended up voting 2003 b/c "Hey Ya"

example (crüt), Friday, 30 January 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

2005 is maybe the best for me, w/ 1 thing my least fav of that group

johnny crunch, Friday, 30 January 2015 22:55 (nine years ago) link

Is anybody seriously embarrassed about liking "Hey Ya!" in 2003? Should they be? I mean it was seriously one of the most liked and likable songs going. I don't mind saying I got pretty sick of it at a certain point, but when it first dropped it was super fun.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 30 January 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Oh my god why have I never heard "Happy House" on e. Probably cause I've only done it once but shit...
