why wouldn't people speculate
I guess some profess not to have any interest in who the people they're talking to are; good for them? seems natural that others would wonder tho
― o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Monday, 26 January 2015 22:39 (nine years ago) link
I appreciate the reasonable sound of "seems natural that others would wonder" and from the OP, "it'd be weird not to consider it relevant in interactions with them, non?"
In practice it's random accusations whenever an argument goes south.
― Vic Perry, Monday, 26 January 2015 22:40 (nine years ago) link
with all due respect I think you may be missing the fact that a lot of those "accusations" are made jokingly

dean's big into his local sports too, loves his rugby and gets down to the millenium stadium as often as he can, loves cardiff city and fancies himself as a bit of a rascal when he's on the terraces

When someone new starts posting, and this instant mania develops about who it is or isn't, it always reminds me of the big slab and the opening scene of 2001. I find it really, really weird.

yeah, i don't think it's strange to wonder and speculate, but sometimes people seem bizarrely convinced that someone would spend time inventing a naive, challopy persona and committing to it for weeks on end. but maybe this has happened before and i'm the naive one

I think sometimes new posters show up speaking ILX lingo because they've been lurking for awhile before posting. RT actually seemed like a dude who stumbled on this board while googling Travis Scott, and got himself into a Cootie panic when he saw people writing about Taylor Swift and Charli XCX

Remember Treeship's earlier incarnation. But in general it is a lot of trouble to keep up, assuming you want to keep up, especially if you are not paying attention to ILX or the right threads on ILX when the transition occurs. Doesn't really matter of course, unless it is a poster you like and you wonder where they went or it is a poster you don't like and you want to maintain whatever filter, whether purely mental or browser doodad, that you use to deal with them.

there aren't any new posters
you can only register if your IP shows at least one previous registration. you can register multiple times without having been banned but you cannot register at all if you were not already registered. given that this is the system, it's no surprise that people wonder "who's this?" when a new poster arrives; the system is closed, this is an inherent quality of the system. all new posters are a poster we already know or knew under a previous name.
thought everybody understood this tbh

any excuse really
Mirror in February
The day dawns, with scent of must and rain,Of opened soil, dark trees, dry bedroom air.Under the fading lamp, half dressed -- my brainIdling on some compulsive fantasy --I towel my shaven jaw and stop, and stare,Riveted by a dark exhausted eye,A dry downturning mouth. It seems again that it is time to learn,In this untiring, crumbling place of growthTo which, for the time being, I return. Now plainly in the mirror of my soulI read that I have looked my last on youthAnd little more; for they are not made wholeThat reach the age of Christ.
Below my window the wakening trees,Hacked clean for better bearing, stand defaced Suffering their brute necessities; And how should the flesh not quail, that span for span Is mutilated more? In slow distasteI fold my towel with what grace I can,Not young, and not renewable, but man.

speculations, I say!
You can look for similarities between two posters or a place in which a new poster might say something untrue to throw off the fact that they’re the same poster as someone else.
