I love the version of "Feel So Sad" on the Medication single esp. when it all crashes into that huge throaty organ drone.

Always liked Darkside's last single "Retroglide" (def. has a Dream Syndicate sound here) http://youtu.be/-Pi407wYyRM

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:51 (nine years ago) link

hmm the one I kept off that album was Mystic Morning

you know what is actually impossible to find online/on youtubez etc is Slipstream singles

My memory might be playing tricks on me, but isn't there a track on Pure Phase (long, repetitive, no lyrics) which is made up of a combination of two tracks from an EP a couple of years before (Electric Mainline?) played simutaneously?

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:53 (nine years ago) link

itt stoners try to remember minute discographical details from the late 80s/early 90s

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:59 (nine years ago) link

all of the tracks on the Electric Mainline EP that preceded Pure Phase show up on the album in slightly altered form. As far as the "played simultaneously" thing goes, I think yr remembering the (possibly apocryphal?) anecdote that Pure Phase had two entirely separate mixes - one for the left channel and one for the right - mixed together for the final album.

Jason talked about this often at the time of PP's release, but I never got around to picking out the differences.

I hope I'm not the only one voting for "An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music"

plz also consider "Touch The Stars"

yr not thinking of the "Pure Phase Tones for DJs" EP are you? still have my copy of that around somewhere

anthony braxton diamond geezer (anagram), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 08:22 (nine years ago) link

Hm yeah I need to vote for that in some form but it prob makes sense voting for it as a track and then devoting my album picks to things more fully fleshed out as albums

I remember being very disappointed with the first Alpha Stone record when it came out and filed it away after a couple of plays. Worth digging out?

pure phase tones for DJs came out after Pure Phase

Skip it. The Alpha Stone records get better as you go forward but the first is the weakest.

I'm aware of that, I was suggesting that it might have been the long track NB&S was thinking of.

anthony braxton diamond geezer (anagram), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 20:18 (nine years ago) link

No, don't think I was aware of Pure Phase Tones for DJs. Having done a bit of googling I can give the track names, though this is a bit repetitive. For some reason, I got it in my head that 'Electric Mainline' on the Pure Phase album was a combination of 'Electric Mainline part 1' and 'Electric Mainline part 2' from the 'Electric Mainline' EP from 1993, with both tracks being played simultaneously. I can't remember if I actually read that, or if it was just some random idea I had.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

I think yr conflating the stereo mix anecdote ref'd above with them re-using the tracks from the EP on the album... although tbh the "entirely different mix for each channel" thing never made any sense to me from an engineering standpoint. Having a different mix in each channel is called... stereo.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 22:55 (nine years ago) link

some discussion of that: http://forum.spiritualized.me/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9688

I think the album sounds great fwiw but I still don't get the distinction about the channels thing, basically it just means they took a super-long time to mix it

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

maybe he had two entirely different mixes already finished and decided he liked them both so why not combine them into a single mix? idk

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 22:59 (nine years ago) link

Because then each mix would be mono-ised?

Oh, (yesterday).

Mark G, Thursday, 12 February 2015 14:53 (nine years ago) link

Planning on voting on this but will probably be all Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized stuff. Possibly a Spectrum track or two but don't think I've heard any of the other stuff so am looking forward to the rollout.

groovypanda, Friday, 13 February 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link

with only 20 track ballots, I doubt anything by any of the lesser-known side acts are going to place. Unless someone puts an Alpha Stone track at number 1 or something. and how likely is that. I predict results being at least 75% S3 and Spiritualized

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 February 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

well I'm voting for at least four Spectrum/SB tracks, the hell with y'all

sleeve, Friday, 13 February 2015 20:38 (nine years ago) link

Gonna abstain because my ballot would be all SPZ, but looking forward to results.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Friday, 13 February 2015 20:42 (nine years ago) link

you should vote anyway

feel like i should vote for at least one track off of "phenomena 256" but i got no idea which one!

Any opinions on splitting up "Ecstasy Symphony" and "Transparent Radiation?" Have received ballots with both of them as one track (a la Perfect Prescription CD) and as separate tracks (like on the singles, etc.)

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 16 February 2015 05:39 (nine years ago) link

options:

1) add them all together

um, I think that's it.

Mark G, Monday, 16 February 2015 10:19 (nine years ago) link

i'm guessing those who chose the perfect prescription track are essentially voting for just "transparent radiation"?

sleepingsignal, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

forgot to vote for this (half-joking):

― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:39 PM (2 days ago)

as sleeping signal suggests, i'd assume that all votes for "ecstasy symphony/transparent radiation" (or suchlike) are basically votes for the perfect prescription version of "transparent radiation". it at least makes sense to treat them as such. i think votes for "ecstasy symphony" as a stand-alone track, however, should be tallied separately. it runs nearly 10 minutes and has nothing at all to do with "transparent radiation".

86/87 spacemen 3 are the greatest band of all time

leaning toward an all-spacemen ballot

Five ballots in and everything is a surprise.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 05:57 (nine years ago) link

for shame

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 20:06 (nine years ago) link

I have a list just about ready to go. It will be all Spiritualized songs though. I like Spacemen 3 and have a few albums but it's Spiritualized that I love and know the songs of really well.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 20:35 (nine years ago) link

I find Dreamweapon very enervating, so I'm not sure you'll me my SPZ + Spacemen 2 ballot befouling the results.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 20:46 (nine years ago) link

I'll be submitting mine tomorrow.

The albums one was fairly straightfoward, just need to finalise the higher placings of the tracks one

groovypanda, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 20:47 (nine years ago) link

the cutoff is the 21st. therefore, ballots are submitted on the 21st.

contenderizer, Thursday, 19 February 2015 03:12 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I don't like Dreamweapon either, didn't vote for it.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 February 2015 03:35 (nine years ago) link

Culling the 20 tracks was particularly tricky as I've had to leave out plenty of favourites

Just saw this, can cook up a ballot so I'll do this tom morning.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 14:35 (nine years ago) link

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:10 (nine years ago) link

mine is gong to be all Spiritualized, i fucking love Spacemen 3 but i have to listen and i can't do both bands tonight.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:11 (nine years ago) link

My response to the "all Spiritualized" posts better belongs in the irrationally angry thread, but I am doing my best to remain calm. And narrowing in on an all "O.D. Catastrophe" ballot.

describing a scene in which the Hulk gets a boner (contenderizer), Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:17 (nine years ago) link

I submitted a ballot that's heavy on anything made between 1987-1992.

klonman, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:26 (nine years ago) link

20 ballots now. Will take any/all last minute voting for another day or so. Rollout on Thursday (hopefully)

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 07:39 (nine years ago) link
