Also why is it okay to make fun of rich people but not poor people

Thank you very much Kate St.Perry.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

suzy would you care to etymologize your term 'wigga' for me

++++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

hey how come chris rock can joke about black people liking fried chicken but when i do it i get my ass kicked? how come my mailman can kiss his wife on the neck but when i cant?? whats the DEAL!

++++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

(minus 'when')(yall get the idea)

++++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

(Um, I know this is superhypocritical coming from me but can we back off on the "HAHA ETHAN IS A WIGGA" stuff, especially when he's not talking about black issues?)

(xpost: Try harder, Dom)

(xxpost: Are you SERIOUSLY comparing this to kissing someone else's wife or are you just typing too quickly to think about what you're writing?)

Dan (Eek) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Ethan: no, I think I've patronised you enough as it is, and I might have so much fun in persisting that I might explode or something. And ETYMOLOGISE! Such a big, big word! Diddums!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

It's different to make fun of rich people because of the way they act than to ridicule (suppossedly poor) people for their appearance (which isn't exactly the case here, but still).

Also, it's always different to ridicule those in power than those that have little power.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

(many xposts)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

dan considering i am at work (gasp - poverty wage!) i am definitely NOT thinking about what im writing but my point is the same as always is when ppl trot out the 'how come you can joke about rich/white/male/christian/etc ppl but not poor/black/female/muslim/etc ppl' (last seen on the cynthia mckinney thread - 'would you still be calling racism if she was white and the cop was black?'!!??!) omg difft circumstances for difft sitations!!! especially when its those in a position of elite moneyed status mocking those who arent!!

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

and yeah blind patriotism is ALWAYS worth mocking, my problem is that only represented about 1/16ths of suzy's post the rest was her usual class snobbery and contempt for fast food employees and people who dont have iD magazine choosing their wardrobe

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago) link

basically 'how come theres no united CAUCASIAN college fund?? thats REVERSE RACISM!!'

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

btw suzy maybe chill w/ the condescension towards somebody who's seen your baggy-ass acid wash jeans & tacky frieda kahlo prints

++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:12 (eighteen years ago) link

wow, this gets better and better. ethan remember you're arguing about how respectful it's appropriate to be towards "The Moran Guy"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

im arguing about how respectful its appropriate to be towards large groups of disenfranchaised people in attacking and using elitist stereotypes in attacking someone who may be from that group - if he was jewish would it be ok for suzy to say that hook-nosed kikes are whats wrong with america?? dont use or invent poverty to demean someone

++++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

*gasp*

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, military industrial complex, gutting of social programs, unchecked corporate rapacity, crisis in health care, lack of environmental protection--don't worry about any of those because:

"EVERYTHING bad about America" = fast-food workers' t-shirts don't fit 'em right

Martin Van Buren (Martin Van Buren), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

"if the situation was totally different and suzy said something totally different i bet you'd be shocked!"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm with Ethan here, if only because Suzy wasn't ridiculing the dude, but making Wal-Mart fashion sense & food-service employment the exemplar of EVERYTHING BAD WITH AMERICA.

So yeah, fuck that, fight the real enemy etc.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

remember youre arguing about in defense of sneering at fast food employees for their unattractive clothes

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

actually, dehumanizing factory workers by comparing them to fast food employees

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

poor people wearing clothes they can afford are whats wrong with america!!

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

wow, that is so condescending i have no idea what to say.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:23 (eighteen years ago) link

uh let me clarify its suzy who was seeking to dehumanize - ive been a fast food employee, it was the best job i ever had

+++++, Monday, 10 April 2006 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

While I basically agree with you, Trife, I think we all got the message.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

poor people wearing clothes they can afford are whats wrong with america!!

didn't you get the memo ethan, they're the ones who start the wars!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Being a fast food employee isn't so bad, but living in your mom's basement means you can post on ILX all day. Keep saving for that caps lock key, Ethan!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

And so, my son, began the "War of Morans" that shook the very foundation of ILE... that is, the camraderie felt in laughing at ugly and illiterate people.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:31 (eighteen years ago) link

don't use or invent poverty to demean someone

You did, Ethan, with your Wal-Mart drops and your slander, but the straw woman thing is waaaay boring! And you will not leave it alone! Did you make THAT much of a fool of yourself in London that picking on someone else is easier than, for instance, dealing with your extreme lack of social skills? Don't answer, just think awhile about what it might be like on the day you get a life.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm just trying to figure out if it's intentional that ethan accuses people of things on this thread just prior to engaging in exactly the behavior he decries (cf. "saggy-ass acid wash"; cf. supposedly demonstrating hypocrisy by nonsensically recasting the ethnicity in a power dynamic)

i'm goina get lunch

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:53 (eighteen years ago) link

you're getting lunch!

(i'm gonna get some too)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I think he may acually be referring to the Moran family of Greenville, south Carolina.

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:02 (eighteen years ago) link

look i dont know what all the arguing on this thread is about or whatever and frankly i don't care. i get the sense that some people ITT are talking shit about america and i just felt like i needed to make it clear that AMERICA IS THE #1 BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD and if you don't like it, then perhaps you ought to go to iraq and see if you like it there

ath (ath), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Jel, stop ruining the fun.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

It's too early for lunch here. Let's keep going with the ad hominem attacks. I was just starting to like this thread.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I like how that wigger ethan uses "yankee" as pejorative to set himself up as this unassailable authentic southern self-made man.

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Jon I would call you a yankee too. Because you are. :)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe it was addressed to Caitlin Moran and family, in which case I can't help but agree with the guy.

embers is a fast food restaurant.

Embers is hardly a fast-food restaurant. More like a low-tech Perkin's.
