all brilliant roles imo, esp. animal kingdom. he is one of my absolute favorite character actors.

also jessa's dad on girls!

yeah, he's great

scott, you should def see Animal Kingdom

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 23 March 2015 17:12 (nine years ago) link

i'll check it out.

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:15 (nine years ago) link

one of the best $3 used dvd purchases i ever made!

slothroprhymes, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:16 (nine years ago) link

ya ben mendelsohn is good stuff

lag∞n, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:20 (nine years ago) link

yeah he pretty much single-handedly makes this show addictive, and I like Coach and Lindsay Weir

Brio2, Monday, 23 March 2015 20:12 (nine years ago) link

and Carrie and Chuck Yeager!

Brio2, Monday, 23 March 2015 20:20 (nine years ago) link

really liking the back half of the season for its increased charles willeford/late 80s elmore leonard feel

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:43 (nine years ago) link

(lot more serious/straightfaced than those guys though, to its partial detriment)

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:44 (nine years ago) link

ya feel like they approached some leonard vibes and almost reached out and touched faith but ultimately dealing wit leonards plot mechanisms is too terrifying for every filmmaker, having the story turn on that tape of the childhood interrogation is nearly leonardian tho i will admit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:46 (nine years ago) link

a little more elmore would have gone a looooong way for this show

Brio2, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 13:45 (nine years ago) link

notable Ben Mendelsohn roles:
-bad person and criminal in /The Place Beyond the Pines/
--Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton)

I recall him being semi-likable in this one but okay. He's amazing in Animal Kingdom.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 14:41 (nine years ago) link

He is pretty good in the quite ridiculous but enjoyable Starred Up as well, also looking forwards to seeing Slow West with him + Fassbender .

xelab, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 21:13 (nine years ago) link

just finished this. pretty enjoyable throughout despite its occasional hiccups and cliches. mendelsohn should get an emmy nom, for real

still not quite sure who the creators wanted the audience to sympathize with tbh, if only because I can't really see how, in the end, any character is more worthy of empathy than danny despite the bad shit he ends up doing. like I I bought all of his motivations, everyone else comes off entitled in some type of way or another

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:28 (nine years ago) link

you know what is a cool better show than this with similar vibes: the affair, recommended

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:32 (nine years ago) link

entitled isn't exactly the right word for the other siblings, but idk I liked danny and chelsea and not really anyone else

other major deficiency is the women characters, well acted all around but p underwritten, even sevigny, which is odd bc these creators made damages and for all that show's numerous flaws the women on it were very well drawn imo

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:33 (nine years ago) link

xp really? heard a lot of strong hatred for that show but then again am going solely off reviews and one friend who watched it

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

i loved it, p much the height of prestige trash with some legit subtly and humor in there and cool characterization

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link

hm, I'll try a few episodes of that at some point. I'm a huge fan of both mcnulty and ruth wilson (alice morgan on Luther = 💯), although the idea of mcnulty as ennui-stricken author is kinda strange

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link

i dont want to spoil anything but mcnultys character is so perfect

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

The Affair has some good stuff but was pretty underwhelming as a whole imo

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Saturday, 28 March 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

I thought The Affair was terrible and have always found West a really terrible + appallingly wooden actor, he seems the opposite of Mendelsohn to me, who has the presence + talent to elevate cack like Bloodline to above average television. West has the opposite effect for me, he makes watching trash even more unbearable and drags it down even further with his anodyne shiteness.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:14 (nine years ago) link

ur anodyne shiteness

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:17 (nine years ago) link

I don't get paid for my anodyne shiteness :p Would you consider West a fine actor? I wouldn't trust your judgement on fuck all else if you did.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:27 (nine years ago) link

sure hes fine

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:40 (nine years ago) link

He is amongst some of the worst British ex-Eton actors ever, he represents mostly what I hate about the class system in my country. But at least you can enthuse about what you like about him rather than giving non-committed monosyllabic smart arse replies. At least I hate the talentless cunt and really feel the hatred.

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:53 (nine years ago) link

i appreciate and salute your passion for the topic of dominic west but at the same time i dont actually owe you any sort of explination, i will say tho that the same things that makes him perfect as mcnulty makes him even more perfect for this role i really enjoyed the performance

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 March 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link

Mcnulty is just a tedious stock macho Irish/American character and the writer he plays in The Affair is even sketchier and more badly written than that, only saying this because you fucking started it and now I am making pithy little comments on your fucking worthless opinions:p

xelab, Saturday, 28 March 2015 23:29 (nine years ago) link

my opinons are very worthwhile, clearly

finally watching the finale tonight. Thought this developed very nicely. It's easy to forget what Danny's gasoline runs contributed to. A credit to the performance. When you remember, it's impossible to side with Danny. But you still want to side with Danny.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 04:22 (nine years ago) link

Guess you can also credit the fact that you have no backstory for his innocent victims.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 04:23 (nine years ago) link

he didnt know

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 13:12 (nine years ago) link

Until he did. And then his response was "ok, this guy is a big timer. I'd better move drugs for him."

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

Guess that's unfair. But he was still trying to get the drugs moved after he knew.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:06 (nine years ago) link

at that point he's gone too far down the road of his ultimate goal (making his family pay for what they did to him) to turn back from his dealings with lowery. but I definitely think it shakes him up, which is a testament to both how complex they made danny as a character - at the expense of other characters - and how well mendelsohn plays him

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:17 (nine years ago) link

to be fair I could be projecting bc of how much I like the character, who could've easily been just another antihero to add to prestige TV's list of antiheroes but is ultimately too complicated to fit in that box. the other rayburns, especially the pig brother, are more typical antihero than danny

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

pretty good show. agree that danny definitely elevates it. not too enthused about a second season with danny 2.0.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:42 (nine years ago) link

i think, more than anything else, i just enjoyed this for its slow pace and setting. the acting was usually decent, if the characterizations weren't always. this was ideal for netflix, as it was probably too slow to sustain week to week interest.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

shd just have mendelsohn play him too

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:48 (nine years ago) link

or actually i bet what they do is have tons of flashbacks filling in the story as to how he got so desperate

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:49 (nine years ago) link

a godfather 2 type scenario if u will

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

hmm. i like it.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:57 (nine years ago) link

seems likely right

lag∞n, Sunday, 29 March 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

yeah but i fear it will involve a lot of teen angst with 2.0 as well. though i did think it was pretty funny how little anyone gave a shit about john's son.

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

"dad! but why can't we hang out with our transparently creepy uncle!"

ryan, Sunday, 29 March 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

I enjoyed the second season but then again I am a sucker for slow burning noirish crime dramas

paolo, Friday, 22 July 2016 08:36 (seven years ago) link

I did think the bit at the end with Kevin killing Marco was a bit much though. Did he think that this would save John and Meg or did he just panic?

paolo, Friday, 22 July 2016 08:38 (seven years ago) link

he just panicked

sarahell, Friday, 22 July 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link

I thought that was the case but it seemed very out of character as Kevin hasn't been violent before if I remember right. Great show overall though, very atmospheric

paolo, Saturday, 23 July 2016 10:24 (seven years ago) link

three months pass...

Can someone clarify something for me, having just finished season 1? the first few episodes lean pretty heavily on a flash-forward scene of John dragging Danny through the swamp in striped seersucker suits. At about episode 8-9 you see that the suits are for Meg's wedding but Danny dies and Meg doesn't actually get married. Did I miss something major (like a whole episode!!) ?

cancelled, from what I read....did season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

akm, Sunday, 6 November 2016 18:46 (seven years ago) link

It's been cancelled after season 3.

six months pass...

We chained eight episodes of season three yesterday - the bent coroner is straight into the pantheon of great minor characters.

I hope the cancellation doesn't mean they haven't brought the whole thing to a satisfying conclusion.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 16:56 (six years ago) link

four months pass...

First half of the last series was quite good but those final episodes were a complete crock

paolo, Monday, 16 October 2017 08:47 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed the bleakness of the conclusion well enough but the second series had clearly set a number of plates in motion that they weren't able to resolve in time. I got the distinct impression that a number of plotlines had been very hastily rewritten once the series was cancelled - characters just suddenly keeling over and dying or shooting themselves in the head etc.
