i remember i was watching the wire w/ my parents & the dockworkers do this in season 2, asked them about it & my mom said was def a real thing among certain hard drinkers

she grew up outside boston & the verdict takes place there - lol maybe its one of our absurd provincial things that migrated?

i have never seen or done this but it sounds worth trying at least once. what kind of beer do u think it would work best w/? a stout i'm guessing?

Mordy, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 20:48 (nine years ago) link

maybe i don't like eggs enough or am just a traditionalist when it comes to beer drinking, but this seems dumb. why would i drink a beer with an egg in it when i can just drink a beer WITHOUT an egg in it?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 25 March 2015 20:51 (nine years ago) link

xp a stout actually sounds like a good idea bc of the orange julius quality. the whites probably make it frothy like a pisco sour. but they always use a light beer on screen.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 20:52 (nine years ago) link

it's probably worth trying, but I'm saving it for, if not absolute rock bottom, at least a local minimum

not really talking about putting beaten eggs in a beer but this maybe sounds good https://tasteinspired.wordpress.com/2011/01/30/red-beer-red-eye/

I only know of this through the lyrics of the Devo song Social Fools and it sounds pretty weird.

raw eggs are rich in cysteine: Cysteine has been proposed as a preventative or antidote for some of the negative effects of alcohol, including liver damage and hangover. It counteracts the poisonous effects of acetaldehyde, which is the major byproduct of alcohol metabolism and is responsible for most of the negative after effects and long-term damage associated with alcohol use (but not the immediate effects of drunkenness). Cysteine supports the next step in metabolism, which turns acetaldehyde into the relatively harmless acetic acid.

egg in your beer: A bonus, something for nothing, as in What do you want—egg in your beer? This expression dates from about 1940 and became widespread during World War II. The origin is unknown, since adding egg to beer does not improve the taste.

soref, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 21:31 (nine years ago) link

Red beer (Beery Mary, whatever) is delicious. Never tried the vodka & egg version. Sounds gross, but I have a deep aversion to the texture of raw egg. Yeesh. Just thinking about it gives me fantods.

pretty sure people do this almost exclusively with lagers, but my first thought was an oyster stout because of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prairie_oyster_%28cocktail%29

i realize this is a legit thing but asking me this question is kinda like asking "eating a hamburger with hair gel smeared on it - c/d"

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 21:39 (nine years ago) link

tsrobodo, Sunday, 29 March 2015 00:10 (nine years ago) link

if it is entire raw egg, I think it counts.

mayo is good and beer with an egg is potentially good. beer with mayo? sure, why not? it's just eggs with more stuff.
