(plus he's blocked by kendrick, rollins, and uribe, and i guess olivera, and only two of them need to get hurt to create an opportunity, which isn't outside of the realm of possibility)

xp and yes -- no catcher because i don't care to keep a catcher (so why draft one), so i'm picking one up once waivers clear because i have that NA slot which opened a spot on my roster. i'll have one by opening day. #strategy

i can also tell that i'll be in the market to trade for a 2016 27-29 guy next year, because after goldschmidt i've got... jansen, hughes, adams, boxberger, bailey. not really a beautiful list of prime-age heroes. (maybe one of them will stick, we'll see)

i honestly don't understand that logic, tbh. why saddle yourself with a catcher off the junk heap when you could have drafted a better one before before you got bench guys like Cabrera/Walker/Baez? certainly your starting catcher will have more impact than those guys. unless you just really didn't like the option you had at that point? i'm guessing that's it?

There weren't a lot of catchers I rated, but some of them were Gattis (went in 5th... too high for me), Mesoraco (rd 4, ditto), and then a few guys i was willing to wait until the end for -- martin, gomes, ramos, darnaud, wieters, perez... by the time i was down to the last two on my list, Ramos and Wieters, they went back to back in front of my Seager pick. that's when i decided i wasn't drafting one (it was the 2nd last round anyway). actually if you look at where catchers went it's kind of remarkable... MCCann right before my pick in the 10th, then d'arnaud right before my pick in the 13th, then ramos and wieters back to back right before my pick in the 16th... and you know what? i am okay with riding the waivers here. i mean is there any guarantee that those guys will be better than vogt? miguel montero? navarro? derek morris? jaso? grandal? etc etc etc.

i will probably cobble together a frankencatcher by picking up guys batting in coors or chase or against shitty pitchers. and my C spot will probably get 500 ABs, hit .250, 15 HRs, 70 RBIs, 70 HRs, 0 NSBs... which to me is p good production from that spot if you don't have posey/carlos/gattis.

I agree with that strategy -- at some point in the later rounds of the draft there's no point in wasting a pick on a 10th rate 2B/SS/C because you can pick up one on the waiver wire anytime. You don't gain anything by drafting them but you can lose out on decent bench players at other positions and keeper eligible players.

i'm glad you did! it set up my GRAND(al?) EXPERIMENT of mercilessly streaming craptchers all season! I will do my best ot record the results and compare them to real-life catchers. (yahoo introduced that handy game log last year, so it should be easy).

This is the first year I've drafted 2 catchers. The last few years I've been burned only having 1, who then only ends up with 400 ABs by the end of the season.

That's the thing -- fangraphs lists only 10 catchers as "qualified" (502 PAs minimum; I added Santana to the list though) and of those 10, only 4 put up decent-ish numbers (Lucroy, Posey, Gomes, Santana) and another 3 put up barely tolerable numbers (Perez, McCann, Suzuki... and I use tolerable loosely, Perez and McCann put up sub-.300 OBP and Suzuki's ISO was .095). The other three were intolerably bad (Navarro, Castro, Montero). I figured if I'm going to have shit at catcher, it might as well be shit I'm not attached to because I drafted it.

Now I feel that I've shown my hand 6 months too early and the FA pool is going to get picked over by people who think I "may have a point" but I don't care! This is going to be a rough year for me anyway. High-risk injury guys (Fielder, Tulo, Harper, Rendon), low-risk injury guys (Arenado, Goldschmidt), potential busts (Baez, Adams, my entire pitching roster)... why not make up my own dumb gonzo-moneyball scheme for backstops?

And after I wrote that I checked my player news. Anthony Rendon is getting a consult on his knee from Dr. Andrews, which I guess means they're going to invent knee-TJ, and Baez has been optioned to Iowa. Good thing I drafted THREE second basemen...

I think this is a sound impromptu strategy and the only logical response would be for us to clear bench spots for a third backup to the backup catcher.

Unless it was my plan all along to make you guys drop players for crap catchers, riding your sloughed-off players all the way to an Empty-C season victory~~~

i have 3 of the cardinals 5 starting pitchers, plus their closer and setup man.

mistakes were made

Catcher is such a poor offensive position that I usually don't care if they get only 400 AB because even my starting C will drag down my rate stats. If he goes on the 15 day DL then so what? Is it worth grabbing some crappy backup for two weeks who will go 2-20 with one RBI? The 2-20 hurts a lot more than the one RBI might help.

I have the luxury of being able to move my starting C to 1B, should the need arise, and I feel like I'd be missing out on too many counting stats without a decent back-up (rate stats be damned)!

i hope i never have to say to myself "good thing I can move my C to 1B"

in one of my other leagues i waited too long on 1Bs multiple times and ended up with Duda/Trumbo (with Santana as my catcher) so it could happen

i took a look to maybe send an OF offer your way but you look solid. maybe work betts & prado at 2B/OF, toss Pence on DL once season starts and patch with FA? your team looks strong.

yeah, i have a couple opening day moves i'll try to make that should patch things up a little. wish we could move players onto the DL before opening day so i could make the moves now!

i'm predicting a middling finish for my team this year, but hopefully not a disaster. yahoo added a dynamically predicted standings thing to the draft, and my team ended up being ranked last by a large margin!

considering Hamilton can be kept for the next five years and fielder is sort of a gamble (tho he looks ok so far), i felt Will was coming out on top. admittedly i'm more skeptical of Prince's chances of bouncing back than most.

i like billy hamilton, but not for our league.
