I had no idea James Mason was from Huddersfield, is it worth watching? (i will almost surely watch it anyway but still interested in your opinion)

Huddersfield is well served on the British Library's accents and dialects section (in marked contrast to Halifax)
― anvil, Thursday, 2 April 2015 10:37 (nine years ago) link
It is a creepy luvvie roots project where you get the feeling that Mason possibly doesn't quite dig what Huddersfield has become in the years since he left so he (or possibly the producers) imposes a Holm Valley/Meltham/Marsden centric vision of the town. The closest he gets to the north side is when he is at the Town Ground and the camera avoids the unpleasant social housing up the hill at Deighton or up the stinking, chemically polluted Kilner Bank towards Dalton. And there are no wide shots in the town centre to keep up this pretence that it is a wholly white town that has barely changed since the luddites were active. I suppose you could call it a deeply unpleasant curio!

maybe this could go here from another thread
"John isn't from round here, he's from down South somewhere but had also spent the 22 years based in Corsica.
He got a £450,000 pay out from the Army because he got blown up in Uganda and wasn't expected to live. He has 4 years left until he can officially retire, but his now a chef, in something army related
He told me had done a number of extractions, some in Iran and one in this country. He was tortured in Iran in 1995. He recently did some work in Syria. He showed me a bullet wound in his leg, i couldnt quite tell what was going on with his hand
We were on the bus to Haworth, he said, when he first came to the area he spent 6 months in Haworth. He said no one had lived there for 6 months, and there was a rat. the rat wasnt frightened so he was able to kill it with a brick. He told his landlord and the landlord told him to buy some traps. Over the next couple of weeks he caught 14 or 15 rats and put them in the freezer. When the landlord came he took them out and wrapped them up and gave them to his landlord as a moving-in present
He spent some time in the brecon beacons where the army do some exercises, and during a training exercise 6 people died from hypothermia and it got into the newspapers

horses being washed in random locations/tethered at the roadside/running amok round an estate are reasonably common in Hull, which has a significant traveller community. we still get rag and bone men using horse-drawn carts. there was a pony i used to feed mints to regularly on my walk to work. also there's a section of west Hull called Gypsyville.

Selfishness of using kids paddling pool to wash horse very real, working horses however are not real. Bit suggestive of an organic connection to pre-colour tv era working class culture, the absence of which is a defining trait of Real England imo.
