having a panellist disappear in the middle of a show, seems odd.
the show still doesn't seem to know what it is, i don't think. keeps tweaking the format, seemingly at random.
― koogs, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:42 (nine years ago) link
I didn't enjoy last night's show at all, with Keith Robinson making weird sex change comments and Larry going all in on execution and Alex Wagner disappearing before the final segment, it was just an ugly episode.

― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link
The panels are 3 guests now instead of 4, and they tweaked the set a little bit with a new roundtable. Content is still hit or miss depending on the topic/guest combo.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link
The show just seems like it's trying too hard to capitalize on the think piece trend. Like they needed an angle with this show and they see how both think pieces are popular and how shows like John Oliver can resonate on the web afterwards, so they keep attempting to provoke that effect.
― Evan, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:00 (nine years ago) link
At least with Maher's show the conversations actually come about pretty naturally, yet LW segments like "weak tea" feel forced due to timing constraints and desperation to inspire think pieces imo.
― Evan, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:09 (nine years ago) link
It's been quite a while since they've done a straightforward "Keep it 100" segment.

watching some of these made me realize that i kinda got all the larry i needed on the daily show. like, it was the perfect amount of larry. kinda like when you meet someone who you think is funny/interesting and it turns out they aren't as funny/interesting when you spend a lot of time with them.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link
I dunno, I still watch every night because I like Larry in general. If it was 30 minutes of Lewis Black every night, I'd probably be homicidal.

― Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:59 (nine years ago) link
I think the Daily Show Wilmore counts as more of a character ala the "Stephen Colbert" character that spun off into the Colbert Report (which built on the ridiculousness of his Daily Show appearances). Wilmore's show is boring and too nice because Wilmore seems like a genuinely nice, kinda boring guy and he doesn't have the force of personality of a Maher, Stewart, or Oliver. He moderates when inciting people would make a better show.
Also kinda seems like the Nightly Show is, in general, too afraid to be too similar to any of the other news-comedy shows and wind up being a bland version of all of them.

As reported by Variety, Comedy Central has picked up Larry Wilmore’s Nightly Show for another season, giving it a spot on the network’s schedule through the end of next year. If Wilmore’s show is doing well enough to get another season, then this is probably a good sign for Comedy Central’s post-Stewart and Colbert era, especially since Trevor Noah’s Daily Show doesn’t premiere until later this month. That means Wilmore has been going—and going strong—without what will soon be his more high-profile lead-in ...

everything i know i learned from facebook and nu-daily show and larry never ever get any time on my FB. as opposed to stewart and colbert which were constantly linked to for years. john oliver definitely gets all kinds of liberal outrage linkage. no social media buzz is pretty dire nowadays.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:21 (seven years ago) link
Nu-Daily is largely garbage, so that's not surprising. Much of Nightly was too nuanced for fb links, though. They mainly covered ongoing issues/behaviors. Sometimes they were really on point about a particular current event, but mostly it was a continuous discussion.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:24 (seven years ago) link

i feel bad because i loved larry on the daily show but i didn't really love him as host early on with his show and i kinda stopped watching. i didn't mind the back and forth of the guests but even that reminded me of a less exciting politically incorrect or somethng. and keeping it 100 seemed corny to me. but i adore black-ish so i get larry in spirit anyway.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:30 (seven years ago) link
They still had a panel every night, but they largely phased out the Keep It 100 gimmick and cut it down to one guest + 2 cast instead of 3 guests + 1 cast which was much easier to control. And the chemistry the cast ended up having was on par with Colbert/Carell era TDS.
