if it helps there hasn't been harmonium on a univers zero record since 1977 either.

I don't think I've ever heard another rock band quite as brooding as early Univers Zero:

ok, i don't have access to sales numbers, but i did want to get a gauge of relative popularity, so i went to see how many ratings each band's most popular album had on rym. heresie: 1032 ratings. skinny fists: 12,941 ratings. this does make univers zero considerably more popular than the yanagimachi film gy!be got their name from, as well as more than twice as popular as brothers-in-arms art zoyd (whose first album tops out at a mere 387 ratings, making them, inexplicably, less well-known than aqsak maboul), but my guess is that gy!be being more than ten times as well-known will help them carry the day here.

re: "sub-bukowski monologues" & the talky bits on Godspeed albums:
bukowski, who I've never read much of, is an interesting comparison -- his art seems so solitary, the Canadian collective's so social -- or am I missing your point?

if this is specifically directed at the New Zero Kanada EP track "Blaise Bailey Finnegan" where dude tells his longwinded story about going to court & telling off the judge on a traffic citation, I could see not being into that...

but "Dead Flag Blues" intro is so powerful as sheer atmosphere that the heavy-handed narration can't really do anything except bring out what we're already thinking/feeling
(maybe also important to note that I cannot be objective about a piece of music I listened to so often as a teenager, on car rides with my dad, &c)

& the bit about navigating the dark serpentine corridors & seeing the face of god on Lift Yr Skinny Fists is classique^utmost°

Big fan of Art Zoyd but I still haven't got any Univers Zero. Could swear I seen an old 70s European science fiction novel called Univers Zero.

When I saw agalloch, Nate played UZ's Heresie over the pa before they took the stage. I thought it was the most menacingly Stygian shit I'd ever heard and I had to bother nate on ilx to find out what it was. Thank you Nate!

four weeks pass...

Having just come across Univers Zero for the first time last week checking their music out online, I thought to myself 'wow this band's music kind of reminds me of GYBE! and they are from the 70s.' I've got a copy of Heresie and Heatwave on order now for myself.
