can't something good happen to someone - like i dunno jaime's hand grows back or cersei meets an old college friend?

whole ep was just bad things happening and then here's a rape with a neutered tortured man forced to watch.

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link

why are fictional depictions of sexual assault so much more difficult to watch than depictions of murder

lag∞n, Monday, 18 May 2015 18:35 (eight years ago) link

maybe cos they're less prevalent?

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:38 (eight years ago) link

yeah was thinking theres desensitization at work but im open to other theories too

lag∞n, Monday, 18 May 2015 18:39 (eight years ago) link

bcz murder is cool i guess idk

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:40 (eight years ago) link

cos we've all felt at some point "i'm so mad i could kill him/her"

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

but only on rare occasions would we get angry enough to want to assault someone sexually, eg christmas with relatives

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

feel like murder in fiction is rarely really murder its more usually a stand in for domination / power, idk if thats an essential thing or just a convention or what

But when Jaime had two hands he was an evil Disney prince.

But yeah the episode was pretty dark and hopeless feeling.

Jaime and Bronn sneaking around the Dorne gardens was cartoonish. Having them immediately locate his daughter/niece made the already small set feel smaller and any tension was lost as well. Then, to top it all off we get the horrible everything of the sand snakes showing up at the same time:

i guess killing and murder and death are kind of cornerstones for drama. rape is not a plot device in the same way, if you go back to your shakespeare or whatever there's killing everywhere but rape tends to be deployed to characterise someone as a true villain, relative to murderers.

So far everything about Dorne not named Oberyn has been goofy as all hell.
Is it me or did Elaria Sand's accent grow even more outrageous this season from last?

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:48 (eight years ago) link

Yeah Dorne seems like a v silly Aladdin sidebar

new adventures of hercules imo

Also that was probably the single worst fight they've ever staged, and this comes after the ridiculous Sons of the Harpy ambush.

Jaime and Bronn sneaking around the Dorne gardens was cartoonish

for what was painted as a suicidal mission it was sure going pretty smoothly, they just wandered in and had the bad fortune that the sand snakes were also there doing... whatever they were doing. bronn singing was a nice bit of fan service for we robson & jerome fans tho.

no I've left it up in my browser since you posted it - really, really bad

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:18 (eight years ago) link

i agree, that was a stunningly dumb fight, poorly staged and occasionally nonsensical blocking and some clumsy editing in a desperate attempt to make up for it.

sigh are we really nitpicking fight scenes again

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link

"nitpicking"

Evan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

r we karate chopping fight scenes again

lag∞n, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:32 (eight years ago) link

Maybe I've seen too many good fight scenes lately and this is pennance

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:33 (eight years ago) link

that fight scene was shitty is all

i think the problem is that the show is showing its seems more often this season than ever before. maybe this means they blew their budget on the second half of the season? i hope so!

ryan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:34 (eight years ago) link

seams, christ!

ryan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:35 (eight years ago) link

like the only reason why that gif exists is bc someone took the time to pause it and capture it with the intention of being like, "see? SEE?!!! I SHOWED YOU, THRONES GUYS!" like what a brave truth-to-power stance against HBO gif-maker-person has made by isolating a shot that i and many ppl prob barely noticed!

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:35 (eight years ago) link

I hardly think so. I was watching it last night and caught that sloppy shit.

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

We're mourning the inclusion of Xena: Warrior Princess meetings Ninja Turtles characters/acting/choreography invading our beloved and refreshingly gritty fantasy epic.

Evan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

But I liked the Jorah/Tyrion scene. Made me miss old man Mormont. That dude was solid.

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

tbf it was not a great scene of action but i only really am thinking that upon rewatching, when the moment played for the first time the story situation was of greater import to me - which, for me, is the ultimate barometer for this sort of stuff

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

Well again, had I not read the books I would have no real understanding of who the hell the sand snakes are and why they just popped up at that moment. The development of Dorne as a land has been a lot of shorthand, very choppy.

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:39 (eight years ago) link

that collection of girl ninjas are all pretty uninteresting and their last scene on the show was similarly badly blocked and played.

that i would agree with, the dorne part - like it's established who they are sort of, but in brief scenes one of which was very basil expositionish, as ppl pointed out

i liked areo hotah getting a baller moment against jaime tho

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

totes shit blocking 100%

lag∞n, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

The whole Sand Snakes narrative is terribly acted and written, and a silly gif of awkward larping kind of sums the entire thing up.

Evan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

Speaking of Dorne: in the opening credits the little snake climbing up the pole looks so corny and bad. Even worse than the Titan of Braavos.

polyphonic, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

alexander siddig (great brit charactor actor, what a surprise) has been effective in his brief scenes as doran, but they are really brief.

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:42 (eight years ago) link

Dorne would even benefit from a nice shot of the city, right now it feels like the whole thing is being shot in the courtyard of a nursing home.

Evan, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:43 (eight years ago) link

Sand Snakes seem like some toy company's attempt to introduce new action figures through the show

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:43 (eight years ago) link

after the 2nd sand snakes scene i agree with crits of the acting, but the writing is literally no different than any other self serious character on the show, of which there are many

New display name, thanks

lol

slothroprhymes, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link

More Siddig would be a major help. Most of the Dorne chapters are just his musings anyhow, seems like there's a lot to pull from.

Well again, had I not read the books I would have no real understanding of who the hell the sand snakes are and why they just popped up at that moment.

Wasn't it just last week that they had that long scene with the Sand Snakes getting a pep talk about swooping down on Myrcella and killing her in repayment for Oberon's death?
