slag tag is good but I think ass antlers is the best for that particular style.

ENBB, Friday, 7 September 2007 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

the one i am thinking of, if it actually exists, might be "hag tag." the tag sounds familiar.

AH WELL. I am totally derailing the hell out of this topic

Damn. I can't think of a good rhyme to go with hetaera.

Michael White, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I got one young, now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over, my wife is tattooed too.

Getting a tattoo doesn't hurt at all. i'm in the "I have them and don't give a shit whether you get one at all" camp.

And neither do you.

luna, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't want to know either, BUT I've had a couple of people tell me that passing kidney stones is worse. (drink lots of water and don't find out)

Sara R-C, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't men say that? They're just trying to keep up.

Ms Misery, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Not to offend anyone, as I know a lot of people get tattoos for personal reasons, but I don't get when people come in on LA Ink and are like "I am getting a pin-up girl on my arm to remember my mom/how happy I am right now/new career/the Alamo/etc." Everyone has their little personal story on that show...it makes me feel weird like if I were to get one all I could say would be (for example): "Oh, I just got this tattoo of nachos because I like to eat nachos," or, "I just thought this was a neat image." Do people expect you to say, "Yeah, I got this horse because I could never own a horse, but they also represent courage, majesty, and grace" when they ask about your tats?

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

People should expect a slap in the face when they ask you about your tats. It's seriously annoying.

kenan, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

When people (strangers) ask me about my tats I want to tell them to fuck off b/c it's really none of their business.

I do believe those shows require some sort of story to make it interesting television. Some are probably more shallow than others.

My boyfriend says he wants to go on there and get a tat of a cock and balls just because. I reminded him that Steve-o has no doubt already done this.

Ms Misery, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Miss Manners would be against it. "I would prefer you didn't ask. But I just happened to like this clip art of Abraham Lincoln kicking a tire. That is all." (My friend had great tat of such.)

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Then there are people who are more than happy to explain their tats whether you want to know or not: "I got this tattoo of Kermit holding a cross because I love KERMIT and I love JESUS."

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I have many clever and exciting ideas for tattooing myself. I am also a big wussy who is scared of needles.

Oilyrags, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Everyone has their little personal story on that show...it makes me feel weird like if I were to get one all I could say would be (for example): "Oh, I just got this tattoo of nachos because I like to eat nachos," or, "I just thought this was a neat image."

This is basically what I do. I think something is interesting, ponder it for a while, then get a tattoo. Not as a joke or anything, but there's no real deep significance to any of mine. Like this one, my most recent:

http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~jlkuure/board/30.jpg

I just thought it'd be funny to have a tattoo of an old-timey bike.

I don't think they really hurt that much. Some hurt more than others - insides of upper arms and my elbow hurt the most so far, but I've heard ribs are worse. I get a crazy endorphin rush which kind of numbs the pain anyway (and makes me super goofy afterwards). The worst part is when you think you're done and they go back and fill in missed spots or tweak things, going over spots for a second or third time after letting it sit untouched for a while.

And most people I know with tattoos don't care others have them or not, it's just not a big deal.

joygoat, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

If you have someone else do it, they can use professional equipment instead of the sewing needly you'd have to use yourself.

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost to Oilyrags-Again-it doesn't hurt. The needles make pretty superficial cuts. The gauge on the needle is nearly infinitesimal.

"People should expect a slap in the face when they ask you about your tats. It's seriously annoying."

This has never bothered me. Then again, none of mine have any spectacular backstories. There are even a couple I can't for the life of me remember getting.

My brother-in-law met a dude with a tattoo on his arm of Alan Thicke with a word balloon coming out of his mouth containing the phrase "FUCK OHIO". He said he got it because he loves Alan Thick and hates Ohio.

joygoat, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't mind compliments ("nice colors!") or inquiries like "where did you get that done?" But when they ask what it means and I give them a general answer ("It's a tribute to a friend") I hate it when they start pushing for details.

Ms Misery, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

My stepson was showing us his newest tattoo (he and gf got matching ones which are basically orphan annie eyes on their hands so they can do the senior wences thing, wtf?) and was saying never again, because DAMN, IT HURT! He's got a beautiful one covering his shoulder and this giant ? on his back (that he saw in a dream), so maybe they hurt more as you get older?

Jaq, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:18 (sixteen years ago) link

hands would fucking hurt like hell. (back or front?)

Ms Misery, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

> it doesn't hurt

That's not the point. It's a phobia, not a rational response. Flu injections don't hurt either, not really, but I can't even watch it on tv, I have to turn away and I clench up involuntarily anyway.

Oilyrags, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

It's like that side bit directly across from your thumb (xpost) Sort of like the side of the lowest joint on your index finger and then just past the knuckle. Then when you close your hand, your thumb is senior wences lower lip and jaw.

Jaq, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

(Oilyrags, I hear you - I walked into the grocery once and they were giving flu shots RIGHT THERE, and I collapsed)

Jaq, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I gotcha, there have been some times I wish I had needle phobia.

Bill Magill, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd never get one but I like tasteful ones on others

sleep, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

More people should have weird dada "FUCK OHIO"-style tats.

kenan, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I met a dude once with a tattoo of a redneck fucking a chicken. On his leg. Wrongest shit ever.

kenan, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Holy shit, I am imagining the fuck ohio tattoo in my mind and I love it.

Ms Misery: "It's a tribute to a friend" seems like an answer that encourages probing, so if you don't want people to press, you should probably phrase it another way!

Will M., Friday, 7 September 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

right, like, "It's none of your fucking business."

kenan, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Again-it doesn't hurt.

I think this is a little misleading - it may not hurt YOU, but there is no way on god's green earth that there is no pain involved at all for anyone.

I'll start saying something like "It's to remember all the kids I gunned down during that one massacre in junior high . I was going through a rough patch at the time."

Best comeback to nosy question ever - My students ask me if I have any kids I reply completely straight faced "Just the ones buried in my backyard." hahaha

Jesse, Saturday, 8 September 2007 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Do your students ask you about yr tats, Ms. Miz, or are they all pretty much covered by clothes? (The tats–I should hope your students are wearing clothes.)

Abbott, Saturday, 8 September 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

You should just tell people who ask about yr tats that your mom made you get them & then *shrug.*

Abbott, Saturday, 8 September 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I like that answer.

I didn't make any extra effort to cover them up. The particularly liked the big colorful one on my arm. Some would want to draw it. It was no big deal for me too have tattoos while teaching. Some of their parents I met would have cat claws on their boobs or ghetto gang tats up and down their arms.

Again I request photos of your tattoos. And I guess would like to say I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Jesse, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I want a tattoo so bad, but the only one that I've wanted long enough that I'm comfortable going through with it is going to be impossible to find.

Clarification: It's the very first picture Eadward Muybridge took that showed a horse with all four hooves off the ground in full gallop. He didn't publish the damn thing in "Animal Locomotion". It might, might, be in an issue of Field Magazine from 1875, but aside from that, I'll have to find the original glass plate (pretty much impossible) if I want it.
