k3vin k., Wednesday, 30 November 2016 23:56 (seven years ago) link

how did this guy become famous and every other jeopardy champion save ken jennings just vanished back into the ether

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:11 (seven years ago) link

he wrote thinkpieces during the great privilege bubble of 2014

Treeship, Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:19 (seven years ago) link

I guess he was right about internet trolls being a sign of deep cultural rot seeing as now one is president elect.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:25 (seven years ago) link

i still like him but i think that's largely because i'm not on twitter

Nhex, Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:49 (seven years ago) link

He sucks

Fiddle Catstro (latebloomer), Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:52 (seven years ago) link

there's.....a lot going on in that tweet

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 December 2016 02:04 (seven years ago) link

yeah that's incredibly homophobic and idiotic. i don't think it did much to diminish the rampant misogyny and sexual harassment online. sad.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 December 2016 02:49 (seven years ago) link

What are these gay porn sites that Chu is being unwittingly inflicted with?

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 December 2016 03:54 (seven years ago) link

i think he goes there willingly in order to experience what it's really like to be a woman online. brave.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:11 (seven years ago) link

at least he did more research than he seems to have done on thatcher

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:14 (seven years ago) link

i kind of miss this corny, misguided, performatively self-flagellating form of male feminism. feels like it belongs to a more innocent era.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:26 (seven years ago) link

this guy blocked me like a year and a half ago lol

Clay, Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:32 (seven years ago) link

idk i see him as pretty authentic (if def performative) and i think he fits pretty well within the current wokebro paradigm. he's not marc loi or peter daou or something (to his credit)

k3vin k., Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:34 (seven years ago) link

he would be ok as some random dude you knew who tweets but his reach is a little too far

which is that actor dude who was on orange is the new black? he's got some loi powers

mh, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 20:57 (six years ago) link

He tries to explain - but not excuse - the mindset of the nerdy guys who hate women mostly because they feel rejected by women. And he wades into the blistering Gamergate battle, taking the side of female gamers and game developers when they complained about their treatment by male gamers -- who responded, naturally, by treating them even worse, attacking and vilifying them.

Meanwhile, though, the self-involved Arthur neglects and pretty much marginalizes his own wife, Eliza, who suffers from a debilitating chronic condition but puts what energy she has into supporting Arthur's hopes and dreams. In one telling scene, she tries to talk with him about her own struggles, and her own dream (writing a sci-fi novel), while Arthur scrolls through his phone, never looking up at her.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

I feel like gamergate somehow opened the gates of hell. Everything is worse since then.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

"arthur -- who has less depth than a full-length documentary requires"

the quiet harshness of this line is awesome

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 21:44 (six years ago) link

It's fucking crazy because the GG weirdos think anyone who has an opinion on sexism or racism is only saying it to get attention, but then there's dudes like this who really did jump on because they needed a platform

Treeship, Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:49 (six years ago) link

i agree he's lame, but there are plenty of regular posters who basically seem to share his worldview

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:51 (six years ago) link

I like him, but that anecdote about him ignoring his wife is bothering me. I guess I'd have to see the clip in context, but I don't think I want to watch a doc about the guy.

i don't particularly like twitter war/culture personalities, but i still like Chu. he's generally on the right side of things even if he's clearly obnoxious and attention-seeking. but i'm definitely biased in favor of brash Asian American personalities of which there are so many ofc (kinda feel similarly conflicted about Eddie Huang)

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

yeah i liked him and was rooting for him for the same reason, but then it turned out he was bad. no shame in being wrong sometimes!

k3vin k., Friday, 23 June 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

favourite chu related content:

when he tweeted that watching gay porn gave him a taste of being objectified like women get all the time

the tweets from his ex-wife about the drudgery of cleaning up for him and cooking for him

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

i just like how the latter exist and he has the temerity to smear 'brocialists' with the same

global tetrahedron, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

there are no brocialists.

there are no sjws.

these are caricatures.

arthur chu is one of the people who believes in the reality of caricatures/twitter phantoms.

Treeship, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

did he quit his job after winning jeopardy? he posts to twitter about a thousand times a day, i can't imagine how he has time to do anything else.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

he actually makes money off being an internet celebrity/pundit which tbh i can see makes even more hatable

why u jelly

Οὖτις, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

twitter phantoms give him reason to continue existing in his current form so

global tetrahedron, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

btw clown me endlessly for my old comments here:
LONG DUK DONG

I think he went from using his newfound fame to write about things he knew, from his own perspective, to a point where he's commenting on things for the sake of keeping the ball rolling

it's easy to have a conversation with a few people, decide you've come up with some interesting take on things, and then put it in front of a different person who immediately points out you had a group consensus but it was overall a bad idea. if you're glued to twitter 24/7 you're going to think something a few hundred people were rabidly chasing down the rabbit hole for a day has great importance. but it's just an extension of the "people in a room come to a conclusion" problem

afaict most of his new material is in service to that kind of thing, or weird observations like the gay porn comment jim mentioned

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

his first columns definitely weren't bad, let alone what he seems to shit out on social media every day now

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

he has multiple-tweet personal takes on news issues, usually controversial ones, nearly every hour. I'm assuming it's in the hopes one of them catches and he gets a boost of twitter fame, or as part of workshopping what to write a column about

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link

all i know about this guy is that he doesn't know how to put on sneakers
