i don't doubt that the everyone-can-and-will-die style of storytelling can be effective - i mean i'm still watching the show and at least some of that has to do w/ a sense of 'wow what will he do next' but you can overabuse that i think - the flipside to undermining people's attachments to characters is that they become less willing to be attached in the future i think.

rubbing yr face in how terrible and futile everything is seems to be a hallmark of the golden age of serialized tv

lag∞n, Thursday, 11 June 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

The prospect of characters dying doesn't make me less attached.

I don't think any of these shows are full on miserable. There's still a lot of wish fulfilment and satisfaction to be had.
If there was like a tv version of Principles Of Lust (the most ugly, miserable and depressing film I've ever seen), I might find that hard to take.

Met a lovely, and enormous, white Alsatian a couple of days ago called Ghost. It's (elderly) owners claimed not to know anything about GoTs.

I met a man named Tyrion Lannister the other day. Quite a tall fellow.

Good to know Braavos has a modern tube service in place. Very efficient.

Finally caught up with this ep, but must admit we watched it sort of out of duty and with little pleasure. Though at the end my wife busted out singing the theme from "The Neverending Story," which I guess made it worth it.

i keep thinking stannis might die, but then i remember Melisandre. i'd guess like she'll have some sort of role to play (tee hee) during the battles/war against the white walkers, just because she's got the magic thing going on. seems like her fire witch spells + dragons + special sword materials that can destroy white walkers might what ends up saving the day at the end. and if stannis died, i can't see the army switching their loyalties to her, since she's creepy and keeps trying to sleep with people and advises leaders to burn their only children with at least some frequency.

Melisandre will invent the iphone and win the war

disrupt the white walkers

Letting Stannis die would be such a tv-version thing to do. He did what the red god asked of him. By the logic of the world he should be safe. So I'm going with everyone he fights against.

(We're so far away from the books, that I feel like I can speculate freely. #NoSpoilers)

Frederik B, Sunday, 14 June 2015 19:29 (eight years ago) link

not that far away. pretty sure the person who dies at the end of the last book will die tonight

who is it

we hate Stannis now, so he's probably safe. my guess is Arya or Sansa. Possibly Tyrion.

That comet from the beginning of season two - remember that one? - is going to come back, and smash westeros the fuck up. Winter is coming, nuclear winter.

...huh.

Who did Dany run into? They looked Dothraki.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 15 June 2015 02:05 (eight years ago) link

I'm increasingly unsure as to where this show is going and what the point of it is. Everything more or less makes sense but we might be losing too many toe holds into positive storylines.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 15 June 2015 02:17 (eight years ago) link

Also are we all caught up now in the books? I know some bit have been surpassed but we could really start a new, more or less combined thread now, can't we?

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 15 June 2015 02:27 (eight years ago) link

as I understand it there are things that never happened in the show that could still come up later, so it's tricky?

well i was gonna say they telegraphed the slow acting poison way too much but then lots of other stuff happened.
kinda terrified to go near social media for the next 24 hours.

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 June 2015 04:39 (eight years ago) link

i'll kick it off with the obvious question with as few spoilers as possible for the moment: is that last death a major deviation from the book?

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 June 2015 04:40 (eight years ago) link

Nope. The only deviation is in its finality (vaguely open in the book that character might still be alive -- in the show, per all the stories just now, character is dead dead dead.)

I think the stories are saying that because they prob don't want to commit to ambiguity

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 06:35 (eight years ago) link

well i think the point is that if it was left even somewhat open in the book, they were pretty goddamn definitive there unless they're gonna do a zombie mountain on him.
