we don't really believe stannis is dead, right? it doesn't make sense to do the cut-away just to reveal that yes, actually he did die there we just didn't feel like showing it

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:25 (eight years ago) link

xpost I'm kidding. It's not actually a spoiler anymore, but book readers have apparently being speculating for 10 years about who actually wrote a letter supposedly from Ramsey that Jon received right before he died. It said something like "My army has destroyed Stannis' army. I demand you hand over the lady Melissandre. Also my wife and my Reek are missing, give them back to me." After last night it seems likely that Ramsey actually sent it.

stannis is dead. haven't you seen enough gore?

are we allowed to speculate openly about Jon now? I'm curious if in addition to wolves he might have other...affinities...that only one other character has shown.

ryan, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:26 (eight years ago) link

maybe he'll come back next season as the dreaded Ser Stoneheart

i hope Davos sticks around, i like him. maybe there will be more adventures w/him and melisandre, havent had one of those since the renly takedown in s2.

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

also re stannis, why'd they rush out to confirm that kit isn't going to be in the next season, that jon is 100% for sure dead, and then not discuss stannis. i'm telling u it's very suspicious he is still alive i believe stannis 4eva.

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:33 (eight years ago) link

After learning a few more spoilers today (nothing massive but I probably shouldn't have read Arya's wiki entry) I realise it really isn't safe for me even though I already knew some other bigger spoilers that haven't been on the tv show.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:33 (eight years ago) link

he gets sent elsewhere in the books and gets "entrusted" with another mission. pretty sure Davos will return next season.

xxp - do you think that at the moment Brienne is gonna kill stannis, sansa and theon appear and disrupt the execution?

are we up to speed now w/the books?

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

no but i think brienne is not exactly trustworthy to carry out a cold-blooded execution

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

They should have somehow engineered it so that Sansa and Theon land on her as she's about to land the final blow.

Rouge Trooper (dowd), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

i do wonder about the possibility of characters being brought back because that whole deal in season 3 w/beric and his crew would be a really, really odd side story to not bring back. i assume in the books it was used as a tablesetter for lady stoneheart?

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:39 (eight years ago) link

an odd story to not revisit, i should say

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

still don't get why anyone would think Renly had a right to be king

bc he was kind to them and they were an ugly duckling

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

because everyone hates Stannis basically

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link

he does have the exasperated look of a sitcom patriarch

Book SPOILER: Most of book four especially takes place in the Riverlands, in the region most harmed by the War of Kings, and while Beric and crew doesn't play a big role, they loom heavily over the proceedings. Show has removed all those stories, thereby also removing the most potent thematic layer in the whole series, kinda.

The disappointment of saving a daughter for years waiting for the perfect moment, only for it to be a waste.

cersei's new golden guy going to have some good storylines, I know it.

i think the mountain zombie does indicate that Jon Snow might also return from the dead

and then they can fight

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link

why is mountainstein any evidence? You're already got the lord of light extra lives cheat code. No need to look beyond that.

Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 20:07 (eight years ago) link

Also Jon may have a cousin who burned herself up and came back with dragons

I'll accept Jon Snow coming back to 'life' only if it is as a wight

next season should just be all the dead characters wandering around in purgatory

"oh, you're dead too?"
'well, I might be reincarnated as a wolf, not sure yet"

It was honestly really weird that they didn't show Stannis dying, not least since they showed his moral downfall in such detail.

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link

Ok I can buy that Stannis telling Brienne to "Do you duty" reminded her of her duty to protect Sansa. And that she decides to keep Stannis alive to trade him for Sansa.

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:56 (eight years ago) link

peggy killed stannis.

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:56 (eight years ago) link

Or, they just decided to choose the POV angle for his death blow? Is that so ridiculous? Why all the denial?

Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

Stannis sent off to recuperate with The Hound and Benjen Stark and Catelyn's uncle and gendry. Can't wait for that B-team to step up in season 8.

bc in genre fiction if you don't see the person die you better believe they're still alive

MAYBE THIS *IS* WHAT WE ARE WATCHING!

nb it could very well be that this is another one of GOT's genre defying moments just to screw with the audience, but any genre savvy watcher/reader is going to skeptical of a death that isn't shown

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i guess i could break down exactly why stannis dying here is different than robert dying in season one (i can think of like four reasons off the top of my head) but if you don't get the feeling that the quick camera break away was concealing some narrative trickery than i'm probably not going to convince you

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:05 (eight years ago) link

Didn't King Robert have a funeral with the body there?
