I did appreciate how they added the reminder of how bad he was first. Because without those extra two minutes of the known child raper beating little girls with a stick I would have been all, jeez, Arya, chill out a little with the eye-gouging.

It was pretty good. For a minute I thought the other girl who works for many faced God was there and she would kill him.
On the other hand I don't know why Arya revealed her identity after he had been stabbed so many times. It didn't seem like a person in that condition could understand anything being said.

magic is p much by definition unexplained. idk what concept of magic as a distinct force anyone in this world cld have given they clearly have no recognisable conception of science (or mb any convincing explanation of the cosmos). how/why wld they differentiate certain animals as magic or w/e

I think she needs the ritual to make her murders OK -- we saw a similar thing when she killed Polliver(?) by repeating what he said about Lommy -- so that it was as much for her own sake as it was to agonize Trant.

Didn't GRRM say that Arya was his wife's favorite character, meaning that there's no way she's going to die any time soon?

There is an established system of science (Maesters/Old Town), it just happens to be at odds with most notions of magic. I presume it will be quite a significant theme in Sam's story going forward.

Yeah I think most exposition on that front began and ended with Pycelle (treating Robert/John Arryn. Boasting about his role in the birth of Cersei's children. Aemon was too old to get up to much

Medieval scholasticism is definitely the model he uses but the role of maesters is supposed to be far more practical than that would suggest.

They really didn't seem so to me at the time and I wasn't going to go back and read all that shit again, so I just assumed they were and I'd skimmed it.

re: Sand Snakes GRRM was going for a sexy Deadly Vipers Assassination Squad only with 8 ladies, and so yes, that aspect got people excited.

Correctly but in very vague terms.

it makes sense if they're more like functionaries or mandarins. for a show about power there's v little sense of the political landscape. there's feudalism with no real sense of class, kings with no talk of divine right/mandate of heaven (stannis's awareness of his destiny feels v personal). idk who is supposed to be actually at work enacting their small council biz & running a credit-based economy but w/e. varys is obv the best but it just feels like grrm was feeling the idea of some eunuch official archetype but rather than being a member of whole caste he just makes him a guy with a crazy back story he could write later

I thought danaerys was very rude to her dragon, too. He'd been stabbed with loads of spears, rescued her, and she says 'you could at leat find some food' or something. Also, if I was trying to find out where she went it might be worth releasing the other two and following them - I imagine dragons leave a great destruction/word of mouth trail.

On one of the Grantland podcasts they point out how Sam's quest will likely be less Harvard and the Sorbonne and more University of Phoenix and study abroad, since there's not enough story/book/show left to allow him to go off and become a full-on Maester. They suggest he's just doing an independent study with a focus on killing White Walkers.
