the nod to "go deep" in the title can't be unintentional, right?

i'd imagine not

I saw J. Cole and Jeremih available in a two-for-one package at Target the other day.

no sleep is pretty insipid. the come-ons in the lyrics sound completely tired and workwoman-like. why is anyone excited about this? and i used to be a massive janet fan.

StillAdvance, Friday, 24 July 2015 15:53 (eight years ago) link

You have heard the stuff that made you a "used to be" fan right? That "No Sleeep" isn't 20 Y.O. is cause for celebration.

Also, it's chill af.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 24 July 2015 16:05 (eight years ago) link

yeah the fact that it's kind of pleasant and unassuming and maybe, if we're being generous, more in line with her '90s midtempo stuff, is pretty reassuring just because she was really flailing around stylistically with those last few albums. curious to see what the rest of the record sounds like and if this is just a buzz single for something else soon to come.

I love it -- exactly what I wanted. She and Jam-Lewis are settling into the comeback instead of jumping someone else's train.

it like legitimately gets better every time i listen to it

I love that sample in the bridge.

okay, i am fairly certain i never listened to 2008's "Discipline" and I did not know it existed.
anyone have anything good to say about it?

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 26 July 2015 00:44 (eight years ago) link

"Rock With U" is stellar but it's all I know from that album

Y Kant Max Read (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 26 July 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link

I remember liking "Feedback."

jaymc, Sunday, 26 July 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

I liked "Feedback" fine.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 26 July 2015 21:56 (eight years ago) link

i like a lot of songs on discipline lol

"Feedback" was pretty hot. Her best post-A4U single.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 July 2015 01:17 (eight years ago) link

gonna disagree bc "all nite (don't stop)" and "rock with u" were singles

great songs on discipline:

rock with u
feedback
title track
curtains
luv
can't b good

The first half of Discipline has some good stuff, but the back half is kind of a chore to get through.

Greer, Thursday, 30 July 2015 02:04 (eight years ago) link

revisiting 20 yo for the first time in forever and i extremely rep for "daybreak"/"enjoy"

For some reason I'd remembered "All Nite" as an All For You single. Still, I think I prefer "Feedback."

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 July 2015 02:44 (eight years ago) link

essentially 20 yo gets alarmingly great when dupri recedes

if i were more drunk i'd argue that "take care" is her best ballad and then i'd yell at myself for putting anything over "come back to me"

one month passes...

hello, i just thought i'd post here bc i don't think i have. i love this song. it's a very happy song for me. especially because i've not been sleeping much so it feels like i have a companion in the world.

oh no wait i did post here. well. it's still fucked up.

Janet Jackson has detailed Unbreakable, her first new album since 2008's Discipline. It's out October 2 via Rhythm Nation/BMG, and features the singles "No Sleeep" (feat. J. Cole) and "The Great Forever", as well as a Missy Elliott collab called "Burnitup!" That's the artwork above; scroll down for the tracklist.

According to a press release, the album's themes include "Janet’s views on where we stand today as individuals and as the inter-related elements of a planet. Some of these relate to her convictions passionately expressed in Rhythm Nation 1814, including the need to bring things out in the open and to have a dialogue. The album also will mark the first time Janet Jackson has opened up about her brother Michael and with reflections concerning her youth."

The record continues Jackson's collaboration with producer-songwriter team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Speaking about the project, the pair said:

It’s wonderful to be creating again with Janet. From songwriting, producing, arranging, singing, dancing, acting, she deftly does it all and truly personifies the word artist. Unbreakable is a gift to all of her fans who have steadfastly stood by her. It is a subject for conversation, a plea for compassion, and a call for action from someone who’s come a long way, but’s got a long way to go, and has much to say about it. In other words, if you want to know what’s on her mind you only have to listen.

Unbreakable:
01 Unbreakable
02 Burnitup! (Feat. Missy Elliott)
03 Dammn Baby
04 The Great Forever
05 Shoulda Known Better
06 After You Fall
07 Broken Hearts Heal
08 Night
09 No Sleeep (Feat. J Cole)
10 Dream Maker/ Euphoria
11 2 B Loved
12 Take Me Away
13 Promise
14 Lessons Learned
15 Black Eagle
16 Well Traveled
17 Gon B Alright

and likely #1 next week

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 8 October 2015 14:48 (eight years ago) link

I think that right up until the penultimate song this is a great album. I don't think it is as good as the run from Control through The Velvet Rope. I will be featuring it in heavy rotation for the rest of the year.

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Thursday, 8 October 2015 14:53 (eight years ago) link

Upthread I said there's no shame at all that Janet (or anyone else) will never match Control > RN1814 > janet. > Velvet Rope

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 8 October 2015 14:55 (eight years ago) link

yeah that's an insane way to judge any artist including janet

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 October 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

"best since (but by no means as good as) the Velvet Rope" is her "best since Blood On The Tracks"

some dude, Thursday, 8 October 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

That list of Janet's laughs way upthread needs to be updated to include the one from "Broken Hearts Heal." A happier sound than any laugh since "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite."

three weeks pass...

Fun show in Minneapolis last night. Jam & Lewis were there, and the mayor declared it Janet Jackson Day. I would've liked to hear more of the new songs, but the only real disappointment was when the pre-show DJ played (apparently by accident) a few seconds of Jazmine Sullivan's "Let it Burn," then cut it short. It might've slowed the energy a bit but I was so itching to hear it.

Ys Man a.k.a. Have One on G (geoffreyess), Monday, 2 November 2015 16:44 (eight years ago) link

Bonus: Janet lip-syncing Kendrick as bits of "Poetic Justice" led into "Any Time Any Place."

No word on whether Jackson, 49, and her husband, 41-year-old Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana, are looking to build their family the old-fashioned way or through other means.

Had no idea she had remarried, let alone to a Qatari billionaire.
