my ballot would have included a bunch of tracks from load/reload it's true

, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 12:15 (eight years ago) link

the memory remains is a very touching song imo

, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 12:16 (eight years ago) link

the fixxxer is great, unforgiven ii is almost better than the first one

, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 12:16 (eight years ago) link

otm

i am not gonna see "the outlaw torn" in this countdown and i legitimately think it's the best metallica song

at least i got "junior dad"

to me, unforgiven II is not only much much better than the first, but my favorite song by the band…it's like JH had matured in 98 to a point in which he could feel what he's talking about, whereas on the black album, he still too insecure that, I dunno, the guys in Metal Church might laugh at his pussy ballads. I didn't vote, but this would have been #1 if I did.

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson)

Never sure to what extent Lulu supporters are trolling; it just sounds flat-out horrible to me.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 12:59 (eight years ago) link

I have never trolled! also "junior dad" is legit gorgeous

Yeah sorry to cast aspersions, I'm sure it has its genuine fans. I just do not get it at all.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:12 (eight years ago) link

metallica wrote some of their most inspired riffs in years just for lou reed to yell poetry over them. jeez of course i love it

"Junior Dad" is not my favorite Lulu song and it's one that i think benefits from the context of the whole album, but i voted for multiple tracks from it and gave "Junior Dad" a vote because i knew it had the best chance of placing.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:30 (eight years ago) link

when Howard Stern goofed on the "I am a table" tune, I laffed uncontrollably for several minutes…

veronica moser, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:36 (eight years ago) link

think i voted for every song off lulu except for "little dog" and "the view"

You guys this was the first Metallica song I ever heard and so I always (rightly or WRONGLY) think of them as an environmental band, like Nuclear Assault or something.

how's life, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:04 (eight years ago) link

Actually, I don't really know if that's totally wrong, but I have my suspicions. Anyway, I fucking love this song.

Q: You played at Live Earth. What are your thoughts on the climate crisis. What can METALLICA contribute to [the whole process]?

Hetfield: "I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn't quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don't like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don't wanna cloud it with 'Democrat, Republican,' whatever. Our philosophy is 'think for yourself' at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it's man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."

And I mean, I agree with that to an extent. There's a lot of room in our future for the development of geoengineering technologies, but it's such a weak dodge to not acknowledge that there's a crisis and instead lump it all in with "politics".

how's life, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

Would welcome further evidence that Metallica are indeed some kind of righteous eco-warriors.

how's life, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:12 (eight years ago) link

If that's the worst thing we're going to hear from Hetfield today, I'd say we're doing pretty good.

Quite possible Hetfield thought they were supporting the wrestlers though.

Anyway, Blackened is obviously fantastic (as I expect to be able to say about every song in the top ten). They never before or since did anything with the foreboding intensity of the doomy middle eight. Still gives me shivers sometimes.

xpost Yeah, I'd just as soon Hetfield not talk politics, too. Go kill a bear in Russian or something, dude.

The 'Fear of living on' part is one of the best melodies Hetfield wrote, actually really pretty.

pplains, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:25 (eight years ago) link

"Don't tread on me" (safe to say that's not gonna make it into the top ten), a pro-Gulf war tune, was probly where JH's authentic sympathies came to light, after standard anti-reagan, military etc. cant. he talked about it haltingly as such when I spoke to him…claimed it concerned war for independence and nothing else…uh huh, sure.

veronica moser, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:34 (eight years ago) link

'Blackened' is so killing.

When I was 14 I wore out my tape of RtL by constantly re-cueing the build to that epic breakdown at 2.36.

is this wishful thinking, or did someone once make an ambient Metallica mix of all their pretty classical intros and baroque breakdowns?

lil urbane (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:14 (eight years ago) link

i voted for "ride the lightning"!

think it's one of their catchiest choruses and one of their most uncannily structured songs
