In 1984, the French record label Bernett Records misprinted the color of the album cover in green, rather than blue, and 400 copies with the green cover were pressed. Because of their rarity, this misprint caused these green albums to become collectors' items.[12]

(more support for their eco-message? one may hope...)

Should've had a dagger coming up through the electric chair too.

Good analysis of the intro from here:

For me, the biggest decision in “Ride the Lightning” comes in the intro. The first riff is a 12-second fanfare: “Here we are!” It has minor key harmonies with a strong classical flavor. So it sets the expectation of more melody to follow – and a lesser band would have delivered on that. But Metallica don’t. They kick aside melodicism and ram a tritone riff down your throat: two deadly, dissonant notes. It’s like entering a room while wearing a tailored suit, then braining everyone in sight with a hammer.

i've never really gotten fade to black esp as suicide anthem

, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:47 (eight years ago) link

when i think about it for some reason 'nothing else matters is better' pops into my head

, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:48 (eight years ago) link

Never been one of my favorites. Yeah, there's the whole suicide anthem. Someone played an acoustic cover at a friend's funeral in high school. That made it feel a little overbearing for me from there on out. I like it pretty well once the tempo kicks up, but it didn't make my list.

― 龜,

Don't know where to start with this. FtB has a way prettier riff first off.

"Blackened" for that backwards-masked intro that almost reaches the heights of "Battery"'s intro. COLOR OUR WORLD BLACKENED.

BLACKENED.

"Battery" for that INTRO. It was nicked from a Judas Priest song, though, no? I was the #1 vote.

Surprised how much I dug "RTL" this time around! Snuck into my top 10.

F2B missing the top 5! :O

Are we allowed to speculate on the top 5?

:wq (Leee), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

So how many of us know anyone who was sent to the counselor's office after they transcribed the lyrics to "Fade to Black" during study hall? I know two.

oof, how tacky

I'm not big on poll speculation because you all will start going WHERE'S MASTER? WHERE'S ONE? while I'll want to discuss the subtle nuances of "Dirty Window" next.

But no rules here. Speculate away, if you wanna.

Ride the Lightning was my #1 -- that opening riff melts my face

I see. Now I will just say goodbye to speculation. xp

since i highly doubt 'Shortest Straw' will be in the top 5 (although it should be), i'm just going to post this now:

xps:

Funny thing about Blackened and Battery's intros. Masterand Justice were the first Metallica albums I bought. Got them on the same day, when I was 10 or 11. I had only heard One and someone covering the bass breakdown from Orion. That's all I knew. I think I actually plugged Master into the deck first. And it fooled me! I was crestfallen. "Oh no, what is this - classical? This tape was printed with the wrong music on it. I'll have to get mom to take me back to the mall..." and then the thrash kicked in. I kid you not that the same thing happened to me an hour later when I played Justice. "What? What is this some kind of new age crap? Oh, ok. Here we go."

YAH! You know in Super Mario those big crushy enemies? The way the intro stomps always reminds me of them in the best way.

didn't vote for it

Didn't "Orion" win the radio button MOP poll? It was going to contend for my #1 (ended up #2), though when I first heard it, I hated it for that soft bass solo section, which is now my favorite thing.

that soft bass interlude is one of the few things i can still remember how to play on bass (from when i was downloading tablature for hot riffs via dial-up).

:wq (Leee), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

When I was a kid, there was this sports talk host on the radio who'd have Metallica playing in the background on Friday nights during his show, and "One" was a staple. For young me, listening to this spooky moody song in the dark was an otherworldly, invigorating atmosphere.

:wq (Leee), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 18:15 (eight years ago) link

That said, I hope the one (pun!) from MOP beats the one from RTL for #1.

Man that video freaked me out when we saw the world premiere.

pplains, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 18:17 (eight years ago) link

I even used to have a cassette I recorded off of the television, so I could have a version with "What is democracy?" dropped in here and there.

I had the "two of one" cassette. Don't remember much about it, but sometimes when the moon is right, Lars' "...and Jason Robards as, uh, the dad" cycles on repeat through my head.
