I didn't say I agreed with the case, I just said he made an actual case. I guess I didn't realize Scorsese was so untouchable that you couldn't compare other filmmakers to him in one paragraph in a standard-issue review.

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:51 (eight years ago) link

Also, it's one paragraph, not an article. And the paragraph basically says that he's not as a good as Scorsese.

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:53 (eight years ago) link

you said it was credible

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:53 (eight years ago) link

he also implies that he's not as good as Scorsese because of racism

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:53 (eight years ago) link

One paragraph saying he's a Scorsese cognate is more credible than your post saying there's a whole article calling him the 21st century Scorsese

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:56 (eight years ago) link

I'm not very credible, I admit

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:57 (eight years ago) link

but you're right, the article with the dumb challop doesn't put it in the headline

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 July 2015 22:59 (eight years ago) link

Honestly I'm totally neutral on Fuqua, I'm just saying that when I actually read the article all I found was one paragraph making some standard comparisons between directors saying that black filmmakers maybe aren't given the opportunity to develop to their full capacity in hollywood

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 23:00 (eight years ago) link

"And saying" i mean. Sorry about the typo

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 23:01 (eight years ago) link

I meant credible as in "possible to believe," not "definitely true." Maybe that was misuse on my part, though.

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 23:04 (eight years ago) link

I guess I probably don't revert Scorsese enough, because that seemed like "filmmaker is similar to other filmmaker," not really a challop

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 23:06 (eight years ago) link

Revere, not revert

intheblanks, Friday, 24 July 2015 23:07 (eight years ago) link

but they're not similar. It's really silly.

Tony Scott would be a reasonable comparison.

this is the article that broke the camel's back for me: http://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/

half-hearted indignation for the sake of it

Not only that, but many of the popular songs from bygone days would be considered sexist today, including "Poetry in Motion", which was a number one hit in late 1960. There isn't a thing suggestive in this; a young man likens the love of his life to poetry. But the politically correct crowd would probably make sure, even so, that it wouldn't get much if any airplay in these times. A classic example of how political correctness has gotten out of hand.

Seinfeld deals with the issue of interracial dating without having any of the characters date an actual person of color.

Yes, that's the joke.

Aside from being a super awkward episode, it insinuates that you can’t be racist if you can prove you have one black friend.

Yes, that's the joke.

In this episode Seinfeld fetishizes Asian women without having any Asian women actually in the show.

Yes, that's the joke.

it is problematic because it reinforces the idea that identifying as gay is a phase that can be rectified with the right heterosexual.

Yes, that's the joke.

there is a certain kind of seinfeld fan who finds in the characters' selfish and amoral behavior an excuse for their own carelessness. it seems like seinfeld is pretty much just like these fans with his "pc police" rhetoric which is disappointing. however, none of this is really an issue with the show itself. human callousness is a fine subject for comedy, and depicting something is not the same as endorsing it. (duh) also of course these characters are "blind to their privilege" they are petty selfish schemers, that is the whole point!

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

the episodes with racial stereotypes aren't cool though

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 16:54 (eight years ago) link

and yeah, rm/rm otm that in most of this writers' examples the show is satirizing the attitudes he or she is accusing it of holding

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

I feel like maybe the writer of that inane piece could've had a tiny amount of smoke if curb was the subject, because the excruciating cringe-comedy tone of curb makes it hard to know what's being laughed at, but in seinfeld it's p obvious that the attitudes of these characters are ridiculous and often bad, and the joke is def never on the subjects of jerry/george/elaine/kramer's dumb ways of thinking

extremely lag∞n postings voice (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:04 (eight years ago) link

and I don't even really think curb is at all ~problematic~ just harder to laugh at because it's so painful.

Seinfeld the show is totes racist tho

D-4(y)0 (wins), Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:08 (eight years ago) link

I didn't read the thing but I saw the show it's well racist

D-4(y)0 (wins), Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:08 (eight years ago) link

that fuqua piece is even dumber. the only movie of his that's even superficially similar to scorsese is brooklyn's finest. which, incidentally, is not a good movie, but has an amazing conversation between ethan hawke and vincent d'onofrio

also shooter is good stuff for what it is but training day is the best fuqua movie!

Curb at its best is far more brilliant than Seinfeld. I kind of wonder what the point is, if any, of having Larry always being accused of being racist for slight faux pas. Does he think the world is "too sensitive"? Or is it more that ppl today confuse social idiocy and cluelessness for bigotry when really they're different? Either way, someone could reasonably object to that aspect of the show I guess, although I do think the general premise of Larry always accidentally offending people to the point where they are whipped into a vicious frenzy is funny. Like the worst nightmare of those people who complain about oversensitivity while hidden safely behind an anonymous screenname on a comments section

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:15 (eight years ago) link

Curb your enthusiasm is even more racist than Seinfeld iirc

D-4(y)0 (wins), Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:18 (eight years ago) link

Well it mines the loosely autobiographical character's latent racism to ambivalent ends/painful laughs

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

Yeah maybe it's less racist than Seinfeld I'm having trouble calling any cye episodes to mind tbh

D-4(y)0 (wins), Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:27 (eight years ago) link

There's one where Larry adopts a german shephard named sarge and it always barks and growls at black people leading wanda sykes to tell him he got a "racist dog" and then accusing him of training it to be racist

Treeship, Saturday, 25 July 2015 17:30 (eight years ago) link

sure and the black characters basically only exist to be involved in this kind of hilarious misunderstanding but istr there being proper Seinfeld-esque racism too

Oh good:

According to sources, he discouraged staffers from writing about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and the 2016 election, saying there were too many “anti-Trump” articles on the site. Hoffner has also established a partnership with Carrie Sheffield, a conservative commentator who runs the website Bold, which is described as a right-leaning news and commentary site "centered on personal responsibility and conscious capitalism."

conscious capitalism? is that a code word for expecting everyone engaged in the economy to seek out and learn every obscure detail of every business they deal with, every product they buy, so they can make "conscious" decisions about spending and investing? bcz that's balls.
