It's like a Muppet movie where Kermit is playing a fictionalized version of himself.

loved The Comedy, stoked for this

And a fictionaliyed version of Jim Henson at the same time, yes. x-post

one month passes...

caught his live show yesterday and it was probably the hardest I've laughed at a stand-up gig. was a little worried about seeing him with an audience who all knew the deal but his jokes have become a lot better (yet still incredibly hacky).

Entertainment is pretty intense/grim. It's sort of like Shakes the Clown as far as a bleak exhumations of the dark void at the center of comedy go. Granted it is not as funny as Shakes the Clown - it's also a lot slower, more artfully made, and more oblique. It's basically one long dreamlike road-trip interspersed with cameos and occasional bits of Neil onstage, with an emphasis on unrelenting alienation. Has a great ending at least.

a sympathetic Neil/Gregg hybrid with elements of both

this is otm, aside from the sympathetic part

it should really have its own separate thread

the S6 intro where Gregg hosts is so funny. if you look carefully you can see Tim's head peeking out at the bottom.

^^^yeah this

after an uproarious, curiously touching and extremely Gene -Simmons-focused set, the man himself hotfooted it upstairs to the merch stand inside about twenty seconds, shrugged off character and proceeded to meet and greet his fans (including us) in an exceptionally generous and pleasant spirit. so not only the funniest man in showbiz but genuinely one of the nicest too

imago, Monday, 17 June 2019 22:11 (four years ago) link

shrugged off character

was he still in Hamburger drag, just talking like shy, genial Gregg?

In my head he is the world’s biggest celebrity.

I can’t wait to exchange Johnny Depp trivia with him in a couple of weeks. Hoping for some VFA memorabilia.

This should probably be cross-posted on this thread, I think both the Neil Hamburger & Zip Code Rapists projects start concurrently (summer of '91?):

Zip Code Rapists

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 17 June 2019 23:11 (four years ago) link

maybe? Hamburger seems a little later to me though. For some reason I have a clear memory of the afternoon I heard both this and this at a friend's house in LA

Οὖτις, Monday, 17 June 2019 23:16 (four years ago) link

my first awareness of the Zip Code Rapists was around the same time in '96, courtesy of a mention (and maybe an interview?) in the zine "2600"

Οὖτις, Monday, 17 June 2019 23:17 (four years ago) link

that is the second-greatest LJ photo ever posted on ILX

Hamburger seems a little later to me though.

the prank phone call record was 1992, then he did the fake bad comedian records for years before actually doing the character live (and it didn't become his main project until he moved back to Australia and was adopted as pet opening act* for Frenzal Rhomb)

*note Ray Ahn from the Hard-Ons giggling in the wings at 2:35

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 17 June 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

oh apparently he never did the character live until then

eventually I did a show with them at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney at one of these big rock festivals. It was like 50,000 people, at this giant stadium in the middle of the day, booing me.

my favorite neil hamburger moment was when i walked into a local bar and he was quietly serving drinks, absolutely in character and w/the usual outfit etc but not saying anything. just morosely working. there were maybe a dozen people in the place.

omar little, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 00:07 (four years ago) link

:D

sounds like the Entertainment version of Neil

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Tuesday, 18 June 2019 00:23 (four years ago) link

three years pass...

there's a record store in Green Bay that went out of business and discounted all their inventory. the only interesting thing left was a copy of Still Dwelling. so now I'm sitting down listening to this and am actually really amazed at what an acute and carefully done parody this thing is. I think it might actually be way better than every single album in this very narrow genre. and because it's so good it's actually very funny. the only joke is his voice. but it's a really great joke.

frogbs, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 03:18 (one year ago) link

I mean you really haven't lived until you've heard Neil Hamburger warble out "Standing on the Corner"

frogbs, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 03:22 (one year ago) link

my wife's review: "that was nice! but they need a new singer!!" (she does not know who Neil Hamburger is)
