Are you hoping off because you won't have the time or for some other reason, soyrev?
Checking it out now!

Korea has banned ilxor, I'm afraid. It's deemed damaging to the moral sensibilities of the nation's youth and possibly related to NK spying.
Quickly glancing at the text I'm happy to read more about the Japanese connection - love so many bits and pieces of retro JP pop, know so little about it. Will read.

Really?? That seems kinda... unnecessary... unless the idea is to protect native Korean music discovery portals.
That was a really enjoyable history lesson, soyrev. I think "Ressurection" has something to it outside of the narrative and if koganbot was still around he might have something to say about the connection with Eastern European popular music, which is still true for lots of Kpop songs today. Also I think we must be around the same age.

They look jpop but they don't really sound it. For countries so close, and considering the many things Korean culture has inherited from Japan, it's weird to me I can't find a single example of a k-pop group doing the Japanese royal road chord progression or the J-pop chords in general.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 19 September 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link
Oh really? The vocals sounded kinda Jpop to me... that kind of vocal proccessing... but I don't know that much about Jpop chord progressions. What's an example?
― hurricane weather (forapper), Saturday, 19 September 2015 15:47 (eight years ago) link
AKB and other traditional idol songs. You'll find JP variants of the '4 chords, every pop song' youtubes we saw in the west, with the most common JP chord progressions. Like this: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4947752
The melody is instantly recognisable as Japanese in songs like this:

my friend got me this book as a gift and i've been reading it recently. really insightful stuff.there's this one short anecdote from the author where he states that while doing research on k-pop in 2009, a lot of korean fans were unaware of the term 'k-pop'. and it has to, at least partially, do with how the term 'pop' was (is?) so immediately associated with western pop. so instead, they would use the word kayo/gayo (like in inkigayo).

OK, maybe a PhD, instead of a Master's.

Just a quick note to say that though I've given up on keeping up with the tidal wave of new K-Pop releases this year, that doesn't mean you should! The ILX Rolling K-Pop 2015 playlist is open to ongoing contributions by anyone posting in the thread. I'll likely fold these tracks into the complete 2015 ILX Listening List, so I'd be much obliged if you keep an eye out for the unmissable tracks that should be part of a round up and add them to the following playlist:
ILX's Rolling K-Pop 2015 Thread Spotify Playlist
It's currently at 37 tracks, 2+ hours of music.

I have a playlist for June - present too actually, just haven't had time to sequence it yet.
(Cause even though it's nearly everything thrown together in one place, you also want it to work as a playlist you can listen to in its own right, you know?)

Anyway... Got7 sounding really good on their latest:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0iPB_JyS5g
This is like Big Bang levels of re-recording the vocals until they are perfect
― hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 01:44 (eight years ago) link
Album is pretty good:
Put 'Em Up - a JYP song, not as good as 2pm's Hands Up but GOT7 have a slight edge over 2PM as vocalists
Feels Good - very "expensive sounding" (as the Biebs would say), not sure the pop melodies match the production but man the beat is so lush
Good - Yr standard sped-up electric-guitar-strummed Kpop song with a whistle hook (sounds like a girl-group song actually)
I Keep Looking - Oh this is really nice, sounds kind of like EXO, but weird experimental EXO, keeps swinging back and forth between hip hop and rnb, just a tad too fast and always a bit off-kilter.. I really like this one
Tic Tic Toc - More menacing 80s breathy vocalizations, cause when they were cute it didn't sell OFC. I like the beat though.

They remind me... of Alphabat, actually. Only a couple talented ones but solid material and good production values. The guys in iKon really lucked into this group. "My Type" turns out to be one of the better songs on the halfalbum too. BI's not GD but I understand the comparison, as a composer he has a really good ear for melody (or is a good thief, but that would be GD-like too). I like that they don't sound like any other rookies at the moment (except maybe Winner, oops) Too bad they still don't have nice vocal tones.

Taeyeon going all Younha with her new single
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:07 (eight years ago) link
Listening now but not surprised... didn't she cry when SNSD got "Gee" because she hated it so much? Isn't she on record as *only* liking TTS' singles out of all of the SNSD discography? I always figured she'd go rock or singer-songwriter or some other 'authentic' direction with her solo.
Man but she really does sound great on "I".
― hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:00 (eight years ago) link
On "U R" too!
I don't think I appreciated Taeyeon enough as a vocalist before this.
― hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:01 (eight years ago) link
Hmm not feeling the upbeat songs on the album as much, and she's got a bit of that overtrained musical singer feel going, but closer "Farewell" is a nice vocal showcase too, though a boring song.
Don't think I'll ever listen to the album again but it's probably accomplished what it was meant to accomplish.
― hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:05 (eight years ago) link
Album is meh, single is pretty decent and probably a very smart direction for her, although it's not as good as Younha or similar k-indie artists.
IU dating. As expected goes with a rocker artiste type. At least her letter to fans finally lets me know she's shooting an MV and close to album release.

Not the Infinity Challenge festival contestant I was expecting, but still a cute (power) couple :D
EVol are officially disbanded, by the way :( Or at least, only Jucy and Say still have contracts with their Ent company. Topp Dogg lost Kidoh and Gohn too.

Speaking of Topp Dogg... their latest single seems like it's actually gonna be good???

Not sure if their new company is gonna upload the whole thing or what - maybe they want to see if people will pay for it, for once - but a minute and a half is plenty long to judge.
