Just a quick note to say that though I've given up on keeping up with the tidal wave of new K-Pop releases this year, that doesn't mean you should! The ILX Rolling K-Pop 2015 playlist is open to ongoing contributions by anyone posting in the thread. I'll likely fold these tracks into the complete 2015 ILX Listening List, so I'd be much obliged if you keep an eye out for the unmissable tracks that should be part of a round up and add them to the following playlist:

ILX's Rolling K-Pop 2015 Thread Spotify Playlist

It's currently at 37 tracks, 2+ hours of music.

lol I was keeping a ytube playlist for a while, but I got lazy

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 01:10 (eight years ago) link

But here's what I have for Jan-May (ish):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrPgCUM0l1Y&index=1&list=PLsh4Z5FNfPMBl9mgoSZewSdBiG3ZRS_d4

I have a playlist for June - present too actually, just haven't had time to sequence it yet.

(Cause even though it's nearly everything thrown together in one place, you also want it to work as a playlist you can listen to in its own right, you know?)

Didn't mean to embed that, sorry guys >__>

Anyway... Got7 sounding really good on their latest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0iPB_JyS5g

This is like Big Bang levels of re-recording the vocals until they are perfect

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 01:44 (eight years ago) link

Album is pretty good:

Put 'Em Up - a JYP song, not as good as 2pm's Hands Up but GOT7 have a slight edge over 2PM as vocalists

Feels Good - very "expensive sounding" (as the Biebs would say), not sure the pop melodies match the production but man the beat is so lush

Good - Yr standard sped-up electric-guitar-strummed Kpop song with a whistle hook (sounds like a girl-group song actually)

I Keep Looking - Oh this is really nice, sounds kind of like EXO, but weird experimental EXO, keeps swinging back and forth between hip hop and rnb, just a tad too fast and always a bit off-kilter.. I really like this one

Tic Tic Toc - More menacing 80s breathy vocalizations, cause when they were cute it didn't sell OFC. I like the beat though.

They remind me... of Alphabat, actually. Only a couple talented ones but solid material and good production values. The guys in iKon really lucked into this group. "My Type" turns out to be one of the better songs on the halfalbum too. BI's not GD but I understand the comparison, as a composer he has a really good ear for melody (or is a good thief, but that would be GD-like too). I like that they don't sound like any other rookies at the moment (except maybe Winner, oops) Too bad they still don't have nice vocal tones.

Taeyeon going all Younha with her new single

abcfsk, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:07 (eight years ago) link

Listening now but not surprised... didn't she cry when SNSD got "Gee" because she hated it so much? Isn't she on record as *only* liking TTS' singles out of all of the SNSD discography? I always figured she'd go rock or singer-songwriter or some other 'authentic' direction with her solo.

Man but she really does sound great on "I".

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:00 (eight years ago) link

On "U R" too!

I don't think I appreciated Taeyeon enough as a vocalist before this.

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:01 (eight years ago) link

Hmm not feeling the upbeat songs on the album as much, and she's got a bit of that overtrained musical singer feel going, but closer "Farewell" is a nice vocal showcase too, though a boring song.

Don't think I'll ever listen to the album again but it's probably accomplished what it was meant to accomplish.

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:05 (eight years ago) link

Album is meh, single is pretty decent and probably a very smart direction for her, although it's not as good as Younha or similar k-indie artists.

IU dating. As expected goes with a rocker artiste type. At least her letter to fans finally lets me know she's shooting an MV and close to album release.

abcfsk, Thursday, 8 October 2015 08:25 (eight years ago) link

Not the Infinity Challenge festival contestant I was expecting, but still a cute (power) couple :D

EVol are officially disbanded, by the way :( Or at least, only Jucy and Say still have contracts with their Ent company. Topp Dogg lost Kidoh and Gohn too.

hurricane weather (forapper), Friday, 9 October 2015 01:49 (eight years ago) link

Speaking of Topp Dogg... their latest single seems like it's actually gonna be good???

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px3CFGGzFco

Not sure if their new company is gonna upload the whole thing or what - maybe they want to see if people will pay for it, for once - but a minute and a half is plenty long to judge.

Since I think we might be officially in Fall now, here's the playlist for mid-spring to summer songs mentioned in this thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrOVgqgTRSM&list=PLsh4Z5FNfPMBu72ls_QmVpbI3iZxni8oM

I didn't try to put it in chrono order like the last playlist, just organized a bit by sound. If I missed anything let me know.

i will prob scan this top to bottom at the end of the year and do my best to pull everything that's available then. I'm going to be wrong about a lot of titles.

Really interesting... is there capitalization in Hangul?

Recently when I think about the S. Korean national anthem, I think of the game on A Song For You where singers have to sing their own song while writing the lyrics to the National Anthem:

There's a "K-pop 90s Legends" concert happening in NYC on Halloween (Theater at Madison Square Garden): the performers are DJ DOC, COOL, R.ef, Chuli & Miae, Jo Sung Mo, CLON, Kim Won Joon, and JINUSEAN. Is this worth attending?

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 13:38 (eight years ago) link

Wow, Madison Sq. Garden? Even Big Bang only made Prudential Center (although it's about the same capacity at 18,000 and change). I wonder if they'll be able to sell out the seats.

If you like RUN-DMC and like, late-80s Jpop I'd say yes, because that's the sound... the lineup is missing Koyote but all of the groups (not sure about the solos) are strong live performers who have been active in the last few years... JINUSEAN and Chuli and Miae have a YG Entertainment connection (fans cross-pollinate), while DJ DOC, COOL, CLON, and Jo Sung Mo were subjects of a recent "remake" TV series with EXO who are like, a SUPER popular boyband, so the audience might include some teenagers too, not just 20s-30s Koreans.

(Obligatory Run to You.)

hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 22 October 2015 00:21 (eight years ago) link

No, it's not in the arena; it's in the theater, which is basically a small side room that only holds 5500 people.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Thursday, 22 October 2015 00:53 (eight years ago) link

OHH okay. In that case maybe I'll go... I feel I could actually talk about this one at work, unlike the idol group concepts LMAO.

hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 22 October 2015 01:13 (eight years ago) link

Plus it doesn't look like the show is gonna come within a mile of selling out (at those prices...), so you could probably buy the bleacher seats and finagle your way closer to the stage.

The lyrics to IU's new single one of the best hater takedowns in k-pop so far. Delicious kick to hypocrite nuts.

abcfsk, Thursday, 22 October 2015 21:14 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I really like it too, though it seems more like an effort at showing the "real" IU (who may not exist) than a takedown to me

hurricane weather (forapper), Monday, 26 October 2015 02:44 (eight years ago) link

the audience might include some teenagers too, not just 20s-30s Koreans

I was working with some quasi-hip Korean students earlier this year and '90s k-pop' had a similar cachet, insofar as i could tell, to '90s r&b'

that said the people i knew who'd go to 90s r&b nights they'd be in a godawful hipster club, not madison square (what's the uk equivalent to madison square? lol. earls court? no.)

Twice - "Ooh Ahh"

Getting serous "Bubble Pop" vibes from the song

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Monday, 26 October 2015 23:26 (eight years ago) link

It's soooooooo bad (TWICE, not f(x)). The chorus sounds vaguely like Shannon William's Why Why, but Why Why is charming and Williams can sing. All Ooh-Ah has going for it is a lot of production flash.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 00:06 (eight years ago) link

4Walls has a gorgeous chorus (I like it more than View), not sure about the bridge though.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link

Speaking of f(x), the MV seems a bit cheap compared to SHINee or EXO's recent romps through the woods, the album packaging is A+ as always though. Also, the other album tracks are WINNERS so far.

Papi >> Traveler >> When I'm Alone, Glitter, 4Walls > Deju Vu, Diamond, Rude Love, Cash Me Out

?

X up there with Traveler, maybe.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 00:55 (eight years ago) link

Whoops, I totally whiffed on that Shannon Williams song. Now that you mention it, that's all I can hear in the chorus.

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 12:40 (eight years ago) link

Yeah... I mean, it's not a super unique melody or anything, but personally I think Why Why is a better song, so Ooh Ahh loses in the comparison.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 23:39 (eight years ago) link

f(SHINee): https://youtu.be/v00N7Ythb8g

There's also a mashup going around, but it's not that good... waiting for a better one to share here.

Also, 4walls is still gorgeous but the bridge still breaks the mood... you can't just pop a Kpop bridge into a deep house song the way you could with another genre of music.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 23:59 (eight years ago) link

I still haven't listened to much from the new f(x) besides the single. I'm a little confused by the video, and your right it seems a little cheap. Did SM blow the budget on Red Velvet? Hot song, even if the bridge is kind of just floating around in a deep house song.

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 30 October 2015 16:04 (eight years ago) link

I don't think it's cheap as much as the f(x) aesthetics of the cover and promo art finally being carried over to the MV.
