Idk about the scando thing. There is a twin peaks-esque woodsy americana kitsch vibe to a lot of brunch spots in bushwick. Seems like a throwback to bush era "ironic appreciation" of mass culture but these places are new. Maybe its a vanguard that points to a coming resurgence of this aesthetic in the age of Trump.

Ppl like to get into distrusting metanarratives when their politics is openly an incoherent clown show. Disillusionment with Obama, as much as hope in Obama, was a coherent metanarrative, hence the 2k8-2k10 "bubble" when people had a hunger for authenticity. If politics isn't stupid, maybe culture isn't either, the logic goes. Maybe. All of this is very facile.

There was something about Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring, and Twitter that might have felt different to many people though -- a suspension of the corporate stranglehold on culture, a sense of the coming irrelevancy of all things mainstream

Hipster runoff warned us about her more than a decade ago.

Been reading the posts about her and yeah in retrospective she has always been unpalatable. I guess I tolerated it better when her music didn’t suck.

It's amazing she's been able to last this long despite being The Fucking Worst since day one. I mean, you would think "high school art girl version of Matthew Barney" would have a naturally short shelf life, but it's been a decade and a half or something at this point.

My timeline with Grimes is basically:

There was a really good one or maybe series of ones referencing edison lightbulb, mason jars, exposed brick sort of aesthetic trend in coffeehouses, "gastropubs" that was really satisfying. He was good at that stuff I think.
