I know the OG cast is sacrosanct (except not really if you've rewatched that stuff within the last 30 years) but, yeah, there have been a number of subsequent performers who were equally good if not better. Not saying Aykroyd is bad but McKinnon is at least his equal.

If we're talking about work done outside of SNL, there are plenty of talented people from old casts and newer casts alike who've done brilliant work (and also plenty who've been pitiful). If we're talking about work within the confines of SNL, though, there's Phil Hartman and then there's everyone else.

Kate McKinnon is great but, as I see her do more stuff, I see her getting Wiiged by the writing staff. It seems like they have less of an idea of what Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer's true schticks are and, as a result, they end up with a wider range of characters to portray (in fairness, Bryant does get pigeonholed a lot too but I feel like I've seen her do more surprising things than I've seen from McKinnon).

Re: range, I've said for years that Lorne needs to branch out and hire more performers with a theatrical background beyond the improv stage. But I guess that doesn't necessarily suit the current tone of the show, for better or worse.

As Hillary Clinton did on October 3, other political figures such as Steve Forbes, Rudy Guiliani and John McCain and have appeared in skits but not hosted the show. Former Vice President Al Gore appeared as a host in 2002.

Would even send SNL a check if they put Jorge Ramos in the audience and then had him stand up in the middle of Trump's monologue and ask serious questions. It would be one of the best TV moments of all time, though a backup guest would probably be wise.

It'd be nice to at least see some of the cast members pull a Nora Dunn wrt the Trump show.
