Yeah, for real. It's like she and fake Coop weren't even trying. Aykroyd's mustachioed Carter was a better impression.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

I liked kate mckinnon's hilary!

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 02:23 (eight years ago) link

SNL history buff Morbs remembers when cast members weren't decades younger than the politicians they played oh wait right that never happened

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 02:23 (eight years ago) link

Coop was horrible, and Chaffee yiiikes

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 02:34 (eight years ago) link

Leslie Jones would have been a more age-appropriate Hillary.

schwantz, Monday, 19 October 2015 03:01 (eight years ago) link

Aykroyd's mustachioed Carter was a better impression.

It was indeed, but when you don't have out-of-this-world talent, you have to get literal.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 05:28 (eight years ago) link

"out-of-this-world talent"

is that a UFO allusion and is it in reference to Aykroyd, Carter, or both?

it's not a tuomas (benbbag), Monday, 19 October 2015 05:44 (eight years ago) link

also when you have an old coot playing Sanders, you should go across the board.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 06:36 (eight years ago) link

Even accounting for the SNL myopia everyone suffers from, in what universe is Dan Aykroyd more of an out-of-this-world talent than Kate McKinnon?

circa1916, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:06 (eight years ago) link

I know the OG cast is sacrosanct (except not really if you've rewatched that stuff within the last 30 years) but, yeah, there have been a number of subsequent performers who were equally good if not better. Not saying Aykroyd is bad but McKinnon is at least his equal.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link

If we're talking about work done outside of SNL, there are plenty of talented people from old casts and newer casts alike who've done brilliant work (and also plenty who've been pitiful). If we're talking about work within the confines of SNL, though, there's Phil Hartman and then there's everyone else.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:28 (eight years ago) link

don't know Kate McKinnon's work, nor shall i

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:31 (eight years ago) link

I respect your position on this divisive issue.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:33 (eight years ago) link

McKinnon is skilled, but too many of her characters have the same manic traits. Maybe I am not watching close enough, but would like to see more range from her

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:34 (eight years ago) link

Kate McKinnon is great but, as I see her do more stuff, I see her getting Wiiged by the writing staff. It seems like they have less of an idea of what Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer's true schticks are and, as a result, they end up with a wider range of characters to portray (in fairness, Bryant does get pigeonholed a lot too but I feel like I've seen her do more surprising things than I've seen from McKinnon).

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:39 (eight years ago) link

Re: range, I've said for years that Lorne needs to branch out and hire more performers with a theatrical background beyond the improv stage. But I guess that doesn't necessarily suit the current tone of the show, for better or worse.

x-post upward

http://deadline.com/2015/10/donald-trump-saturday-night-live-protest-moveon-1201586581/

A coalition of Latino groups and liberal online activist platform MoveOn.org are calling for NBC to disinvite GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump from hosting Saturday Night Live on November 7, which happens to be exactly one year from Election Day 2016. MoveOn.org’s petition has climbed from 15,000 signatures Friday evening to 117,000 and counting as of Sunday evening.

...

Trump hosted SNL back in 2004, but his upcoming gig would mark the first time a Presidential candidate will host the show. As Hillary Clinton did on October 3, other political figures such as Steve Forbes, Rudy Guiliani and John McCain and have appeared in skits but not hosted the show. Former Vice President Al Gore appeared as a host in 2002.

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

Uh, McCain totally hosted. And let's not forget Giuliani.

Trump hosting is totally gross, as if it even needs to be said.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:45 (eight years ago) link

Wait, Forbes hosted, too. I'm not sure I understand the end of that quote.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link

I think they mean this is the first time someone has hosted the show while simultaneously running for President.

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 19 October 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link

controversy = ratings, Trump is going to host

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link

xpost I got that from the first sentence (and again: gross, Lorne), but the second seems to suggest that McCain and Giuliani and Forbes have only appeared in sketches a la Clinton's recent appearance. Which is incorrect.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

Having Trump host SNL is a total Trump move.

You mean like how Bill Murray has played himself in every movie since Meatballs, only demonstrating "range" by barely talking at all (Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers)?

he is not "himself" in Rushmore or Mad Dog and Glory, for starters

Would even send SNL a check if they put Jorge Ramos in the audience and then had him stand up in the middle of Trump's monologue and ask serious questions. It would be one of the best TV moments of all time, though a backup guest would probably be wise.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

It'd be nice to at least see some of the cast members pull a Nora Dunn wrt the Trump show.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 16:23 (eight years ago) link

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 05:23 (eight years ago) link

Toooootally. I wish they'd given David Duke a platform back when he was running for president. I guess it's never too late, Lorne!

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 10:29 (eight years ago) link

I wonder if native NYC-metro area people respond to Trump differently than most other Americans. I still identify Trump as a sort of 80's tabloid clown on par with Geraldo Rivera, Cutis Sliwa, George Steinbrenner etc. Clearly a dick but also an obviously pretend ideologue, posing no threat except in his own sphere, played for laffs.

The David Duke analogy wld work if maybe Ted Cruz or somebody was hosting.

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:28 (eight years ago) link

I viewed Trump in that way until he began his presidential campaign. Given that his new platform grants an air of legitimacy to the hateful views that he shares with a segment of the population, I definitely think he's dangerous.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:35 (eight years ago) link

those hateful views have been granted an air of legitimacy since plymouth rock
