Two songs in, I was ready to describe this as a less-bratty FIDLAR, but now I'm thinking more like Fucked Up with non-scary vocalist.

the vocalist is still my fave thing about them, killer voice
looks like we're supposed to get a "U2-esque" (?!) Modern Baseball album around January to kick off next year's thread 2014-style. should be seeing them w/ Pup and Jeff Rosenstock in Dec. and will report back.

oh man i love it when emo bands try to be u2, they usually do it better

totally, it's just that I have a hard time imagining dude's vocal style on anything more expansive than what they already do
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 01:43 (eight years ago) link
speaking of the expansive end of emo, enjoying the Foxing record reviewed on the 'Fork today
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 14:55 (eight years ago) link
what i've heard of that record is great, need to dive into it still
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 6 November 2015 14:56 (eight years ago) link
honestly it sounds to me like the last Antlers record on slightly fewer downers, though I realize that's not a tempting description to most people
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link
also reminds me a lot of the last Pianos Become the Teeth, they have the same kind of overarching pallor and I was surprised they don't share a producer
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 15:14 (eight years ago) link
the foxing record is gorgeous and sad. "eiffel" in particular is stunning

Loving the new Beach Slang. They played here the other night and I think did like 3 jawbreaker covers (a couple just sort of improvised drunkenly) It was a ton of fun.
― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link
they were a jawbreaker cover band for fest
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link
Worriers opened for them. That's an album people should be talking about too. Dig it lots.

I like that Beach Slang record, but I think I like James Alex's public (including a 15-minute phoner I did w/ him) attitude/persona/whatever even more. For some, it may come off as corny, but he seems genuinely humbled by the attention to me. Just seems like an awesome dude, and it helps me like the record more, tbh.
― alpine static, Thursday, 12 November 2015 22:38 (eight years ago) link
Totally comes across that way when he performs live. Glad it doesn't come across affected. Corny punks are kinda endearing IMHO

As we move to the end of the year, I'd like to drop a quick note to encourage any readers / lurkers / ilxors to post their favorite emo haircuts from this year to the thread so that I can hoover them into the ongoing spotify playlist. Last chance for any accessible stragglers that may not already be in the lexicon.

have y'all heard of rolo tomassi? i saw them in the kerrang list and it turns out they are right up my alley in terms of being a crushing hardcore band a la converge with some unbelievably gentle, kinda emo moments

mind you the last Loma Prieta record was very "Converge meets emo" and didn't work for me at all so we'll see
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:43 (eight years ago) link
this also has a lot of post-rocky parts but i'm generally unbothered bc the parts that cook really fucking cook

huh the better off record is definitely better than being last on that list, no idea why i ordered it like that
considered putting the wonder years record on that list but it really is half garbage to me at this point
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:00 (eight years ago) link
i rate the beach slang, fall out boy + allison weiss. the fob is really a fantastic record and imo only suffers bc they've put out such high quality content as of late that it seems unremarkable. also like

Does FIDLAR fit into this categorization? Their new one and the Beach Slang are by my fave punky things from this year.
― Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 17 December 2015 02:08 (eight years ago) link
the Wonder Years album held up p well for me, esp w/ my slightly edited playlist.
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Thursday, 17 December 2015 03:29 (eight years ago) link
and despite my best efforts I was v bored with the TWIABPAIANLATD album. I would add that about half of the Turnover album was stellar. there was a killer EP in there.

Still can't believe that the FOB came out this year; seems years old by now. Some regional stuff - self-titleds from Carb On Carb (Flying Nun-ish indie group that've slowly transitioned into 90s emo/pop-punk; kinda Rainer Maria-ish ... half of the band is from Auckland's greatest group never to record a full-length album, Moron Says What) and Chinese Football (from 成都, v.much in a twinkle/American Football style).
― etc, Thursday, 17 December 2015 03:50 (eight years ago) link
I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (The Max Levine Ensemble, Title Fight, Chumped, Colleen Green) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.
