flopson, Monday, 9 November 2015 00:37 (eight years ago) link

there's no way that's what he means by woes, that sounds like some rapgenius shit lol

flopson, Monday, 9 November 2015 00:38 (eight years ago) link

some OVO guy sold the press on the idea: http://www.thefader.com/2015/02/13/what-does-drake-really-mean-when-he-talks-about-his-woe

some dude, Monday, 9 November 2015 00:53 (eight years ago) link

LOLZ at all you grandpas who think that Drake is still relevant to millennials. Listen pops...we have moved on to Silento.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 November 2015 15:17 (eight years ago) link

Lmao

I have to confess to not listening to much Drake (being more busy trying to find my teeth in the lake, or w/e), but I think this is a great song, and I also think it's really myopic and just a bad reading to see the lyrics as endorsing some kind of butthurt MRA POV about women. I mean, butthurt yes, but much more in a pathetic way that the song is self-aware about (although the speaker is not).

even the video, doing his lame little dances in his sad little room

When he says "ever since I left the city" I picture him moving out to some near suburban attached development to save money, living in a clean but kind of sparely decorated apartment, a lot of blank white walls.

i heard some really really good dancehall cover version of hotline bling on local radio last night, just caught the last 20 seconds or so, but i can't seem to find it online (it's pirate radio and they don't really keep playlists on their clunky website), there's an elephant man one but i don't think that was it

marcos, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link

dunno if this is it, but this is currently my favorite version

The Reverend, Sunday, 22 November 2015 03:27 (eight years ago) link

anyone know if it's possible to get hold of the actual instrumental track somehow?

niels, Monday, 23 November 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

Hehe

I enjoyed this article, most of the technical stuff is complete gibberish to me but somehow still a good read http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar12/articles/it-0312.htm

niels, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:22 (eight years ago) link

lol in that article - "In hip-hop, you must write your own raps. If someone else were to write them for you, you'd have no credibility whatsoever, and you'd be out of the window immediately"

just sayin, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:48 (eight years ago) link

good to know '40'

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Theory (benbbag), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 01:36 (eight years ago) link

rev that bella blair tune was great, thx, not the one i heard (now i do think it was maybe elephant man) but i dug it and had some good lines ("stiff like ply board")

marcos, Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:37 (eight years ago) link

anyways re: the original most annoying thing is that radio cuts off the coda whenever they play it, only one station in town plays the whole thing, the instrumental coda is one of the best parts

marcos, Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:39 (eight years ago) link

I feel like dude's vocal tics have got more obnoxious since "Worst Behavior"

As in idg how "runningthroughthrSIXwithmyWOES" is a meme/quotable whatever

Also "Metro Boomin on production WOW"

nova, Thursday, 17 December 2015 07:54 (eight years ago) link

I'm hearing a remix in my head where after each Drizzy "woes" a chorus of early-60s type girl singers chirp "oh NOES!"

this is...amazing?

k3vin k., Thursday, 14 January 2016 17:40 (eight years ago) link

it is amazing that my hatred of "Hotline Bling" covers and my hatred of viral Jimmy Fallon musical bits got together and had a baby

some dude, Thursday, 14 January 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link

haw

k3vin k., Thursday, 14 January 2016 19:31 (eight years ago) link

i mean i know that we all view askance rock covers of rap/r&b songs but to me this doesn't come with the usual baggage, he just goes for it. and i'm not really a fan of the original either but he and the band really pull it off imo, it's just really tight

k3vin k., Thursday, 14 January 2016 19:35 (eight years ago) link

i'm aware this makes me a normie dad

k3vin k., Thursday, 14 January 2016 19:37 (eight years ago) link

yeah this is fantastic - love that he picked the ROlling Thunder look

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 January 2016 10:42 (eight years ago) link

but kinda weird too right since it's a positively 4th street parody?

niels, Friday, 15 January 2016 12:04 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it's a blonde on blonde sound/delivery with a rolling thunder look !

getting bored of aggro drake

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 January 2016 00:26 (eight years ago) link

'real friends' is better than drake's new song

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 31 January 2016 00:27 (eight years ago) link

don't really care which is better cuz i don't see myself choosing to listen to either but drake has seemed to hone in on a pretty repetitive sound whereas kanye's new stuff can at least surprise

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 January 2016 00:36 (eight years ago) link

ty dolla is better than drake but drake's new song is better than real friends
this is a different aggro drake btw. He has finally absorbed the loose future flow, obv the endgame of wattba

one month passes...

a Toronto rapper has been playing snippets of unreleased Drake songs he's threatening to leak, and one of them features Drake singing Nico's "These Days," it's pretty horrible
