― pplains, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 14:47 (eight years ago) link
Is this a thread for American cities or anywhere? I'm a UKer but don't want to ruin the party with a curveball like Bradford or somewhere.
― ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 16:58 (eight years ago) link
I'm down with worldwide, though if there's going to be real toughies in the mix I think it's okay to have more than just one going at a time. Might try and gather a few myself...
― Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:01 (eight years ago) link
yeah worldwide is good, go for it
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:21 (eight years ago) link
worldwide
― saer, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:36 (eight years ago) link
I will never get any non-obvious ones or places I haven't lived but will love following along with this.
― ryan, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:42 (eight years ago) link
Cool tho I'm in work all night so if someone wants to jump the queue then go ahead.

i'm starting with the UK for this one based on the haphazard road layout and football stadium
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link
barnsley?
― ogmor, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 19:58 (eight years ago) link
let me know how wrong i am at least
my first guess was sheffield which doesn't seem to be correct
i don't know mid-size UK cities very well at all, which is what this appears to be to me
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link
Barnsley isnt a bad guess
― saer, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link
Stockport?
― Neil S, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link
Not so good...missing the viaduct!
― saer, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:33 (eight years ago) link
hah yeah, was looking at the position of the stadium relative to the train line...
― Neil S, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:35 (eight years ago) link
I had a look on google maps and found it p quick but I will hold off if anyone wants to guess. stockport much less green, and has a giant blue glass pyramid ofc
― ogmor, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:55 (eight years ago) link
i found it as well, not so quick though, went through like 30 other towns first
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 21:38 (eight years ago) link
Just out of work - 3. Halifax?
― ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 19 November 2015 00:23 (eight years ago) link
The West Yorkshire one obv.
― ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 19 November 2015 00:24 (eight years ago) link
Reckon that's right, that football stadium in the south east is the shay
― Karl Rove Knausgård (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 19 November 2015 00:33 (eight years ago) link
That's definitely it.
― pplains, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:20 (eight years ago) link
I'll post one when I figure out how to use bing maps to get an aerial pic on my phone.
― ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 19 November 2015 09:23 (eight years ago) link
3 is Halifax, well done!
― saer, Thursday, 19 November 2015 10:08 (eight years ago) link
Hats off to anyone who gets these, this is insanely hard. Reckon I could get London or New York if anyone fancies doing those.

i'm sticking on that big open landscape in the middle. can't read it. cemetery? farms? big axial baroque garden?
― Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 19 November 2015 19:55 (eight years ago) link
I guessed cemetery.
― nickn, Thursday, 19 November 2015 21:16 (eight years ago) link

Saer nailed it.
― pplains, Friday, 20 November 2015 01:09 (eight years ago) link
Is that a cemetery in the Jo-burg?
― nickn, Friday, 20 November 2015 03:13 (eight years ago) link
Look more closely in another tab. Each of those is a city block.
― Humean froth (Sanpaku), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:07 (eight years ago) link
New Delhi?
― El Tomboto, Friday, 20 November 2015 04:24 (eight years ago) link
I did look full size, Cairo seemed like a really big city in a dry climate that may have relativly low-tech development.
x-post, OK maybe India too.
― nickn, Friday, 20 November 2015 04:27 (eight years ago) link
The "carpet" quality makes me think Tokyo, the extremely gridding not so much. It's not Curitiba. Hrm. New Delhi outside of the center is actually pretty close in 'look' but I'm stumped. Man, that scale is wild. Feeling really dumb that I don't know what this is.
― Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:35 (eight years ago) link
What's weird is how even it is - maybe because we're zoomed out so far but it's hard to read major/minor streets, or even a long/short kind of rhythm like Manhattan or Mexico City have in their grids. It's weird to see something that screams "20th century planning" but not "and also they were obsessed with traffic circulation" which would lead you to arterials or at least some primary collector roads or something.
― Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:38 (eight years ago) link
It's New Delhi. I first saw the image in a coffee-table book about overpopulation.
― Humean froth (Sanpaku), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:50 (eight years ago) link
I tried searching that area of New Delhi on google maps, but couldn't find the right airport.

I was in the Shay Stadium a couple of weeks ago and I still had no idea that one up thread was Halifax. These are difficult.

― ciderpress, Thursday, 5 March 2020 16:24 (four years ago) link
would prefer to leave it hanging with no hints though than be told the answer
― ciderpress, Thursday, 5 March 2020 16:27 (four years ago) link
Haha yea, I keep thinking Annapolis, Portsmouth NH, or around the Chesapeake area but no dice so far!
― cherry blossom, Thursday, 5 March 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link
There's kind of a naval academy feel about it!
― cherry blossom, Thursday, 5 March 2020 16:39 (four years ago) link

I went on a boat tour of Portsmouth Harbour years ago. The only other people on the boat were my parents and about 20 German tourists who for some reason were all wearing light blue t-shirts with 'SHIT HAPPENS' printed on them. It was surreal.
― Being cheap is expensive (snoball), Thursday, 5 March 2020 17:01 (four years ago) link
I saw it was Portsmouth but I cheated.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 5 March 2020 18:31 (four years ago) link
Last one is Newport Beach, CA!

^^^^
― omar little, Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link
Interesting, I found that much harder than Portsmouth! I wasn't even really thinking of California (and I don't know Newport Beach at all)
― cherry blossom, Friday, 6 March 2020 07:43 (four years ago) link
Interesting looking one!

― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 7 March 2020 19:59 (four years ago) link
klaipeda, lithuania. the euro buildings and barrier islands had me scanning through the coasts of the north and baltic seas for a while.
― circles, Sunday, 8 March 2020 02:35 (four years ago) link
Yes! I thought this would have been an easier one than it proved to be, with such a distinctive coastline!
