There's some really sick shit going around about how this was "payback" for them playing in Tel Aviv...

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 18:52 (eight years ago) link

They and their fans were just (hugely, tragically) unfortunate enough to have been at the Bataclan on the same night as the France-Germany match, which surely was the decider timing-wise. I doubt ISIS had much of an opinion on the Eagles of Death Metal per se.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

Make sure to read the comments, in which conservative Christian nutbag Rod Dreher explains that while the Eagles of Death Metal's song "Kiss the Devil" may well have inspired the terrorists to attack, the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" is A-OK, 'cause it's based on litrachoor (plus, the Stones are awesome).

That's a lot of speculative bullshit.

I sure as hell hope Jesse will return to music. This year had been such a triumphant rewritten
for them after what seems like a lot of hatdship. I can't even imagine the psychological ramifications of bring a part of all that. Like, just dealing with the pain and grieving. Fuck. But I hope they find it in them to play again someday.

Losing a member of your crew to senseless violence for no reason other than that he happened to be selling t-shirts in the wrong place at the wrong time is one thing; witnessing 89 of your fans randomly mowed down by thoughtless madmen in front of you while playing what would have been just another gig on your European tour itinerary is quite another.

I'm not sure how much they "witnessed" - the reports I read suggested they escaped through the back of the building almost as soon as the heard the gunshots, and even before then they weren't able to actually see much because of the stage lights. Although even if they saw nothing it's still an almost incomphehensibly trumatic event.

wonder what i would have thought if i'd read this sentence one year ago

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 23:03 (eight years ago) link

I didn't find the article that terrible; likely the editor demanded it. Did a double-take at "being laden"... don't know Rayner's work well enough to know how closely he writes.

If I had to put money on it: they'll stop touring on their own for a while but get support on the festival circuit.

Adam J Duncan, Thursday, 19 November 2015 03:40 (eight years ago) link

A simple thinkpiece on how awful and difficult it must be for the band, but as soon as you bring in "and of course they can never play again and shame on them if you do" takes it straight through "thanks, desk jockey, how do you know so much about performing?" territory into the land of solipsistic my fear = your morality bullshit..

Three Word Username, Thursday, 19 November 2015 08:46 (eight years ago) link

yeah, i read the article on the guardian website a while after it was posted.

thread BTL was full of deleted comments and closed within a very short space of time !

the thread on the bands facebook page had comments from people who were amongst the chaos, and makes for heavy reading.

Jesus Christ. people getting found hiding in the dressing room and slaughtered.

we played Brussels night before last under a level 3 terror threat and as we were leaving town they upped it to 4. During our show, there were one or two soldiers with machine guns strolling through the building, but when we came back in the morning to get our gear, the whole place had been handed over to soldiers: they were the ones who let us in to get our stuff. the venue then cancelled the next week of shows. there were soldiers on every corner on the way out of town.

Not much to say, but it is well worth watching. And very, very hard to watch.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, definitely - very difficult. Made me realize it must be so hard for anyone there to speak publicly about it given the shock and trauma they might be experiencing.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 November 2015 16:15 (eight years ago) link

exactly.
i started watching this at work today, and had to call it quits as i work in an open plan office and within a few minutes i was in bits.
not sure i could face a camera crew/interviewer this soon had i experienced such a situation.
jesse looks totally fucked up, and appears to be struggling with the emotional fallout.
hope they get to fulfil their wish re being the first band to play at the bataclan if/when it reopens.

Yeah, a good statement. I'm apprehensive though about what Jesse will have to say if he ever really opens up about this in an interview.

The article has been updated to include his apologies by the way

i don't blame him... makes sense given his experience & headspace rn...

this guy keeps making himself less and less sympathetic

Hey (Extended Mix), Sunday, 13 March 2016 04:50 (eight years ago) link

nah c'mon now, I don't share the man's politics, but if some hundreds of people came out to see me play a show, and 80 odd of them were gunned down by maniacs AT THE SHOW? MID SET? i can't even imagine reacting to that. certainly would never pick up a guitar again, and this guy came back to town to finish the show weeks later. if anybody gets a pass to say wild shit on fox news it is this guy

sheesh, Sunday, 13 March 2016 06:53 (eight years ago) link

okay, but don't bands usually have publicists or minders who could tell him to not say that kind of wild shit for a while?

StanM, Sunday, 13 March 2016 07:46 (eight years ago) link

The guy contributed to conspiracy theory nonsense. I got into a brief discussion with someone who swears that six security guards called out because they knew it was coming.

I am sorry he went through what he did, but contributing to the delusional fiction of conspiracy theorists is not something I forgive very easily.

There are people who seriously believe things like he said and they use his words as "evidence" for that belief.

I'm not trying to grit on a dude who's been through an utterly horrific experience. Just that, as a fan of the band, I was worried that something like this would be coming.

two months pass...

Reads to me like Jesse is not dealing well with this at all, no matter what he claims, and is in retreating even further into the far-right nutcase/paranoia bullshit he was already suffering from. The piece of shit, as always, is McInnes. I feel bad for the club's employees and owners, and for the other bandmembers who are, for a second time, going to have to clean up after Jesse. Awful situation when someone is losing their mind in public.

jaywbabcock, Sunday, 15 May 2016 02:18 (eight years ago) link

Why not take him at his word about what he saw? Nothing that outlandish said there.

flappy bird, Sunday, 15 May 2016 03:09 (eight years ago) link

When the police or whoever is doing the investigating corroborate what he's saying about 'inside job' and so forth, I will take Jesse at whatever his current word is (since it changes, as we've seen). But until then, this account is, for me, something like trauma-induced motivated reasoning.

jaywbabcock, Sunday, 15 May 2016 03:24 (eight years ago) link

Nothing that outlandish said there.

lute bro (brimstead), Sunday, 15 May 2016 05:27 (eight years ago) link

A day after, at the stadium, Muslims booed the moment of silence and we barely heard about it in the press. I saw Muslims celebrating in the street during the attack. I saw it with my own eyes. In real time! How did they know what was going on? There must have been coordination.

nakhchivan, Sunday, 15 May 2016 13:19 (eight years ago) link

You never see bad guys in movies who are Arab terrorists. It’s always Germans or French…

Or conservative Christian rednecks. They’re apparently what’s wrong with everything in the world now, including global warming. What about the other ice age we went through? There were no Christian Republicans back then. What caused that meltdown?

The other problem with that is, when you get rid of these Christian rednecks, you create a vacuum and it gets filled with people way worse. It gets filled with Islam. You end up replacing evangelism with sharia law.

Politicians behave better when they know people are watching. We behave better when we believe Jesus is watching us.

These atheists tell us we don’t need religion, yet everyone seems to be creating flimsy substitutes to replace it. Rehab is just Lent. Meditation is just Latin Mass. Seeing a therapist is just talking to your priest.

And the thing about the Bible is it’s written down. A therapist can change his diagnosis just like that and there’s no way of calling him out on it.

nakhchivan, Sunday, 15 May 2016 13:42 (eight years ago) link

flappy bird – in all honesty, and though one wouldn't wish to cast aspersions, it probably ought to be noted that you have overlooked several outlandish claims in that extract alone

I think flappy was referring specifically to hughes' experience the day of the attack, not his/taki's horrifying (outlandish even) opinions about the attack
